We developed a prototype that allows users with diminished motoric skills to use voice recognition software on a smartphone to control a house's front door, lights, telephone, TV and PC. We focused on affordable hardware and open-source software to maximize adaptability and extensibility, which is required for individual solutions. The development followed a user-centric design process, where a group of 10 multiple sclerosis patients participated in workshops to assess their requirements and evaluate the usability of the implemented prototype.","PeriodicalId":140232,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 10th International Conference on PErvasive Technologies Related to Assistive Environments","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128728138","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A relative high right frontal alpha activity compared to the left shows an active cognitive state which is relaxed and alert, conducive for cognition. A person's engagement in an activity can be measured by the ratio of Beta to Alpha and Theta waves. In our experiment, we aimed to increase some of the cognitive activities, by combining video and audio brain entertainment, neural feedback gaming, and asymmetric protocol. Our hypothesis is that brain entertainment and neural feedback can enhance a person's cognitive abilities. We conducted the experiment with six participants. During the experiment the brain activity of the users was logged and used for measuring engagement and for feedback for the game, using the EEG headband.","PeriodicalId":140232,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 10th International Conference on PErvasive Technologies Related to Assistive Environments","volume":"120 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123112639","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the complex manual manufacturing process there is still a lack of suitable models for the visually impaired. Millions of 3D models are currently available on the internet and can be searched by dedicated retrieval sites. Most of them can be printed by 3D printers; however, this often isn't a trivial task even for sighted users. Blind peoples' self-dependence could be drastically increased if they were able to autonomously print 3D models at home. This paper analyses the individual tasks to actually print 3D models and adapts them to steps accessible for blind people. We introduce a workflow for the combined use of 3D printing software and consumer hardware. We verified our approach by a formal user study with visually impaired people which showed its feasibility.","PeriodicalId":140232,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 10th International Conference on PErvasive Technologies Related to Assistive Environments","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124465220","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main vision of CISMOB is to promote innovative ways to reduce carbon footprint and increase the sustainability of urban areas by improving the efficiency in the use of urban transport infrastructure through ICT. In a context of increasing availability of sensor technology to monitor and record large amounts of data, a common challenge to policy makers is to identify the best practices to take advantage of these new sources of data. Namely, how can we use this information to prioritize intervention areas, to manage efficiently current road networks, to inform citizens and motivate them to choose more sustainable mobility options. CISMOB is focused on improving the implementation of regional policies and local mobility programmers by having a thorough understanding about the different transport related impacts and the main vulnerabilities associated to different zones of the territory. Policy and local mobility programs should not be focused in minimizing a particular parameter (ex. Levels of congestion), but rather to promote holistic approaches. This work briefly describes the exchange of expertise process to achieve policy change and it summarizes best practices identified so far that may be explored in other European Regions.","PeriodicalId":140232,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 10th International Conference on PErvasive Technologies Related to Assistive Environments","volume":"10 47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129787726","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aims to assess the relationship between cognition and performance in a simulated industrial environment by employing humanoid robots to assess the stated metrics. This system proposes to develop a smart vocational assessment and intervention service system that assesses a worker's needs for training and rehabilitation in an experimental setup that simulates a factory. The proposed approach collects and analyzes multi-sensing data and recommends personalized interventions that can improve the performance of and individual worker. In our implementation, Aldebaran's NAO robot gradually learns the features and thresholds needed to construct a decision tree that gradually learns the expected Lego model by interacting with the user. The results from 615 test samples show that the NAO robot is able to correctly identify the Lego blocks configuration assembled by the user with an accuracy 81% of the time. Finally, we discuss the limitations of the proposed solution and we suggest future contributions that can overpass these limitations and boost the accuracy of our proposed solution.","PeriodicalId":140232,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 10th International Conference on PErvasive Technologies Related to Assistive Environments","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126302150","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Often this involves gathering extensive data to monitor physical and cognitive decline at the expense of an individual's privacy, with an underlying, often implicit, assumption that older adults no longer need much privacy. We consider such issues in the context of a project which seeks to promote the well-being of older adults. We conducted interviews with 20 older adults (10 males, 10 females, mean age=73) to ask, under what health and wellbeing circumstances would they wish to protect their privacy? Using thematic analysis, we uncovered six distinct reasons why older adults want to maintain privacy: protection from harm, autonomy, to present a positive social identity, to break free from social norms, to protect others, and to protect their own self-concept. We conclude that privacy is a highly valued resource for older adults and one that enables them to live fulfilling lives. We consider the design implications of our findings, noting that designers should aim to protect privacy from the outset, rather than viewing privacy as a 'bolt-on' that would inhibit data collection under specific circumstances. These concerns speak to the 'paternalism' agenda, in that older adults should be considered as active agents in the management of their own data disclosures.","PeriodicalId":140232,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 10th International Conference on PErvasive Technologies Related to Assistive Environments","volume":"31 15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128559946","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Over the last years, many systems using head-mounted displays (HMDs) and in-situ projection have been proposed. We are observing a trend in assistive systems using in-situ projection for supporting workers during work tasks. Recent advances in technology enable robust detection of almost every work step, which is done at workplaces. With this improvement in robustness, a continuous usage of assistive systems at the workplace becomes possible. In this work, we provide results of a long-term study in an industrial workplace with an overall runtime of 11 full workdays. In our study, each participant assembled at least three full workdays using in-situ projected instructions. We separately considered two different user groups comprising expert and untrained workers. Our results show a decrease in performance for expert workers and a learning success for untrained workers.","PeriodicalId":140232,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 10th International Conference on PErvasive Technologies Related to Assistive Environments","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129285406","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
