Unidirectional composites with bridging matrix cracks and cross-ply laminates with tunneling cracks in transverse layers and bridging cracks in longitudinal layers are considered. It is shown that bridging matrix cracks may dramatically increase damping in unidirectional CMC due to a dissipation of energy along damaged sections of the fiber-matrix interface (interfacial friction). Such friction is absent in the case of tunneling cracks in transverse layers of cross-ply laminates where the changes in damping due to a degradation of the stiffness remain small. The beams consisted of unidirectional carbon/epoxy face sheets and a variety of core materials, including aluminum honeycomb, PVC closed-cell foams, polyurethane foam and balsa wood. The constituent materials were fully characterized and in the case of the core materials, failure envelopes were developed for biaxial states of stress. Deformation and failure mechanisms were studied experimentally by means of moiré gratings and birefringent coatings. Kounadis","doi":"10.1115/imece2001/ad-23755","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1115/imece2001/ad-23755","url":null,"abstract":"\u0000 Nonlinear dynamic buckling of one-degree-of freedom (1-DOF) undamped systems under step loading (autonomous systems) of constant direction and infinite duration is discussed in detail using Catastrophe Theory. Attention is focused on the relation of static cuspoind catastrophes to the corresponding dynamic catastrophes for 1-DOF autonomous undamped systems by determining properly the dynamic singularity and bifurcational sets for such systems. Using local analysis one has to classify first the total potential energy (TPE) function of the system into one of the elementary Thom’s catastrophes by defining the corresponding control (unfolding) parameters. Subsequently, using global analyses one can readily obtain exact results for the dynamic buckling loads (DBLs) and their imperfection sensitivity of systems subjected to dynamic dual cusp and tilted cusp catastrophes. It was found that the maximum DBL of the dynamic tilted cusp catastrophe corresponds to a limit point lying in the vicinity of the hysteresis point (related to the static tilted cusp catastrophe). Closed form analytical solutions are obtained for the nonlinear problem, and a stability criterion is derived for situations where multiple equilibrium configurations of the structure are possible for a given value of the loading parameter (a combination of the normalized pressure and thermal moment). Critical behavior is seen to be dependent on two critical parameters, a critical value of the loading parameter and a critical value of the membrane force. Extensive numerical simulations based on these solutions reveal characteristic behavior of the system. This behavior includes, bifurcation buckling, asymptotic buckling, sling-shot buckling and pre-limit point snap-through buckling. The upper and lower shell elements of the stiffened composite system are considered as dissimilar, orthotropic shallow shells. The upper relatively narrow stiffening shell strip is centrally located and adhesively bonded to the lower main shell element In the theoretical formulation, a “First Order Shear Deformation Shell Theory (FSDST)” is employed. The complete set of the shallow shell dynamic equations (including the stress resultant-displacement and the constitutive equations) and the equations of the thin flexible, adhesive layer are first reduced to a set of first order system of ordinary differential equations. This final set forms the governing equations of the problem. Then, they are integrated by means of the “Modified Transfer Matrix Method”. In the adhesive layer, the “hard” and the “soft” adhesive effects are considered. It was found that the material characteristics of the adhesive layer influence the mode shapes and the corresponding natural frequencies of the composite shallow shell panel system.
