Considering the case of Kuwait, the collection and disposal of waste has become a major economic and health issue for both the general public and the Kuwaiti government. Addressing and improving current waste disposal challenges, through utilizing (or recovering) basic materials from waste, will benefit society in terms of reductions in costs, pollution and associated negative health impact. The objective of this study was to assess the re-utilization prospects of waste materials (paper, cardboard and cotton) as a substrate for plant growth, consequently serving as a growing medium material, apart from naturally occurring soil. This investigation was conducted across two land plots in the Wafra region, located in Southern Kuwait. The plots were planted with Rhanterium epapposum and Festuca rubra seeds. Temperature, humidity and growth rates were measured during this study. Study results indicated that chemical composition of the growth medium is suitable for local conditions. Furthermore, the soil plot with added growth medium was found to retain moisture for prolonged periods in comparison to the plot lacking in growth medium. Field studies on grass germination and growth rates highlighted that waste-derived substrate is favorable to their development and adaptation within challenging environmental conditions. This investigation can play an important part for introducing and developing the concept of a circular economy within Kuwait, with potential to improve waste management within the country.","PeriodicalId":13980,"journal":{"name":"International journal of environmental science and development","volume":"236 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67453715","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Air samples collected in urban areas, traffic, tourism, industrial clusters, brick kilns, quarries, landfills, and background areas were analyzed for temperature (T), noise, total suspended particulates (TSP), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxides (SO2), ozone (O3), ammonia (NH3), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and hydrogen fluoride (HF). The findings were compared with the Vietnamese standard on air quality. Pearson correlation and principal component analysis (PCA) were performed to recognize the correlation between pollutants and potential pollution sources. The results showed that the average values of air quality parameters in An Giang province during the study period temporally fluctuated but within the allowable limits. Moreover, the air quality parameters were well correlated, especially temperature and ozone. Three PCs obtained from PCA could explain 87.50% of the air quality variations with a significant contribution of all parameters. It is found that CO, NO2 and SO2 originated mainly from traffic and urban areas. While NH3 and H2S were dominant in the landfill areas, HF was from brick kilns. Consequently, the traffic and urban areas are considered the most influential contributors to air pollution in the study area.","PeriodicalId":13980,"journal":{"name":"International journal of environmental science and development","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67453575","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Environmental sensitivity is usually estimated based on various criteria that are related to specific aspects of the physical or environmental conditions in an area combined with its socioeconomic conditions. The main objective of this study was to develop a suitable set of criteria that covers all three aspects, namely, physical, socioeconomic, and environmental conditions, to support sensitivity assessments and zoning in the southeast coastal region of Vietnam, which is the most dynamic developing coastal region in the country. In the study, multiple-criteria decision-making was used to develop the coastal environmental sensitivity criteria and calculate the criteria weights. Remote sensing was used for data collection and geographical information system for the assessment and zoning of the study areas. A set of eight suitable criteria were proposed: coastal type, coast slope, species, nature reserve, population density, vulnerable population, tourism, and aquaculture, with optimal weighting for each criterion was proposed. A thorough site survey with data collection was then conducted in 27 sub-regions of the study area. The proposed criteria were applied to evaluate and zone the areas into four sensitivity levels: low, moderate, high, and extreme, which accounted for 7.41%, 29.63%, 37.04%, and 25.93% of the study area, respectively. Practical and effective solutions were proposed for 17 sub-regions with high and extreme environmental sensitivity. The research results are expected to enhance knowledge of coastal environmental hazards and provide a reference for sustainability decision-making and planning.","PeriodicalId":13980,"journal":{"name":"International journal of environmental science and development","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67453901","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Good emission source data and an understanding of all elements connected to air pollution is the foundation for successful pollution abatement. The study established a model for crosswind-integrated concentrations by solving the advection-diffusion equation using the reducible and irreducible techniques and utilizes it to forecast the concentration of PMX pollutants released from a stack in Jos, Nigeria. Data was collected from the Grand Cereals environment using a Handheld Portable Particle Counter for PMx with model number CW-HAT 200 for a year. High values of fine particulates recorded in the study are worrisome because they represent a threat to human health. Moreover, the monitored and modeled results evidenced a higher risk for human health in specific points, particularly areas less than 100m away from the stack which is seen as deriving from the stack emissions. Electrostatic precipitators or mist collectors can be installed to reduce the PMX emissions and its impact on human health. We proposed that the boiler stack be replaced with a taller one and that people living and working near the industry wear a nasal mask to mitigate inhaling dangers. The model performs better in estimating PM2.5 concentrations under unstable conditions and is recommended for PM2.5 monitoring.","PeriodicalId":13980,"journal":{"name":"International journal of environmental science and development","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67453927","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Affected by the rise of sea level, it will change the distribution characteristics of sea tides, waves and currents. When the distribution of tides, waves and currents in the sea area changes, it may cause changes in the overall environmental characteristics of the estuary and coastal areas, and further affects the function of coastal protection facilities. This study takes the sea area of Yilan as an example, and analyzes the problem of sea level rise in the three-in-one climate change (including sea level rise, typhoon and heavy rain). For the analysis of sea level rise, this study calculates tide level data in three ways, the first is simple moving average (SMA), then there are empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) in the hilbert-huang transform (HHT) for sea level rise analysis. The use of ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) is because when modal confusion occurs in empirical mode decomposition (EMD), the occurrence of modal confusion can be reduced by adding the decomposed signal to the white noise sequence. Comparing the analysis results of the three respectively, the result obtained by using simple moving average (SMA) is the smallest (2.78 mm/yr), and the result obtained by using ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) calculation is the largest (4.11mm/yr). By analyzing the results obtained, it can be provided for assessing future hydrological and environmental changes based on climate change conditions.","PeriodicalId":13980,"journal":{"name":"International journal of environmental science and development","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67454594","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To examine the possible effect of the solvent of chitosan on its performance in reducing the turbidity of eutrophic water, different types of acid, i.e. acetic acid and hydrochloric acid, were used to dissolve chitosan, in which the concentration of each acid was also varied. The chitosan dissolved in acetic acid was labeled as Chit-AA while the one being dissolved in HCl was labeled as Chit-HCl. A standard jar test apparatus was used to determine the optimum dosage and coagulation pH for both Chit-AA dan Chit-HCl. Both Chit-AA and Chit-HCl gave optimum results at a dosage of 10 mg/L, where the turbidity reductions after coagulation with Chit-AA and Chit-HCl were 64.78% and 85.33%, respectively. The optimum coagulation pH for Chit-AA was pH 7 while Chit-HCl gave an optimum result at pH 8. The concentration of the acid being used to dissolve chitosan appeared to affect the decrease in turbidity, where a higher acid concentration lead to a higher decrease in turbidity.","PeriodicalId":13980,"journal":{"name":"International journal of environmental science and development","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136209829","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
