The other two edges may be clamped, simply supported or free, or they may be elastically supported. The transverse displacement (w) is assumed as sinusoidal in the direction of loading (x), and a power series is assumed in the lateral (y) direction (i.e., the method of Frobenius). Applying the boundary conditions yields the eigenvalue problem of finding the roots of a fourth order characteristic determinant. Care must be exercised to obtain adequate convergence for accurate vibration frequencies and buckling loads, as is demonstrated by two convergence tables. Some interesting and useful results for vibration frequencies and buckling loads, and their mode shapes, are presented for a variety of edge conditions and in-plane loadings, especially pure in-plane moments.","PeriodicalId":136170,"journal":{"name":"Contemporary Research in Engineering Mechanics","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-11-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127351549","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The torus under study represents a 90-degree pipe elbow with a pressure load on a portion of its surface. Layer-wise polynomials are used to represent the transverse shear and normal stretch deformations in the shell. These functions are chosen such that displacements and stresses (but not strains) are continuous at the ply interfaces. Both isotropic and composite (cross-ply) versions of the shell are investigated, and the thicknesses of each are varied to see the effect on through-thickness behavior. Significant qualitative and quantitative differences in these behaviors are observed, particularly in the important direct through-thickness (peeling) stress. The contribution of the transverse deformations to strain energy is investigated and, in most of the shells studied, the thickness stretch component is found to be a greater contributor to strain energy than the transverse shear, though the transverse shear contribution is seen to vary more dramatically with changes in shell thickness.","PeriodicalId":136170,"journal":{"name":"Contemporary Research in Engineering Mechanics","volume":"87 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-11-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122433062","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A computer code that scales up constituent micromechanics level material properties to the structure level and accounts for all possible failure modes is used for the simulation of composite degradation under loading. Damage initiation, growth, accumulation, and propagation to fracture are included in the simulation. Design implications with regard to defect and damage tolerance of integrally stiffened composite structures are examined. A procedure is outlined regarding the use of this type of information for setting quality acceptance criteria, design allowables, damage tolerance, and retirement-for-cause criteria.","PeriodicalId":136170,"journal":{"name":"Contemporary Research in Engineering Mechanics","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-11-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124096895","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Specifically dynamic response of composite structures, with delamination defects, is discussed in this paper. The experimental analysis is performed to capture the effects of nonlinearities on the dynamic response of a beam with multiple delaminations. To describe the opening and closing mode of the delaminated segments of the beam during the vibration, an analysis is performed by using a model with piecewise spring. Then, the nonlinear dynamic response is calculated.","PeriodicalId":136170,"journal":{"name":"Contemporary Research in Engineering Mechanics","volume":"411 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-11-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115993924","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The development starts with formulation of the three-dimensional, anisotropic elasticity problem in which the deformation of the reference surface is expressed in terms of intrinsic two-dimensional variables. The Variational Asymptotic Method is then used to rigorously split this three-dimensional problem into a linear one-dimensional normal-line analysis and a nonlinear two-dimensional “plate” analysis accounting for transverse shear deformation. The normal-line analysis provides a constitutive law between the generalized, two-dimensional strains and stress resultants as well as recovering relations to approximately express the three-dimensional displacement, strain and stress fields in terms of plate variables calculated in the “plate” analysis. It is known that more than one theory that is correct to a given asymptotic order may exist. This nonuniqueness is used to cast a strain energy functional that is asymptotically correct through the second order into a simple “Reissner-like” plate theory. Although it is true that it is not possible to construct an asymptotically correct Reissner-like composite plate theory in general, an optimization procedure is used to drive the present theory as close to being asymptotically correct as possible while maintaining the beauty of Reissner-like formulation. Numerical results are presented to compare with the exact solution as well as a previous similar yet very different theory. The present theory has excellent agreement with the previous theory and exact results.","PeriodicalId":136170,"journal":{"name":"Contemporary Research in Engineering Mechanics","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-11-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114495096","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the method proposed here the damping matrix can be separated from the mass and stiffness matrices and obtained in an independent of them way. Two methods are presented. In the first method it is assumed that all the degrees of freedom can be loaded and measured. Several methods for calculation of the damping, mass and stiffness matrices, using the experimental data are presented. In the second method the load is employed only in some chosen points. However, it is assumed again that all the degrees of freedom are measured.\u0000 In order to identify the damping, stiffness and mass matrices of the structure the measured quantities are forced to comply with the general laws for a linear structure.\u0000 The structure is idealized to be a linear dynamic structure with viscous damping. The measured quantities are measured during the tests at discrete points of the Frequency Response Function.","PeriodicalId":136170,"journal":{"name":"Contemporary Research in Engineering Mechanics","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-11-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114228550","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Constitutive relations are appended to complete the formulation.\u0000 In the “rate version”, the field equations are expressions for the six strain-accelerations (extensional and bending) in terms of the stress-resultants and loads. The analysis follows the concepts of the High-Order Sandwich Plate Theory and employs the variational principle of virtual work for the derivation of the field equations of the fully bonded and delaminated regions. In the penny shaped disbonded region, the delaminated faces can slip horizontally with respect one to another, yet they may be in contact and resist vertical normal compressive stresses. The compressible core is considered using the 3D theory of elasticity and the lamination theory is employed for the modeling of the composite laminated face sheets. The formulation yields coordinate-dependent constitutive relations and governing equations and the solution procedure adopts the Galerkin method in the circumferential direction and the multiple-points shooting method in the radial direction. Numerical results regarding a typical delaminated sandwich plate are presented in terms of deformations and stresses. The results reveal the effect of the anisotropic laminated face sheets on the response of the structure and the influence of the delamination on the overall and, especially, the localized behavior of the plate.","PeriodicalId":136170,"journal":{"name":"Contemporary Research in Engineering Mechanics","volume":"80 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-11-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125874895","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
