Mitigation of depression associated adverse outcomes is mostly reliant upon timely diagnosis and decisive intervention. Antidepressants and adjunct drugs constitute the pharmacological modalities for the therapy of depression, in addition to supportive non-pharmacological methods of management. This prospective cross-sectional observational study aims at analyzing the utilization of antidepressants in American Psychiatric Association (APA) categories of depression in a remote North-East Indian teaching hospital. Methods: Patients clinically diagnosed with depression based on Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) and prescribed with antidepressant medication, were included in the study. The data were analyzed based on demographic characteristics, prescribed antidepressant medication and co-prescribed adjunct drugs. Results: A total of 316 patients were included in the study. The SSRI class of antidepressants were prescribed most frequently (89%) followed by TCAs (6%) & SNRIs (4.4%). Escitalopram was the single most frequently prescribed antidepressant (51%) followed by sertraline (23%) & fluoxetine (11.4%). The SSRIs were used most frequently in bipolar disorder (94.7%), followed by depressive episode (89.2%) & mixed anxiety depressive disorder (88.2%). The utilization of SSRIs was more frequent in the ≤ 50 age group (90.3%) and in males (92.5%). Sedatives including benzodiazepines, were used in 78.8% and atypical antipsychotics in 8.9% of the patients. Conclusion: SSRIs are the most frequently used antidepressant class across all categories of depression. Benzodiazepines have been extensively co-prescribed. The pharmacotherapy of depression in this hospital conforms to currently available clinical evidence and treatment guidelines.","PeriodicalId":14233,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Nutrition, Pharmacology, Neurological Diseases","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135851604","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

She was challenged in terms of reduced mobility and had sought several treatment options to control her PD symptoms without successful outcome. After examination and confirmation of diagnosis, the decision was taken to design a precision nutritional intervention using a gut microbiome-based diet combined with medical treatment. After 2 months of a superfood dietary intervention, the patient showed signs of clinical improvement as evidenced by improved mobility and a change in the Hoehn and Yahr clinical severity scale from stages 3 to 2. In conclusion, it is possible to modulate the gut microbiome to reverse the established gut dysbiosis associated with the neurodegenerative process in PD, which can lead to clinical benefit by reducing functional disability.","PeriodicalId":14233,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Nutrition, Pharmacology, Neurological Diseases","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135851822","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A disparity in the stable state of the cytokine regulatory axis and a cytokine storm are observed to occur from the binding of the ACE2 to the COVID, and the subsequent functional alterations in the ACE2/AT2R suggest that COVID-19 may use direct or indirect processes to produce neurological symptoms. Increased cases of Bell palsy were reported during the CoV pandemic, so our study aimed to estimate the incidence rate of Bell palsy among COVID-19 patients in South Bangalore, India. Secondary data of patients with Bell palsy were obtained retrospectively from two multispecialty Hospitals in South Bangalore. COVID positive populations were collected between the period of March 2021 and February 2022, and many Bell palsy cases within 3 months of post-Covid period were included. Confirmatory calls were made for patients with Covid Positive who were not diagnosed to discover the occurrence of Bell palsy. A retrospective analysis of Bell palsy cases found 11 incidences between March 2021 and February 2022, when there were 1577 COVID patients in total. According to descriptive statistical analysis, the prevalence of Bell palsy increased by 0.7% during the COVID-19 pandemic. Bell palsy could be considered one of the neurological complications among COVID-19 patients, and appropriate preventative measures should be taken.","PeriodicalId":14233,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Nutrition, Pharmacology, Neurological Diseases","volume":"17 1","pages":"117 - 122"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78797854","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It needs to be differentiated from imbalance or disequilibrium, which usually has a central or cervicogenic etiology, and also from other vertigo mimics like presyncope or seizure disorder. Vertigo/dizziness is a symptom whose etiology can be multifactorial with various clinical overlaps among different vertigo syndromes due to multiple levels of involvement in the vestibular pathway. Hence, an otolaryngologist