This research was carried out during the year 2021 for the measurement and quantification of several variables warrants availability of valid tools. In aquaculture sector, gender mainstreaming efforts has been undertaken by several stakeholders. However, measuring the level of empowerment as a consequence of interventions could not be done in absence of such tools. The article describes the process of development of Women Empowerment in Aquaculture Index (WEAI) - selection of domains, assessing content validity through expert rating, screening of the domains using ‘t’ value and assigning relative weights. The instrument, so developed, has 30 items under 6 domains (access to and control over resources and services, ability to decide independently, attitude towards aquaculture, control over use of income, knowledge on aquaculture, participation in social and economic activities). Using the index, comparison was made between three women SHGs from Odisha with level of empowerment varying between 69-80 per cent.","PeriodicalId":13471,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Extension Education","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85583934","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study was conducted in 2019-2020 in three fishing villages of Dal Lake Kashmir, where the livelihood and vulnerability of fisheries-based livelihoods were assessed through a composite index development approach. The fishers of Dal Lake are moderately vulnerable to climate variability and changes. The status of the livelihood capitals of the fishers reveals that most of the capitals are of moderate type, however, the financial capital is poor horizontally among all the fishing villages. It was also found that the socio economic conditions and resilience of the people are in very poor condition. The fisheries related activities and policies are being side-lined because of giving more importance to tourism. The management of the lake is shared between the Fisheries & Tourism departments, and the Jammu and Kashmir Lakes Conservation and Management Authority (power). However, lack of coordination, less availability of resources, less priority to the fisheries sector, and lack of accountability hindered the desired outcomes. Proper management of the lake, coordination between the key stakeholders and fishers is very important and can be achieved through network governance.","PeriodicalId":13471,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Extension Education","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86006073","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ninety-eight women belonging to 9 randomly chosen women self-help groups were studied using a structured interview schedule. Regression analysis indicated that 53.9 per cent variation in the women empowerment level was attributed to annual income, information source utilization, social participation, participation in extension activity, training, and innovativeness. The empowerment level of 9 SHGs varied from 61- 95 per cent, with considerable differences between the domains- access to and control over resources and services, participation in social and economic activities, ability to make independent decisions, control over income usage, knowledge on aquaculture, and attitude towards aquaculture. Non-availability of bigger size fingerlings, lack of financial support from Govt. organizations, and lack of knowledge regarding recommended practices were among the constraints that limit women’s participation in aquaculture.","PeriodicalId":13471,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Extension Education","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135957720","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Data from 474 farmers through personal interview method were collected. Agriculture was the primary occupation for most households followed by off-farm activities. Average per capita annual income (Rs. 1,00,073) was lower than the national average. The per capita annual income was Rs. 73,303, Rs. 93,256 and Rs. 1,44,456 for marginal, small, and medium farmers, respectively. About 47 per cent of the expenditure was made on consumption. A comparison of calorie intake to recommended calorie intake indicated that food insecurity was prevailing among 26 percent of the farmers. The major contribution to calorie intake was from cereals, the consumption of vegetables and fruits was low. A decision tree model using machine learning algorithms was used to identify the factors influencing food security. Per capita income, family size, consumption expenditure, social participation, and land holdings had significant importance in classifying the households as food secure and insecure. Diversifying farm activities and creating additional opportunities in rural areas, teaching households about balanced diets, promoting home gardening, and institutional policies to improve food security may be the strategic points.","PeriodicalId":13471,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Extension Education","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135959329","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study was conducted in 2022 to assess the superiors’ behaviour as perceived by a randomly selected 180 agriculture officers working in public sector banks in the state of West Bengal. Superiors’ behaviour was assessed based on the four domains; motivation, communication, coordination, and empathy which included 20 aspects on which responses of the selected agriculture officers were obtained on a 5-point continuum scale. Superiors’ behavioural characteristics were derived by mean perception score. Superiors’ motivating nature was found to be most admired by the respondents. Using ANOVA and post hoc tests, significant differences were identified between the groups of agriculture officers categorised based on the job experience in the banks with respect to various dimensions of superiors’ behaviour. Respondents with experience of >10 years perceived overall superiors’ behaviour lowly (68.49) as compared to the other two groups with experience of up to five years (75.86) and >5-10 years (75.27), respectively. Such differences based on experience need to be addressed to create a more cohesive and thriving work environment for the agriculture officers in the banking sector to provide better financial assistance to the farmers.","PeriodicalId":13471,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Extension Education","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135959330","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Dairy farmers’ responses were obtained through an interview using a well-structured interview schedule. Univariate Logistic regression models were used to analyze the potential predictors for the risky behaviours of respondents. Binary logistic analysis revealed that Wald statistics values were significant at a 1% level for the explanatory variables viz., education while occupation and herd size were found significant at a 5% level. Half of the respondents (52.50%) had a high perception towards brucellosis disease risk. About one-third of the respondents (28.33%) of the respondents were found in the category of moderate perceptual level. Pearson chi-square indicates that there were significant associations for health status variables such as landholding, annual income, herd size, and milk production with the perception of respondents. Poor understanding of brucellosis, the presence of manifold risky practices, and incorrect perception of respondents need an urgent policy for the prevention and control of brucellosis in farm animals.","PeriodicalId":13471,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Extension Education","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135959557","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study aimed to create a standard method of socioeconomic classification of the population for the developed scale with a scientific foundation that can be easily and simply applied to each sector or population stratum and is also useful for other variables of interest such as adoption, knowledge of farmers, etc. The socioeconomic status (SES) of the population in a nation is crucial since it is one of the key factors affecting a person’s health, education, mortality, morbidity, and nutritional status. The study was conducted in the year 2022-23 with 300 farmers from the state of Telangana. The number of classes was obtained by applying NbClust package in R software. The score range for the respective classes was calculated using Cumulative Square Root of Frequency (CSRF). The Nblust analysis suggested a 5-class cluster. The new five socio-economic classes include upper, upper middle, middle, upper lower, and lower class with scores of 25 and above, 21-24, 17-20, 13-16, and below 13 respectively.","PeriodicalId":13471,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Extension Education","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86528688","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study used a random sampling procedure and collected data through personal interviews with 60 respondents. Garrett’s ranking technique was employed to analyze the constraints as perceived by farmers. The findings revealed that medium and large landholding farmers availed the maximum limit of subsidy, and non-availability of spare parts in the local area, tedious procedures to obtain the benefit of PMKSY, and frequent equipment repairs were the major challenges hindering the performance of beneficiaries under PMKSY. Therefore, key stakeholders must take suitable steps to remove the identified constraints. It is imperative to address these challenges to improve the performance of farmers in Odisha.","PeriodicalId":13471,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Extension Education","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89907136","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Farmers need fast and accurate information on a variety of farming-related issues including weather, markets, pests and diseases, farming techniques, and agricultural inputs, to make informed decisions. Farmers’ information-seeking behaviour, however, differs based on several conditions. The proficiency in information-receiving behavior and its interpretation merit humongous importance for the triumph of entrepreneurial success far beyond subsistence farming. The study was conducted in the Nayagarh district of Odisha by selecting one hundred FPO member farmers following multistage and snowballing sampling techniques. A structured interview schedule was prepared and data were collected using the personal interview method. The study envisages that variables viz. age, crop yield, no. of male workers, marketed surplus, and materials possessed and training exposure have significant contributions to the functional contribution of information receiving behaviour of the farmers. The study suggests that improvement of farmers’ network and extension agent farmers’ relationship may be helpful for quick technology dissemination and overall improvement of the farming community.","PeriodicalId":13471,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Extension Education","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75385021","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
