CIRP-E integrates strategic fleet sizing, tactical route design, lot sizing and speed selection, together with operational vehicle scheduling. We derive analytical results for vehicle speed and cycle times, and study how they affect fleet sizing and vehicle scheduling. These results and insights are then exploited to develop heuristics which are embedded in a powerful two-phase metaheuristic solution approach for CIRP-E. The first phase designs vehicle routes and decides on vehicle speed and cycle times to minimize the total cost rate. The second phase takes the designed routes as input and decides on fleet sizing and scheduling of deliveries, while adjusting vehicle speeds and cycle times. Computational experiments show that the proposed solution approach adequately trades-off the various cost components and outperforms different adaptations of a state-of-the-art solution method for the classical cyclic inventory routing problem.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":14287,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Production Economics","volume":"287 ","pages":"Article 109652"},"PeriodicalIF":9.8,"publicationDate":"2025-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144084472","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The movement of these containers relies on Material Handling Resources (MHRs) with heterogeneous capacities. Stemming from a real-life scenario encountered in a manufacturing plant, this research represents a pioneering effort in exploring the integration of inbound and inplant logistics and thus highlights the operational intricacies of assigning docks and scheduling inbound trucks, along with the allocation and scheduling of unloaded containers via MHRs simultaneously. A mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model for integrated inbound and inplant logistics is proposed to optimize the makespan for container transport from dock to marketplace. Consequently, the developed model ensures comprehensive tracking of container movement from the dock to their respective marketplaces and other characteristics not addressed before in literature. A comparative analysis between the integrated and sequential approaches is conducted to underscore the advantages of the new approach, which demonstrates that a sequential approach yields suboptimal outcomes. Additionally, an innovative technique, namely Divide-Fix, Fix-Optimize, and Overarching Generate-Optimize, is introduced. This method leverages heuristics, MILP and three adapted metaheuristics—Population-based Multi-start Simulated Annealing, Hybrid Harris Hawks Optimization, and Opposition-based Whale Optimization Algorithm—to address large-scale instances. Notably, the technique yields good solutions with an optimality gap within 3 % and exhibits a narrow confidence interval, indicating consistent and stable outcomes.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":14287,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Production Economics","volume":"288 ","pages":"Article 109651"},"PeriodicalIF":9.8,"publicationDate":"2025-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144491862","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite extensive research, traditional methods often prove inadequate for handling the dual cost-risk minimization, particularly when confronted with dynamic changes. This research aims to fill this gap by proposing a novel solution that simultaneously tackles the dual objectives with order allocation under time-varying demand. The uniqueness of our approach lies in the application of the FP-Growth association-rules algorithm to uncover latent risk patterns based on criteria interdependency. We hybridize this technique with a new proposed variant of the Weighted Sum Method (WSM), offering a risk-aware decision-making model. A numerical application based on real-world case study from the automotive industry is proposed to demonstrate the applicability. Furthermore, to adapt to data availability constraints, we proposed a data augmentation algorithm using the Joint and Conditional Probability Distributions (JCPD) method. This technique generates volumetric synthetic data while preserving interdependencies between attributes (criteria), enabling realistic validation. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed solution across various scenarios, highlighting its superiority. This research provides twofold theoretical and managerial implications. First, it introduces a theoretical understanding of a bottom-up risk-pattern discovery approach for real-time risk modelling in an AI-driven model. Second, it introduces a practical AI-driven stepwise approach for purchasers that enhances cost efficiency, resilience, and proactive risk mitigation in the emerging risk-prone markets. Despite the promising results, we acknowledge the limitations of our study and suggest future research directions.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":14287,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Production Economics","volume":"288 ","pages":"Article 109672"},"PeriodicalIF":9.8,"publicationDate":"2025-05-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144522445","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nevertheless, the extent to which blockchain adoption influences firm resilience and its broader spectrum of stakeholders remains uncertain. Our study investigates how a focal firm's adoption of blockchain in the supply chain affects its resilience, encompassing both financial stability and operational flexibility. We then explore the spillover effects of the focal firm's use of blockchain on the resilience of both suppliers and customers, and further examine the moderating effects of supply chain diversification. Drawing on data from Chinese listed manufacturers and their supply chain partners, the empirical results reveal that blockchain significantly improves the financial stability of focal firms while its relationship with operational flexibility follows an inverted U-shaped pattern. In terms of supply chain spillover effects, the blockchain adoption of focal firms is linked to decreased financial stability for customers, but it concurrently boosts the operational flexibility of suppliers and customers. Supply chain diversification moderates the relationship between blockchain adoption and the operational flexibility of both suppliers and customers. These insights illuminate the trade-offs introduced by blockchain for supply chain resilience, providing a nuanced understanding of how supply chain members are influenced by the focal firm's blockchain adoption.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":14287,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Production Economics","volume":"286 ","pages":"Article 109671"},"PeriodicalIF":9.8,"publicationDate":"2025-05-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143947467","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aims to design a fair (win–win) contract farming model for a dual-channel (fresh and processed) blueberry supply chain, incorporating an incentive mechanism to ensure that all parties benefit. We examine the benefits of incentive-based contracts over penalty-based contracts by analytically investigating three farming situations: (1) no contract, (2) penalty-based contract farming, and (3) incentive-based contract farming. We establish analytical conditions for collaborative incentive-based contract terms that benefit both parties and validate these conditions numerically using data from a representative blueberry farm. Our findings indicate that the incentive-based contract farming leads to mutually beneficial outcomes and higher supply chain profits compared to the penalty-based contract. We conduct numerical and comprehensive sensitivity analyses to assess the impact of contract farming on the profits of the farmer, agribusiness firm, and the overall supply chain. Our study has significant theoretical and practical implications, emphasizing the importance of balanced and mutually beneficial contract farming arrangements that account for yield, price, and quality uncertainties within a dual-channel supply chain.