Based on a phylogenetic analysis, it is assigned to the noverca-group of the subgenus Helicophagella Enderlein by the combination of: male sternite 5 with a pad of densely-set short, thick, spine-like bristles on the postero-median margin at the base of each lobe; elongated syntergosternite 7+8; and distiphallus with small vesica, sclerotized and dorsally-directed harpes, and adpressed lateral styles. The species is remarkably different from other members of this subgenus in the greatly expanded and strongly laterally compressed lateral styles and juxta raised into a median hyaline crest. Two longitudinal, largely parallel structures situated ventrally on the distiphallus and proximal to the harpes are interpreted as being the vesica. This unusual shape of vesica is a possible synapomorphy with S. hirticrus Pandellé, 1896. The possible monophyly of Helicophagella and its division into the mainly copro- or necrophagous melanura-group and the snail-feeding noverca-group is briefly discussed. Zusammenfassung Sarcophaga (Helicophagella) carlestolrai sp. n. wird aus Südspanien beschrieben. Basierend auf einer phylogenetischen Analyse wird die neue Art durch die folgenden Merkmale der noverca-Gruppe innerhalb der Untergattung Helicophagella Enderlein zugeordnet: Männliches Sternit 5 jeweils mit einem dicht besetzten Polster aus kurzen, dicken, stachelartigen Borsten am postero-medianen Rand an der Basis der Loben; einem länglichen Syntergosternit 7+8; und einem Distiphallus mit kleiner Vesica, sklerotisierten und dorsad gerichteten Harpes und lateral stark kompressten Styli. Die Art unterscheidet sich von den anderen Arten dieser Untergattung durch die stark erweiterten und seitlich komprimierten lateralen Styli und die zu einem medianen hyalinen Kamm ausgezogene Juxta. Zwei longitudinale, weitgehend parallele Strukturen, die sich ventral auf dem Distiphallus und proximal der Harpes befinden, werden als Vesica interpretiert. Diese ungewöhnliche Form der Vesica ist eine mögliche Synapomorphie mit S. hirticrus Pandellé, 1896. Die mögliche Monophylie von Helicophagella und ihre Unterteilung in die hauptsächlich kopro- oder nekrophag lebende melanura-Gruppe und die schneckenfressende noverca-Gruppe wird kurz diskutiert.","PeriodicalId":141328,"journal":{"name":"Stuttgarter Beiträge zur Naturkunde A","volume":"236 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133616572","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Zielke","doi":"10.18476/2023.820585","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.18476/2023.820585","url":null,"abstract":"Abstract For the identification of many Afrotropical muscids, the keys drawn up by Emden have primarily been used over the past 80 years. Thus, in the course of time, various Dichaetomyia specimens have also been assigned to Dichaetomyia ovata (Stein) using this key. However, a comparison of eleven D. ovata specimens from different origins with the only extant syntype of this species revealed that all specimens not only showed a different combination of taxonomic characters than the syntype, but also differed significantly from one another in some cases. Although they all looked very similar at first glance and, like the syntype, were mostly yellow or brownish yellow in colour, they differed in morphology, chaetotaxy and colouration. Four new species, native to Liberia, Madagascar, Nigeria and Tanzania, have been identified from within this small pool of specimens previously assigned to D. ovata. Apparently, the only available identification key was not sufficiently differentiating for D. ovata to assign these specimens to different species. To prevent future misidentifications, D. ovata is redescribed in detail based on the syntype. The new species, Dichaetomyia libovata sp. n., Dichaetomyia malovata sp. n., Dichaetomyia niovata sp. n. and Dichaetomyia tanovata sp. n., are described, major differences from D. ovata are discussed and each new species is compared to the closest similar species in the group. A key to distinguishing D. ovata from the newly described species previously assigned to D. ovata is also presented. Zusammenfassung Für die Bestimmung vieler afrotropischer Musciden wurden in den letzten achtzig Jahren überwiegend die von Emden erstellten Bestimmungstabellen