At low x, only the electron spin resonance (ESR) of diluted Fe<sup>3+</sup> ions is present. The regions of formation K<sub>3</sub>Y(PO<sub>4</sub>)<sub>2</sub>, YPO<sub>4</sub>, KCaY(PO<sub>4</sub>)<sub>2</sub> and K<sub>2</sub>CaP<sub>2</sub>O<sub>7</sub> from high-temperature solutions of K-Ca-Y-P-Mo-O have been distinguished. The short distance compensation of the Eu<sup>3+</sup> in the Ca<sub>2</sub>+ sites in β-Ca<sub>2</sub>SiO<sub>4</sub>:Eu<sup>2+</sup>/Eu<sup>3+</sup> and the long distance compensation of Eu<sup>3+</sup> in the Mg<sup>2+</sup> or other sites in LiMgPO<sub>4</sub>:Eu<sup>2+</sup>/Eu<sup>3+</sup> is responsible for different temperature behaviour of the luminescence in both materials. It has been found that utilization of submicron powders can significantly reduce YAG formation temperature from 1700°C for coarse powder to 1200-1500°C for fine powders. Moreover, utilization of different-sized yttria and alumina particles provide a competitive advantage of shrinkage over expansion processes by changing the kinetics of YAG phase formation. Nd3+:YAG (1-4 at.%) laser ceramics with in-line optical transmission of about 81.5 % at λ=1064 nm has been produced by reactive sintering. Some of these multicenters are associated with antisite defects, i.e. rare-earth ions substituting smaller cations in different crystallographic positions. The antisite defects have detrimental effect on the scintillation properties of these materials.
