To meet such demands, this paper presents the concept of virtual-environment-based instrument development technology, which is implemented by constructing the instrument in a virtual environment (VE) with appropriate hardware and software supports. This supplies a novel and effective method for the development of instruments, since the user can implore the instrument to be designed before it is made in a 3D virtual environment, and networked development can be easily implemented. Based on the author's previous works on virtual reality(VR), virtual instrument(VI), test and simulation technology, this paper systematically discusses the concept and models of virtual- environment-based instrument development technology, including its theoretical model and simulation model, and finally an example is given to show its initial effect. The conclusion is that virtual- environment-based instrument development technology can become practical and useful in instrument development.","PeriodicalId":133842,"journal":{"name":"16th International Conference on Artificial Reality and Telexistence--Workshops (ICAT'06)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-11-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131046109","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are two challenging issues for the application of snake models: how to select the initial contour of the object automatically and how to obtain good convergence result. This paper introduces an improved approach for snake model that integrates with GHough transformation and dynamic programming algorithm. In the paper GHough transformation is used to help selecting the initial contour without the interference manually, and the dynamic programming is used to improve the convergence precision. The experimental results shows that such approach can not only solve the problem of selecting initial contour automatically, but also get good convergence results.","PeriodicalId":133842,"journal":{"name":"16th International Conference on Artificial Reality and Telexistence--Workshops (ICAT'06)","volume":"230 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-11-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134043372","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For example, in the design of custom-made casting product, a designer whom lacking of casting knowledge may not be able to produce a good design. In order to obtain a good design and manufacturing result, it is necessary to equip the designer and manufacturer with a support system related to casting design or so called, knowledge transfer and creation system. In recent years, the design supporting system using VR technology is developed, and introduced in the manufacturing industry. The merit of using VR system is being able to carry out the stereoscopy of the product model drawn by 3D CAD, and to carry out the design review of the product model in the same size as thing. However, since many systems extend the display of the conventional 3D CAD, they cannot input annotation and so on directly in VR environment. In this paper, the system which can input and display the annotation in VR environment is developed. By drawing annotation to the product model displayed on VR environment, sharing of technical tacit knowledge and engineers' communication are promoted, and engineers becomes possible gaining physical tacit knowledge.","PeriodicalId":133842,"journal":{"name":"16th International Conference on Artificial Reality and Telexistence--Workshops (ICAT'06)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-11-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133342436","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The algorithm generates an omni-directional image by transforming each planar image to the spherical image. In this paper, vignetting and illumination compensation methods are proposed for realistic and seamless omni-directional video systems. We can synthesize any point of view from the stitched omnidirectional image on the spherical coordinates. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can effectively generate the omni-directional image and with real video sequences. Furthermore, the proposed omni-directional system with vignetting and illumination compensation is shown to be approximately 1-4 dB better than that which does not consider the said effects.","PeriodicalId":133842,"journal":{"name":"16th International Conference on Artificial Reality and Telexistence--Workshops (ICAT'06)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-11-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131360172","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to realize harmonious human machine interaction, this paper makes some useful efforts on formalizing rational and emotional agents for human machine interface basing on multi-agent technology. An improved model of concurrent game structure is given, mental states (belief, desire and intention) of agent are brought into new multi-agent cooperation logics, multi-subset semantics of individual intention are given and extended to give the semantics to group intentions. Understanding and representing of emotions are added to agent for human machine interface to improve the effective interaction between human and machine, formal representation of emotion are given. Four tough problems (logical omniscience problem, the side-effect problem of tautological implication, disjunction magnification problem and conjunction separation problem) are done away with. Several desired properties are attained finally.","PeriodicalId":133842,"journal":{"name":"16th International Conference on Artificial Reality and Telexistence--Workshops (ICAT'06)","volume":"157 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-11-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114092287","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This technique has also been used with digital display to create a mixed reality (MR) system, where dynamic virtual objects are presented together with the static diorama. The usual pepper's ghost setup does not allow the presentation of the virtual objects in different z location. This paper describes the development of a pepper's ghost MR system that is able to display the virtual objects in varying z locations. In this implementation, we used six layers of polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) as the projection screens. By adjusting the on/off status of the PDLC layer, we were able to present objects at different depths.","PeriodicalId":133842,"journal":{"name":"16th International Conference on Artificial Reality and Telexistence--Workshops (ICAT'06)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-11-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128641695","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A usual approach is to exhaustively search through the database comparing each database model with the query model. This approach is inefficient especially for a large database. In this paper, an efficient mechanism for 3D model retrieval is proposed. In the preprocessing stage, a set of reference models are selected from the database using cluster analysis, and distances between database models and reference models are computed and stored. Then in the query stage, for a certain query model, searching is accelerated by reducing the large amount of model comparisons using triangle inequality based on the reference distances computed before. The proposed retrieval mechanism is implemented and experiment result shows that retrieval efficiency is greatly improved than the usual approach without any precision loss","PeriodicalId":133842,"journal":{"name":"16th International Conference on Artificial Reality and Telexistence--Workshops (ICAT'06)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-11-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128081060","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