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":14287,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Production Economics","volume":"286 ","pages":"Article 109635"},"PeriodicalIF":9.8,"publicationDate":"2025-05-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144072487","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They not only produce hardware products but also develop platform ecosystems that connect hardware product users and software developers. However, the existing literature rarely explores how the establishment of platform ecosystems affects the manufacturer’s optimal selling model choice. We consider a monopolistic manufacturer that establishes a platform ecosystem, generating revenue from both hardware sales and software developer access fees (service price). Furthermore, the manufacturer can choose the direct selling, reselling, and agency selling to distribute the hardware products. We primarily examine the impacts of establishing a platform ecosystem on hardware product pricing, profitability, and supply chain efficiency in different selling models. Our theoretical analysis first reveals that establishing a platform ecosystem, driven by cross-side network effects, can contribute to the reduction of hardware product prices. This incentive to lower prices is strongest under the agency selling, followed by the direct selling, and then the reselling. Second, compared with the scenario without a platform ecosystem, establishing a platform ecosystem will expand the manufacturer’s preference for agency selling over reselling. Third, the platform ecosystem can improve supply chain efficiency in reselling under a certain condition. However, agency selling consistently decreases in efficiency. Furthermore, contrary to traditional wisdom, when the commission rate is high and the cross-side network effect is low, supply chain efficiency under reselling surpasses that under agency selling. Last, we extended the model and reveal that consumers’ privacy concerns and the negative reverse network effect expand the region where agency selling dominates, while nonzero costs (production and service costs) and channel competition reduce this region.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":14287,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Production Economics","volume":"286 ","pages":"Article 109638"},"PeriodicalIF":9.8,"publicationDate":"2025-05-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144084518","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study presents a parameterized system dynamics model to predict the Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI), incorporating both linear and nonlinear interrelationships among transport supply, demand, market sentiment, and freight rates. The model comprises four integrated components: (1) a transport demand estimator based on past container shipping volumes, Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and the Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI); (2) an actual containership capacity model that considers shipping liners’ strategic and tactical capacity decisions such as blank sailings, slow steaming, round voyage duration and idle fleet capacity, along with fleet variables such as ship delivery and scrapping; (3) a novel Market Sentiment Index (MSI) using lexicon-based text mining of news articles, integrated with PMI to quantify market sentiment; and (4) an SCFI prediction model that captures the bidirectional feedback between these components. Results indicate that our system dynamics model outperforms established methods such as XGBoost and ARIMA. Furthermore, we find that freight rates are sensitive to the balance between supply, demand, and market sentiment. Specifically, an oversupply of capacity and declining demand reduce freight rates, whereas capacity constraints caused by supply chain disruptions increase rates. Sensitivity analysis further demonstrates that strategic capacity adjustments, particularly through blank (cancelled) sailings, can effectively increase freight rates. These insights have important implications for strategic, tactical, and operational decision-making within global supply chains.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":14287,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Production Economics","volume":"286 ","pages":"Article 109669"},"PeriodicalIF":9.8,"publicationDate":"2025-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144070084","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Their products need the same key components (e.g., Dell and ASUS both use Intel Core processor for their laptops) but eventually have differentiated performances because the competitive CM usually have inferior product design capability. One natural question is whether it is beneficial to pool their component purchase orders for cost saving and if so, whether the component supplier's incentive to improve quality will be discouraged. We build a co-opetitive three-layer supply chain model by formulating the trade-offs among the component supplier's quality investment, the brand and the competitive CM's manufacturing cooperation, and their product competition in the downstream market. We find that when the CM's design capability disadvantage is either limited or significant, leading to intensified or mild product competition, component quality investment will be encouraged, but the joint procurement between the brand and the competitive CM will be discouraged. Recognizing the brand's advantageous demand potential, the supplier will strategically adjust the CM's wholesale price upward, whereas the brand's downward without the joint procurement of the brand and the competitive CM. Our study extends prior research on joint procurement by demonstrating how upstream suppliers can leverage both quality investment and wholesale pricing strategies to avoid potential profit loss from buyer procurement alliances.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":14287,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Production Economics","volume":"286 ","pages":"Article 109666"},"PeriodicalIF":9.8,"publicationDate":"2025-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144138374","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In turn, customers’ willingness to purchase online is shaped by the responsiveness level offered, impacting overall sales revenue. To address this business context, we introduce a responsive omnichannel distribution network design problem under a probabilistic, offer-dependent customer channel choice framework. At the strategic level, our approach optimizes the selection of delivery service offers by demand zone while jointly determining the number and location of UFCs and omnistores. We formulate a two-stage stochastic distribution network design model that maximizes expected profit. Demand scenarios are derived from a discrete choice model that captures customer preferences between online and offline channels, contingent on the retailer’s responsiveness level. To account for last-mile delivery complexities, we employ a refined pixelization of urban delivery areas and develop a precise calculation of Order-to-Delivery Time (ODT). Managerial insights from a case study of an omnichannel retailer in France highlight the advantages of deploying UFCs and omnistores, yielding up to an 8% profit increase under high responsiveness. Our results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model in capturing customer willingness to buy online, with network offerings shifting to next-day delivery in up to 60% of demand zones.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":14287,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Production Economics","volume":"286 ","pages":"Article 109636"},"PeriodicalIF":9.8,"publicationDate":"2025-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143931943","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