benutzt. So wurden im Laufe der Zeit auch diverse Exemplare von Dichaetomyia auf Basis des Bestimmungsschlüssels der Art Dichaetomyia ovata (Stein) zugeordnet. Ein Vergleich von elf Exemplaren von D. ovata unterschiedlicher Herkunft, darunter dem einzigen noch existierenden Syntype dieser Art ergab jedoch, dass alle Exemplare nicht nur eine andere Kombination von taxonomischen Merkmalen aufwiesen als der Syntype, sondern dass sich einige auch deutlich voneinander unterschieden. Obwohl sie auf den ersten Blick alle sehr ähnlich aussahen und wie der Syntype meist überwiegend gelb oder bräunlich-gelb gefärbt waren, unterschieden sie sich in Morphologie, Chaetotaxie und auch in ihrer Färbung. Vier neue Arten, die aus Liberia, Madagaskar, Nigeria und Tansania stammen, wurden aus dieser kleinen Gruppe früher D. ovata zugeordneten Exemplare identifiziert. Offensichtlich war der einzig verfügbare Bestimmungsschlüssel für D. ovata nicht ausreichend differenzierend, um die Exemplare verschiedenen Arten zuzuordnen. Um zukünftigen Fehlidentifikationen vorzubeugen, wird D. ovata basierend auf dem Syntype neu charakterisiert. Die gefundenen neuen Arten, Dichaetomyia libovata sp. n.. Dichaetomyia malovata sp. n., Dichaetomyia niovata sp. n. und Dichaetomyia tanovata sp. n., werden beschr","PeriodicalId":141328,"journal":{"name":"Stuttgarter Beiträge zur Naturkunde A","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117127396","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

He spent his childhood in Frankfurt am Main, where he went to the Holzhausenschule primary school from 1931 and to the KaiserWilhelmGymnasium from 1935, obtaining his final diploma (Abitur) in 1942. Already in these younger years he was fascinated by entomology, started collecting Lepidoptera and Coleoptera, and reg ularly visited the Senckenberg Museum in Frankfurt. In his leisure time he joined a civil gliding group, receiving his pilot’s license. From 1943, during the Second World War, Walter was a transport pilot in the air force. His first entomological collections, kept in the home of his parents, were destroyed during that time. From November 1945 he studied at the Technical Uni versity of Darmstadt, with a focus on construction and statics, and received his engineering diploma in 1950. After that, he joined an engineering company in Mainz and later managed its branch in Mannheim. Walter mar ried Ortrud Göpelt (*June 1935) in 1953. Together they built a house in Wilhelmsfeld, near Heidelberg, and about ten years later they built a larger one in WaldMichel bach (Odenwald). They had six children: ulricH (*1955), ursula (*1957), HannelOre (*1959), dietricH (*1961), Gisela (*1964) and Gudrun (*1972). Walter loved classi cal music and learned the piano already during his school years; all of his children received an education with musi cal instruments, and the sounds of a flute, violin, guitar or piano could always be heard from the various rooms of the house. In 1994, once their children had all left home, the couple decided to move into a smaller house in Schwan feld, near Schweinfurt. Walter Heinz collected beetles outside of Europe for the first time in 1971, when he drove to Turkey with the whole family. In the following years they reached also Iran by car, with a focus on Carabus Linnaeus. In 1979 came his first travels by plane, to the Himalayas of northern Pakistan, with his indestructible wife, and from 1990 to Mexico, to collect Calosoma Weber. In the win ter of 1996/1997 they travelled for the first time to Africa (Kenya, South Africa) to hunt species of Anthia Weber. The first visit by the Heinz couple to Argentina and Chile, in search of Ceroglossus Solier, was conducted in 1998. On all these travels, Walter drove rental cars over long distances and on difficult routes, whereas Ortrud has no driver’s license. The last travels led Walter and Ortrud to Georgia in the Caucasus, in the summers of 2018 and 2019, where they travelled with local driver and guide nika (known also to other entomologists). By that time, Walter was already 94 years old, Ortrud 84, and they had collected beetles for almost 70 years. In several pub lications, Ortrud offered vivid recollections of their joint travel adventures (see Publications of Ortrud Heinz, below).
