A new area is looking at utilization of AdaBoost-type learning methods in biometric fusion domain. These methods rely on an idea that by selecting a variety of biometric classifiers the error rate can be reduced. This paper presents a new evolutionary algorithm based on the multi-objective genetic approach, which automatically preserves diversity in face detection system. The proposed algorithm creates classifiers based on the amount of error computed for each class, and then uses multi-objective genetic algorithm to combine them to produce a set of powerful ensembles. The application is developed for face detection biometric system.","PeriodicalId":137627,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Biometrics and Kansei Engineering","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130845089","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, a precise elaboration of fluctuations in the secretion of these biomarkers in the time series against stress; especially against a rather mild stressful task is not yet clearly illuminated. In this study, we used the cortisol, a major glucocorticoid, as a biomarker of mental stress for 1) illustrating the precise stress-response in the time series, and 2) investigating a congruity of cortisol as the biomarker for a mild mental workload. Ten male university students were inscribed to conduct a simple, easy, and monotonous mental arithmetic task for about an hour with intermissions, so as to emulate a mild mental workload. As a result, salivary cortisol depicted an accumulative increase during mild mental workloads, while no marked difference was obtained in the heart rate and its variability. It suggests the slow and long-lasting properties in the stress-response of the cortisol unlike as in autonomous nervous system indices, and therefore plausibly demonstrates the possible candidacy of cortisol as a biomarker for a mild mental load.","PeriodicalId":137627,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Biometrics and Kansei Engineering","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131308469","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Some products have shapes or parts that don't fulfill the consumer's desires and needs. This mean that often, choice of a consumer is inspired by the shape of a product. Therefore, It might be interesting to study on perception of shape in terms of semantic associations. The aim of this study is to investigate people's perception on gender of 3D-shape in terms of semantic association such as \"feminine\" or \"masculine\". In this paper we observed the effect of variable base on perceiving gender kansei of 3D-shapes. To assess base-variance of 3D-shape, we examined whether convexity and concavity of base in the context of sharp and curved forms. Results of our psychophysical experiment will be very important and helpful in the kansei-driven design.","PeriodicalId":137627,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Biometrics and Kansei Engineering","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126620086","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is inspired by the negative selection mechanism attending the discrimination between self and nonself molecules in living organisms. Our approach incorporates two types of detectors: binary and real-valued. Relatively short binary detectors are used for primary detection, while the real valued detectors are used to resolve eventual doubts. Such a hybrid solution is much more economical in comparison with \"pure\" approaches. The binary detectors are faster than real-valued ones with respect to the number of operations needed to compare two items. Thus, we gain simplicity and speed of comparisons.","PeriodicalId":137627,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Biometrics and Kansei Engineering","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125140669","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The processes of information decoding and neurons’ communication mechanisms are still in a debate. Apart from the numerous researches into those areas, significant attention has given to the synaptic plasticity, which is suspected to have direct relationship with information processing of neurons. As per the biology, synaptic computation can be mainly divided into three plasticity processes, homeostasis, short-term and long-term. The long-term plasticity is considered as the main phenomena related to learning and memory formation; the roles of short-term plasticity and homeostasis plasticity have direct influences to synaptic efficacy and thereby to long-term plasticity. A few researches are being carried out to in cooperate the homeostasis plasticity to Artificial Neural Networks, are still unable to find real integrated mechanism without damaging to learning process. This paper proposes a new model for synaptic computation. In our approach, we understand the neurons as agents consisting of large number of constituent agents those play the roles of synapses, as transmitters or receivers. The statuses of these constituent agents are subjected to homeostasis and short-term plasticity. The number of active transmitters is an in-parameter for the learning processes. With the proposed model, through the active number of transmitters, learning can be explained as integrated process of three plasticity processes.","PeriodicalId":137627,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Biometrics and Kansei Engineering","volume":"116 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124618444","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unlike adults, children have such a dynamic like and dislike patterns. Even though it is not clear why children cannot cling to one idea for a longer period of time it is obvious that their curiosity tempts to experience a bit of everything. While competing with the dynamic nature of child's mind this research extends the previous work on children's colour selection into a new direction; inquiring what are the determinants of children's colour mapping with emotions? This research argues on two phenomena and exposes the readers mind to a third. Three hypotheses were raised. First; culture influence on detecting affective relations towards colour. Second; Nature influence on detecting affective colour relations. Finally whether there is a trace for an unknown third dimension to grasp the affective reaction towards colour.","PeriodicalId":137627,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Biometrics and Kansei Engineering","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132734721","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two experiments were carried out in order to test the effects of colors on the accuracy and speed of operations. In these experiments, a problem was displayed on the screen with several different color push buttons. Subjects had to select the correct answer from three alternatives and push the answer panel which indicated the answer. The problems changed one after another, and subjects had to push the answer panel quickly. The data, e.g., the time required to answer all problems and the correct answer ratio, was analyzed. We found that the blue one was better than red ones, and formal coloration is better than the other coloration from the viewpoints of accuracy and speed of operations. The authors study aimed to elucidate primitive rules of how color is used in the design of human interfaces.","PeriodicalId":137627,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Biometrics and Kansei Engineering","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129808639","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
