Moments are computed from 3-D CAT image functions, 2.5-D range data, space curves, and discrete 3-D points. Objects are recognized by their shapes via moment invariants. Using an algebraic method, scalars and vectors are extracted from a compound of moments using Clebsch-Gordon expansion. The vectors are used to estimate position parameters of the object. Moment features of range data can be used in view-independent object recognition when the three-layer perceptron encodes the feature space distribution of the object in the weights of the network. Objects are recognized from an arbitrary viewpoint by the trained network.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":135937,"journal":{"name":"[1990] Proceedings. 10th International Conference on Pattern Recognition","volume":"85 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-06-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124884562","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cepstral analysis is performed using a digital signal processor. The system generates word candidates by continuous dynamic time warping (DTW) between input speech and word templates. With DTW-LSI chips, the matching between an input pattern and 500 word templates can be carried out in real time. Sentence syntax rules are represented by a finite-state network model, and a real-time search is performed using parallel processors. The system can handle an 8000-word (maximum) vocabulary task, if focus control is performed and the words to be recognized simultaneously are in groups of less than 500. The system has a speaker adaptation function based on vector quantization. The recognition system has been evaluated in a 191-word vocabulary expert system for a nuclear power plant and achieves sentence-recognition accuracies of 94.7% and of 93% with the speaker adaptation. The system can realize a speech dialogue expert system for practical use.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":135937,"journal":{"name":"[1990] Proceedings. 10th International Conference on Pattern Recognition","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-06-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128214731","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The model enables one to optimize the initialization of the texture pyramid. The ideas which are applied during the initialization phase are also applied during the segmentation. The segmentation algorithm is based on the complete linked pyramid and does not require prior knowledge about the number of segments. The segmentation result is obtained by walking along the links, guided by an error measure. The method does not require any predefined thresholds. All experimental PC program has been developed for the 1-D case.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":135937,"journal":{"name":"[1990] Proceedings. 10th International Conference on Pattern Recognition","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-06-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129331978","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recursive application of the procedure yields a multiresolution hierarchy adapted to the content of the image. The hierarchy is similar to traditional image pyramids: its height is of log (image size) order, but by being adapted to the input, it eliminates the artifacts frequently present in the latter. The output obtained at the apex of the hierarchy can be used for fast image analysis. The technique was applied to connected component labeling (labeled images) and segmentation (gray-level images).<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":135937,"journal":{"name":"[1990] Proceedings. 10th International Conference on Pattern Recognition","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-06-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129972144","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The method is based on the fact that a single parameter space point can be determined uniquely with a pair, triple, or generally n-tuple of points from the original picture. Such n-tuples of points can be chosen randomly from the edge image, giving the method the name randomized Hough transform (RHT). The new algorithm reduces the computation time and memory use of the HT drastically. In the standard HT one must calculate one parameter curve in the parameter space for one pixel, whereas in the RHT only one parameter point has to be solved for one n-tuple of points, and the presence of a specific curve in the image is quickly revealed by the accumulation of a small number of parameter points.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":135937,"journal":{"name":"[1990] Proceedings. 10th International Conference on Pattern Recognition","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-06-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128934918","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The distinguishing feature of such text is that it is written cursively. This imposes an additional requirement of isolating each character or set of overlapping characters before recognition. The proposed system is composed of three interleaved phases. The segmentation phase attempts to produce an initial set of characters from the connected text according to a set of predefined rules. The output is then passed to a preliminary classification phase that attempts to label the unknown characters into one of ten possible classes according to a set of rules that acquire their parameter values through learning. The last phase contains a more elaborate set of rules that recognize characters within each class. This recognition phase is designed to allow errors during segmentation and/or classification to be rectified through an adaptive recognition technique. The system has been implemented and tested on several fonts with a recognition rate of 130 words/min and an error rate of less than 6%.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":135937,"journal":{"name":"[1990] Proceedings. 10th International Conference on Pattern Recognition","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-06-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129058505","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
