Aggregating residential houses and then analyzing DR on these can help understand and manage DR better. Aggregation can also help the utilities understand the patterns of electrical consumption for a geographical region, area, community. This pattern learning process could further help utility companies to plan the resources appropriately and save revenue while purchasing power and help the power producers to commission new power plants appropriately. Big Data technologies can further make things easier and give granular control over data that is generated from various electrical measuring instruments and climate control equipment installed at a residential building. In this research work, a group of residential houses of particular area were simulated on GridLAB-D to generate power consumption data and indoor temperature data for every minute during the month of July. Big Data technologies like Apache Spark and Apache Cassandra were used to analyze the data and run real time jobs to calculate DR times and unit level DR lift off times to meet user specified comfort levels and compliance standards. Only heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems on the remote houses are turned off during the DR times, and two way smart thermostats are considered to be present in the units to pick up the DR signals.","PeriodicalId":142240,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Conference on Technologies for Sustainability (SusTech)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129386498","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this work, different flocculants were evaluated for the flocculation of microalgae biomass of Acutodesmus obliquus, aiming to achieve a biomass recovery efficiency similar to that of a centrifugation process, with minimum loss of lipid content. Flocculation was tested with ferric chloride (FeCl3) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) at different concentrations and compared to a sample centrifuged at 7000 rpm. The evaluated parameters were remaining absorbance (540 nm) in the clarified medium, and concentration of lipids in the recovered biomass. When FeCl3 was used at 0.2 mmol.L−1 as flocculant, the biomass recovery efficiency was as high as 96.8%. Meanwhile, the highest efficiency with NaOH, 93.5%, was achieved at 8 mmol.L−1. The efficiency with centrifugation was lower than with either flocculants: 91.7%. However, flocculation with NaOH caused a significant reduction in lipid content, which did not occur with FeCl3. Flocculation efficiency is also shown to be influenced by initial salt concentration in the culture medium, with a reduction of 79% in efficiency when nutrients concentration increases to 9 mL.L−1 of cultivation.","PeriodicalId":142240,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Conference on Technologies for Sustainability (SusTech)","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126566577","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, environmental conditions in the field often differ from the standard spectrum; this change in spectrum is known as spectral shift or spectral mismatch. This paper discusses the impact of spectral shift on various PV technologies and presents models that have been proposed to characterize this effect when modeling PV system performance. It concludes that changes in spectrum significantly impact PV performance and should be accounted for in standard PV simulation software.","PeriodicalId":142240,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Conference on Technologies for Sustainability (SusTech)","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131855290","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is assumed that the microgrid has black start capability and that external generation is available for purchase while grid connected to satisfy additional demand. The microgrid is developed such that in addition to renewable, non-dispatchable generation from solar, wind and run of the river hydroelectric resources, local dispatchable generation is available in the form of small hydroelectric and moderately sized gas and coal fired facilities. To accurately model demand, the load model is separated into independent residential, commercial, industrial, and PEV charging systems. These are dispatched and committed based on a mixed integer linear program developed to minimize the cost of generation and load shedding while satisfying constraints associated with line limits, conservation of energy, and ramp rates of the generation units. The model extends a research tool to longer time frames intended for policy setting and educational environments and provides a realistic and intuitive understanding of beneficial and challenging aspects of electrification of vehicles combined with integration of green electricity production.","PeriodicalId":142240,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Conference on Technologies for Sustainability (SusTech)","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123511934","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is a matter of satisfying the present needs without burdening future generations. This affects in particular the three fields of economy, ecology and society. An outstanding challenge is to handle the demographic change and the consequences of an aging society. A social goal is to enable persons with need of care to lead an independent life in their own homes as long as possible. Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) solutions can support them by the use of technology. We have investigated how to build sustainable AAL solutions. Our engineering approach leads to such solutions resorting to a sensor-actuator-infrastructure which is already available. This leads to improvements in all three core areas of sustainable development.","PeriodicalId":142240,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Conference on Technologies for Sustainability (SusTech)","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126471779","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cost, both for the power and for the startup are major considerations. Cost of power must undercut coal in third world countries to meet the goal of displacing fossil fuel. The variables investigated in the experiments were: salinity, carbon source (glycerol and glucose) and photoperiod. From the growth kinetics, and the analysis of biomass and lipid production, it was possible to determine the productivity of the studied microalgae species. The lipids production increased due to the addition of a carbon source to the culture medium. Furthermore, the carbon source addition in the beginning of the cultivation provided the best result. Among the tested salinity values in the experiments, the one that resulted in the highest microalgae growth was 15 ‰. The best assimilated carbon source by the microalgae was glycerol at a concentration of 0.1 M, providing cultures with up to 1.3 g/L of biomass. Mixotrophic cultivation with a photoperiod of 24 h of light in the presence of glycerol resulted in 338.97 mg/L of lipids, which was ∼80% higher than the autotrophic one.","PeriodicalId":142240,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Conference on Technologies for Sustainability (SusTech)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122825373","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Energy analysis helps researchers better understand life cycle energy consumption of vehicles, and assists manufacturers to set effective energy conservation goals. Previous studies have been focusing on the machine-level energy modeling and analysis, but higher-level energy characteristics are less well understood. In particular, the investigation of influential variables on plant level energy consumption is believed to be essential, but previous studies have proved insufficient. This paper is intended to analyze and identify the key variables in plant level energy consumption of an automotive manufacturing plant. In this paper, the authors summarize three main categories of key variables, and provide guidance for further plant and higher level energy modeling and conservation.","PeriodicalId":142240,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Conference on Technologies for Sustainability (SusTech)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117106911","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These sanctions were almost tolerable for Iran since they did not affect Iran's oil industry which is the main source of foreign currency for the country. The recent sanctions on Iran's oil-dependent economy starting from 2012, put a lot of pressure on the country and the overall country experienced very volatile conditions. As the result, the government started to negotiate with the world that led to the agreement between P5+1 and Iran that is generally referred to as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Although this agreement released some of the pressures on Iran's economy, Iran's experience during the sanction period and the time that the oil price was low, convinced the government to start investing on localization of the industry. The term localization here refers to the activities that try to produce needed materials of the industry inside the country instead of importing them. The government's attempt in the past years for localization especially in the car industry, caused a sustainable development in this area. This sustainability was shown in the recent drop off of the oil price in 2016 which did not affect the car market like the past similar events. In this paper, we will try to model the effective parameters in Iran's car industry including the localization and also propose a model relating localization, car industry and sustainability to describe the effect of localization on creating a sustainable development in the car industry.","PeriodicalId":142240,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Conference on Technologies for Sustainability (SusTech)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116108102","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
