The pipeline target detection algorithm uses the temporal continuity of the smooth trajectories of moving targets and successfully detects and simultaneously tracks all the target trajectories by mapping them from the image sequence onto a single target frame. The pipeline method overcomes the constraint of a straight line trajectory that most other algorithms require for similar tasks. The algorithm is a complete parallel distributed processing type process, and therefore is highly time-efficient-ideal for real-time detection and tracking of arbitrary target trajectories in high-noise environments.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":135937,"journal":{"name":"[1990] Proceedings. 10th International Conference on Pattern Recognition","volume":"i 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-06-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131339212","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The strategies employed are route description from experience and route recognition by visual information. In the description phase, panoramic representation, a representation of scenes along a route, is proposed. It is obtained by scanning scenes sideways along the route, which provides rich information, such as a 2-D projection of scenes called panoramic view, a path-oriented 2-1/2-D sketch, and a path description. The continuous panoramic view is more efficient in processing than integrating discrete views into a complete route model. In the recognition phase, the robot matches the panoramic representation from incoming images with that memorized in the previous scan so that it can locate and orient itself in autonomous navigation. Since the panoramic view covers a wide field of view, one can achieve reliable matching using a coarse-to-fine method, starting from a very coarse level.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":135937,"journal":{"name":"[1990] Proceedings. 10th International Conference on Pattern Recognition","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-06-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116149580","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The skew angle is detected in two stages. In the first stage, connected regions in an image are extracted and some feature parameters are extracted for each region. In the second stage, the Hough transform is calculated for the parameters, and the angle which gives the minimum of the transform is estimated as the skew angle. In experiments using CCITT standard documents, a detection accuracy of less than 0.1 degrees is obtained for printed documents. When graphical elements are included in the documents in addition to printed characters, the accuracy deteriorates to 0.2 degrees .<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":135937,"journal":{"name":"[1990] Proceedings. 10th International Conference on Pattern Recognition","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-06-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115298932","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The starting point is a set of domain-independent linear image primitives which define a line graph. After the removal of artifacts the recognition of meaningful complex structures is accomplished in several steps with the aid of a growing amount of domain-specific knowledge. Further scene knowledge controls the deployment of the various operators to arrive at a consistent interpretation throughout the scene. The selection of the object-oriented programming paradigm proved to be very effective.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":135937,"journal":{"name":"[1990] Proceedings. 10th International Conference on Pattern Recognition","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-06-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131685542","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has been applied to an automatic routing algorithm for electronic CAD. The algorithm handles thousands of image planes. Each plane corresponds to the routing area of each net. Design rule check and path search are performed using image processing techniques for those planes. The architecture and programming model of the Connection Machine System are reviewed. Utilities for representing and manipulating sets of data, the primary representation outside of the image plane, are described using communications primitives, especially segmented scans. Several algorithms for matching and evidence accumulation, which are constructed from the utilities, are compared. The techniques emphasize the use of sorting and sparse representations of space in order to limit the combinatorial processing requirements of high-level vision.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":135937,"journal":{"name":"[1990] Proceedings. 10th International Conference on Pattern Recognition","volume":"285 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-06-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131816783","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is shown how networks with sparse connectivity among neurons can be simulated in O( square root n+e) time. where n is the number of neurons and e the number of interconnections in the network. One of the drawbacks of using a long sequence of images is that the noisy images taken from a longer distance result in larger errors in 3D reconstruction and, consequently, lead to a serious degradation in motion estimation. To overcome this drawback, the authors have derived a set of Kalman filter equations for motion estimation in the quaternion representation. The measurement equation is obtained by analyzing the effect of white Gaussian noise in 2D images on 3D positional errors, and incorporating the optimal 3D reconstruction under the consistency constraint. The state propagation equation is formulated by specifying the error between the true rotation and the nominal rotation in terms of the measurement noise in 2D images. Actual rotation parameters have been computed from the estimated quaternions by the iterated least-squares method. Simulation results indicate that the equations derived are accurate for 3D motion estimation.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":135937,"journal":{"name":"[1990] Proceedings. 10th International Conference on Pattern Recognition","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-06-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115353651","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is used for 3D shape classification. A 3D shape is described by a library of projected views in 2D. Contour points are approximated by piecewise linear segments, and the segment lengths are considered as contour features. The transform coefficients of contour features are invariant under shape translation and rotation, since a rotation in 2D produces a cyclic shift on the feature vector components. This approach makes it possible to compare shape boundaries without the need to generate an exhaustive search to align their feature vectors. The matching algorithm is tested on six classes of aircraft patterns under various resolutions. Computation of the transform involves additions and subtractions, and its complexity is of order n ln(n). The algorithm can easily be implemented in a parallel processor architecture.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":135937,"journal":{"name":"[1990] Proceedings. 10th International Conference on Pattern Recognition","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-06-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114535909","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

How a pyramid data structure can be combined with simulated annealing to speed up convergence in stereo matching is described. Using the invariant property of image intensity and modeling the disparity as a Markov random field (MRF), the pyramid structure is followed from high (coarse) level to low (fine) level to derive the maximum a posteriori estimates. Simulation results on both random dot diagrams and synthesized images show the promise of this multiresolution stereo approach.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":135937,"journal":{"name":"[1990] Proceedings. 10th International Conference on Pattern Recognition","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-06-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117078059","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