faces a great challenge in finding the etiology. Localization of the exact site of vertigo can be challenging for many specialists. Meniere disease, migraine, or benign paroxysmal positioning vertigo are the most common causes of recurrent vertigo. Posterior circulation ischemia or stroke can also cause vertigo or imbalance. This review discusses the role of thorough history, and clinical examination, which includes Dix-Hallpike test, other vestibular and auditory function tests and audiograms, imaging comprising of MRI of brain and spine, and high-resolution computed tomography scan of temporal bone. The current review also describes cervicogenic vertigo, which is treated and studied mainly by physiotherapists, with lack of clarity of this entity among otolaryngologists and other specialists. The multidisciplinary approach for vertigo entails active participation of a team comprising of otolaryngologists, physiotherapists, general physicians, neurologists, orthopedician, and neurosurgeons, based on clinical features and investigations, is described in the review.","PeriodicalId":14233,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Nutrition, Pharmacology, Neurological Diseases","volume":"15 1","pages":"81 - 88"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81782616","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aimed to asses the biochemical impact of PSE on heated palm olein-induced oxidative stress in rat liver tissue as an experimental model. The palm olein was repeatedly heated at 180 ± 1 °C for 25 hours (5 days’ step heating) and then used for rat feeding. The oil properties before and after heating were analyzed by measuring peroxide value (PV), acid value (AV), and total polar compounds (TPC). Forty-eight adult male Fischer 344 rats were divided into four equal groups (n = 12); first group: rats were fed non-heated palm olein (NHPO) diet, second group: rats were fed the same diet as the first group with PSE, third group: rats were fed heated palm olein (HPO) diet, and fourth group: rats were fed the same diet as the third group with PSE. The rats were given PSE by oral gavage (0.1 mg extract/1 mL water/day) for 8 weeks before being sacrificed. Hepatic histopathological changes and biochemical measurements of total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and glutathione (GSH) in liver tissue homogenates were assessed. There was a significant increase in PV, AV, and TPC for HPO as compared to NHPO, P < 0.05. The HPO diet caused oxidative stress in the rat liver, as evidenced by decreasing TAC levels and depletion of GSH. Besides, HPO fed group showed fatty infiltration of the hepatocytes as shown by histopathological analysis, in contrast to the NHPO group that exhibited normal structure and architectures of the hepatic cells. In addition, an improvement was observed in serum biochemical parameters (aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase), indicating a protective effect of PSE against HPO-induced liver injuries, confirmed by histopathological studies. In conclusion, PSE supplementation showed a protective effect in HPO fed groups by improving GSH and TAC levels significantly. PSE combats oxidative stress induced by the HPO diet in hepatocytes of experimental rats.","PeriodicalId":14233,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Nutrition, Pharmacology, Neurological Diseases","volume":"114 1","pages":"96 - 103"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72590364","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Amla pieces were soaked in brine containing fenugreek powder, cumin seed powder, and fresh ginger extracts for OD process. Then, amla samples were FD at −50 °C for 13 h under 10−3 mbar pressure and TD at 50 °C ± 3 °C for 13 h. Multiple regression models were developed for biochemical and microbial parameters of amla. FD and TD samples were packed in 0.05 mm thickness low-density polyethylene pouches and stored at 35 °C ± 3 °C temperature for 60 days. The moisture content of the sample increases slightly with higher regression coefficient for FD (0.046) sample than TD (0.038) sample. The regression models established positive correlation with acidity of TD and FD samples with coefficient 0.004 and 0.005, respectively. It also indicated that 0.002 increase in pH reduces the shelf life of the products. Ascorbic acid and tannin content of the dried samples followed negative nonlinear trend. The paired t test showed no significant difference (p ≤ 0.05) between TD and FD amla pieces during the study period.","PeriodicalId":14233,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Nutrition, Pharmacology, Neurological Diseases","volume":"14 1","pages":"104 - 112"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72900728","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, the present study aimed to assess dietitians’ and nutritionists’ knowledge of essential concepts in nutritional genomics; and perceptions toward genetic testing. Methods: Prospective cross-sectional