The use of mind maps helps students to elaborate cognitive learning strategies like creating and organizing contents. To assess the quality of these mind maps, teachers need tools to understand students' choices and strategies when constructing their mind maps. We have defined in collaboration with teachers a set of indicators based on learners' interaction traces. Those indicators have been implemented and integrated in a dashboard dedicated to teachers. In this paper, we introduce a first version of the dashboard: its design, implementation, and the results of its evaluation conducted during interviews with real teachers.","PeriodicalId":134966,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 17th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132402420","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Virtual field trips (VFT) provide the possibility for students to participate in field trips from remote locations through live conferencing. In this study, we will examine whether drone-based virtual field trips can maintain the advantages of VFT and also address some of their shortcomings in order to become a viable alternative to real field trips. For the purpose of the study, participants in a course for Education for Sustainability of a Primary Education Department were randomly assigned in two groups. 26 students in the first group made a predetermined visit to a city while a second group of 15 students followed their route through the city by watching a live broadcasted video from a drone in the university lab. Students supported that the two approaches are of equivalent value with each one having its own advantages and problems. Students indicated that drone-based VFT offered an enjoyable and intriguing learning way and provided some advantages over the actual field trips, like the more detailed view in higher altitudes and a better overview of the field under examination, both important elements of fieldwork. Nevertheless, drone-base VFT do not offer adequate details of the field in the human-eye level and do not convey the non-visual and aural feelings of being in the place.","PeriodicalId":134966,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 17th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131233520","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Adaptive e-learning systems are typically well suited for real-world heterogeneous users, which exhibit different levels of motivation and knowledge. Furthermore, students learn best when they are in flow, i.e. when the level of difficulty is perfectly adjusted to their individual abilities. A personalized, adaptive, and intelligent learning environment can provide each student with this learning experience. In this paper, we present a large-scale evaluation of learning in flow within an adaptive and personalized system, the Adaptemy system. The paper presents the results of two studies: an objective study with 7,614 Irish secondary school students in math classes assessing their learning flow, and a subjective study with 80 students assessing their perceived learning experience. The results from the objective study show that 88% of the students worked within the flow channel. In the subjective study, 70% of students reported a perceived improvement in their math skills after the exercise studying with the adaptive and intelligent learning system.","PeriodicalId":134966,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 17th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT)","volume":"197 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133609617","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The various built-in sensors in these watches provide contextual information that can be directly incorporated into ubiquitous learning designs. This paper presents the design and implementation of a wearable assessment platform based on the Samsung Gear S2 Smart Watch. Implemented using the IoT MQTT protocol, this platform allows the system to automatically subscribe to and publish questions to students based on their current context. For example, students will get notified on their smartwatch with a question related to their location or situation derived from the smartwatch sensor data. The system uses the PONTE MQTT server and is integrated with Google's Classroom.","PeriodicalId":134966,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 17th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT)","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134608517","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Previous applications collecting real-time feedback from students through clickers and mobiles typically collect limited information with pre-defined questions, while more recent applications using social media collect such a large volume of information that a lecturer cannot manually process it in real time. We developed the SA-E system for analysing students' real-time feedback provided via social media, and, in this paper, we present the evaluation of this system in real settings with lecturers and students. The results show that lecturers are highly satisfied with the proposed system. In contrast, although the participation of students in providing feedback was high, the students' opinions of the system were between neutral and dislike.","PeriodicalId":134966,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 17th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT)","volume":"110 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134086239","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Forty-seven junior high school students were invited to participate in the learning experiment. The students were divided into two groups and played Fragrance Channel in two different modes. Pre-and post-tests were used to evaluate students' learning effectiveness under different conditions and an IMMS questionnaire was used to evaluate learning motivation. The results show no significant differences for both groups when evaluating learning effectiveness and motivation. However, both groups presented significant differences between their pre-and post-tests conditions when it comes to the acquired knowledge. We identified significant differences also for the satisfaction level showing that students enjoyed it more to play in the competitive mode.","PeriodicalId":134966,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 17th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT)","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122030704","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, they produce a huge volume of Learning Objects (LOs), often unstructured, which makes retrieving and presenting them a challenge, especially when presented in an individualized manner. In this work, we explore the concept of Adaptive Educational Hypermedia (AEH) together with ULEs for creating and providing personalized LOs to students. This research proposal aims at designing a component-based architecture capable of structuring automatically captured LOs in classrooms and their metadata through a collaborative approach, and offering content personalization features in ULEs, considering social and collaborative interactions, devices' contextual constraints, and personal preferences and traits. Such architecture is being integrated into a real multimedia capture platform currently used as a complementary tool by instructors of the Faculty of Computing at Federal University of Uberlândia, Brazil.","PeriodicalId":134966,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 17th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128922315","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ubiquitous learning (U-learning) provides to students the possibility to learn at anyplace and anytime within the collaborative environment using interactive multimedia system that enables effective communication among teacher and learners. The architecture of ubiquitous learning environment (ULE) still suffers from the problems of vulnerability. Blockchain (BC) technology recently explored to provide much more privacy and security using essentially peer-to-peer (P2P) networks has a significant role in the development of decentralized topologies. This paper expounds a novel BC-based architecture for ULE that preserves the benefits of security and privacy. The architecture offers new opportunities to design secured collaborative learning system. It provides data exchange with BC using trust methods within the decentralized topology. The evaluation of this implemented system demonstrates its efficiency while it delivers security and privacy for ULE.","PeriodicalId":134966,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 17th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133986689","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
