A particular use case of the Italian Demo of the H2020 project \"Optimal System-Mix Of flexibility Solutions for European electricity\" (OSMOSE) is to demonstrate multiple grid services provision based on DSR by seven industrial plants distributed in a HV grid area between Apulia and Basilicata. Sites have been managed by three Balance Service Providers (BSPs). On each industrial plant, project partners first have performed an energy audit and then they have installed all the electric and TLC equipment needed to test and manage the flexibilities identified. The main result of these activities was that the hardware required for DSR comes at a relatively small price compared to the magnitude of loads that could be controlled. Purpose of this work is to provide an analysis of possible benefits and limits of DSR for the grid as well as to direct a possible new future market strategy for these resources.","PeriodicalId":138886,"journal":{"name":"2021 AEIT International Annual Conference (AEIT)","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126819105","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, it is presented the first attempt of a novel approach in the detection of surface discharges, based on AI and computer vision state of the art techniques. The research is carried out in the frame of an active collaboration with TERNA (the Italian TSO). The videos collected by the camera of the LANPRIS testing station for the purpose of ageing monitoring, have been used to explore the potentials of an object detection approach using an artificial neural network to recognize insulators in a video and to distinguish between normal behaviour insulators from those subject to surface discharge phenomena. The input data are described in the context of the LANPRIS experimentation, the model, chosen for the object detection, and the pipeline, built to process the video files, are introduced; the tools, used for this work, are widely illustrated and the results discussed. This study is the initial part of a larger work aimed at experimenting artificial intelligence and computer vision techniques in systems that monitor very important electrical system components, such as high-voltage line insulators.","PeriodicalId":138886,"journal":{"name":"2021 AEIT International Annual Conference (AEIT)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126525162","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An prediction-based resource allocation is characterized by higher operation costs due to: i) resource underestimate that leads to Quality of Service degradation; ii) used cloud resource over allocation when a resource overestimate occurs. To reduce such a cost, we propose cost-aware prediction algorithm able to minimize the sum of the two cost components previously mentioned. We compare in a real network and traffic scenario the proposed technique to the traditional one in which the Root Mean Squared Error. We show home the proposed solution allows for cost advantages in the order of 20%.","PeriodicalId":138886,"journal":{"name":"2021 AEIT International Annual Conference (AEIT)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115242946","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this context, Ensiel, a consortium of Italian universities active in power systems research, developed a new DTR solution, which is based on a self-organizing sensor network composed by cooperative smart nodes deployed along the line route, having as final output the loadability curve of the line. An opto-mechanical investigation based on finite element method is carried out. The behavior of the embedded optical fiber and the composite material is simulated through a multiphysical model. The electromagnetic investigation is focused on the effect of the birefringence induced by the axial stresses on the propagation modes. The Bragg wavelength shift and the triaxial strain sensitivities are derived by considering transfer matrix method based on the coupled mode theory. A refined design of the flat fiber with a thinned asymmetric cladding is performed to obtain two different strain transfers between the sensing regions, improving the discrimination of triaxial strains. Moreover, the advantages of the designed optical fiber sensor with respect to standard optical fibers are discussed, paving the way for future developments.","PeriodicalId":138886,"journal":{"name":"2021 AEIT International Annual Conference (AEIT)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131788961","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Indeed, the increase in renewable power sources and the progressive shut off of coal-fired power plants are transitioning the generation from a centralized to a decentralized paradigm. The latter may cause issues in a grid that was originally designed taking as granted the presence of several big power plants to be used as actuators for the system control. Considering voltage control, the actual control architecture is based on a hierarchical structure applied to a given set of rigidly subdivided control areas. Although such architecture is currently capable of maintain voltage control on the grid, the increase in converter interfaced generators (due to renewables exploitation) and the decrease of the buses short circuit powers (due to high power plants shut-off) may decrease its effectiveness in the future. To this aim, in this paper a coordinated decoupling voltage control is proposed, capable of using all the available reactive power sources on the grid as actuators. The issue of controlling a system with a variable number of actuators (due to generators connection and disconnection) is taken into account, proposing a suitable solution for avoiding transients during the switch between controllers having different output dimension. A brief discussion about communication (among actuators and controller) performances required for implementing the proposed control in the power system is also given.","PeriodicalId":138886,"journal":{"name":"2021 AEIT International Annual Conference (AEIT)","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124466884","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The distribution system has to host energy production from renewables, and new high consumption loads, e.g., battery charging for e-mobility and smarter solutions are necessary. The POSEIDON project aims at defining optimal control strategies of microgrids in the port areas, including the management of electric vehicles with public charging stations, energy storage systems installed on boats, flexible loads, and Renewable Energy Sources (RES). The paper presents the impact of the vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and boat-to-grid (B2G) on a port microgrid. A Multi-Agent control system developed for the optimal charging of batteries is also presented. Results derived by applying the methodology to a real case study demonstrate the methodology’s effectiveness.","PeriodicalId":138886,"journal":{"name":"2021 AEIT International Annual Conference (AEIT)","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120987817","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper shows that an in-depth dedicated research activity is needed to solve these issues, in order that the current striking development of HVDC cable systems can go further in the future. This is important also because HVDC cable technologies have been singled out as a fundamental tool to increase the penetration of renewables in the electrical energy marked, so as to foster the green transition. These issues have also been treated in the framework of a long-lasting cooperation between the Roma La Sapienza University and the University of Bologna, which then became a partnership between TERNA and the University of Bologna, eventually including the EnSiEl consortium.","PeriodicalId":138886,"journal":{"name":"2021 AEIT International Annual Conference (AEIT)","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132144248","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since these new equipment are mostly connected to the MV and LV levels of the electricity network, their widespread implementation will substantially impact electric distribution systems planning an operation. The analysis of future development scenarios and the impact of new control techniques are, therefore, preparatory for the evolution of the planning and operation of electric networks, specifically the distribution networks. The simulations reported in this paper integrates the network data, including a georeferenced description of the distribution network, with external public databases information. Thanks to the proposed approach, the impact of the new equipment can be studied considering different scenario hypotheses investigating the evolution of the distribution network in detail. In particular, the methodology is applied to the distribution network of Brescia, a city in Northern Italy.","PeriodicalId":138886,"journal":{"name":"2021 AEIT International Annual Conference (AEIT)","volume":"84 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133399862","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The set of power quality data used for this work, consists of voltage dips recorded during the years 2016-2020. By using all data concerning the voltage dips, e-distribuzione has conducted a deep analysis of this phenomenon, in terms of categories of dips per intensity and duration, their origin and their distribution and number during the years, taking into account the peculiarity of any considered period. Furthermore, it is presented a comparison between the influence of structural parameters of transmission system and distribution substation elements and scheme, regarding the disturbance propagations due to a voltage dip, and also how coordination of DSO protection system adopted to improve the continuity of supply indexes (SAIDI and SAIFI) influences the characteristics of voltage dips. Lastly, some reflections about the importance of technical interventions into the substations of MV customers directly connected to the distribution network, so called \"immunization-oriented\", to contrast effectively the disturbances coming from the distribution network, are presented.","PeriodicalId":138886,"journal":{"name":"2021 AEIT International Annual Conference (AEIT)","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125617889","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