study was conducted among dietitians and nutritionists using an online questionnaire. The data were analyzed using descriptive and analytical statistics. Results: About 142 dietitians and nutritionists were included in the study. The majority of the respondents were female (88%). Around 61.3% had work experience ranging between 1 and 5 years. The knowledge score on nutritional genomics indicated 9% (n = 13) of them scored high, 42% (n = 59) scored medium, and 49% (n = 70) scored low scores. The average knowledge score was 42.3%, indicating a low level of knowledge of genetics and nutritional genomics. The mean perception was 3.85 on a scale from 1 (extremely negative) to 5 (extremely positive), which may be an overall positive perception of applying nutritional genomics into practical and effective dietary recommendations. The findings revealed a statistically significant link between knowledge and perception level, on-job training, and continuing education in nutritional genomics. Perception scores were shown to be positively associated with higher knowledge levels. Conclusions: Dietitians and nutritionists have low knowledge but a high perception level of nutritional genomic. Most of them were informed about nutrigenomics and had a favorable opinion, regardless of whether they had previously studied nutrigenomics as a college-level subject.","PeriodicalId":14233,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Nutrition, Pharmacology, Neurological Diseases","volume":"20 1","pages":"123 - 131"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75456426","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Stress among caregivers is a public health concern because of its relation to higher costs for the person, family, and the healthcare system. Aim: The aim of this review is to analyze the impact of caregiver burden of parents who have a child with asthma. Methods: The electronic databases PubMed, Cochrane Library, and the Web of Science databases were searched to access related articles. Searching was understood and the articles published between 2011 and 2020 were selected. The search terms used in databases were \"Caregiver Burden\" [Mesh] OR Caregiver Burdens [tiab] OR Care Burden [tiab] OR \"Social Support\" [Mesh] OR \"Stress, Psychological\" [Mesh] OR Psychological Stresses [tiab] OR Psychologic Stress [tiab] OR Psychological Stressor [tiab] OR AND \"Quality of Life\" [Mesh] OR Health-Related Quality Of Life [tiab] OR Health Related Quality Of Life [tiab] OR HRQOL [tiab] AND “Asthma\" [Mesh] OR Bronchial Asthma [tiab] OR childhood asthma [tiab] AND \"parents/education\" [MeSH Terms]. The quality evaluation of the studies was performed by independent reviewer utilizing Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklists’. Results: Initially, 46 studies that met the searching strategies stated above were found on databases. Eighteen of them remained following the analysis of their abstracts according to inclusion criteria. All the articles were published in English and out of them 18 studies were of descriptive design. Conclusion: Caring for an asthmatic child obviously has a negative influence on parents as caregivers. One of the study’s most notable findings is that asthma affects both the youngster and his primary caregiver. Second, there is a scarcity of information on interventional strategies for asthmatic children’s caregivers. Appropriate caregiving intervention programmes targeted at promoting caregiver well-being will be necessary in the future. The goals of these programmes should be to help parents improve their disease management abilities, their quality of life, and their daily routines. All of the planned initiatives will surely improve the quality of life for both parents and children.","PeriodicalId":14233,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Nutrition, Pharmacology, Neurological Diseases","volume":"450 1","pages":"89 - 95"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75087476","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The lunch box survey was an attempt to identify the contents in the lunch box of the primary school children of the Rural Konni block. The food items brought in the lunch box were classified into cereals, vegetables, fruits, non-vegetarian foods, and fried foods. This is captured using a pre-designed questionnaire with a pictorial representation of the lunch box. A cereal-rich diet combined with vegetables with infrequent meat consumption and no fruits was the dietary consumption pattern in the school children of rural Konni. A changing trend for liking energy-dense foods is shown by the majority of the students. This calls for further novel innovations to develop a healthy school food environment.","PeriodicalId":14233,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Nutrition, Pharmacology, Neurological Diseases","volume":"28 1","pages":"64 - 67"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90517246","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
