With a much smaller initial investment, practically the same reliability can be obtained as with 100 percent solar solutions. The idea is to put to use all the available energy of the sun with fewer solar panels (curve 2 on Fig. l), which may be called \"Total Solar Energy System\". Of course, it is necessary to maintain within the limits of a reliable operation the minimum state of charge of the battery. In practice this can be achieved by the use of a battery charger (Diesel-group or other) and a control system. The results are shown in two different diagrams, which can be used to make the project of hybrid solar systems. The formulas permit us to calculate, for a given site and system, all operational characteristics such as: - state of charge of the battery at the end of each month - monthly number of operation and operating time of the charging group - economy in fuel compared to 100% Diesel system Practical data and results in Brazil have proved the theory. (The above idea was first presented to the Commission of Alternative Energy Sources of Telebras in February 1981. However, it has, in recent years, been one of the most neglected. At the same time, current economic pressures are further limiting the manpower available to monitor and maintairr this equipment. Operating companies may have numerous unmanned locations that are visited only once or twice a month and with only two or three remote alarms reserved for the power plant. With the advent of microprocessors and the ever declining costs of digital hardware, we now have the opportunity to add \"intelligence\" to these power plants at a justifiable expense. Alarms can be selectively annunciated rather than ganged; voltages and currents can be displayed in engineering units; rectifiers can be controlled for efficiency and reliability. All of this and more can be remotely supervised at any central location through either a \"dumb\" or \"intelligent\" terminal. The information can be displayed in any alphanumeric format familiar to the user. The intelligent system can be programmed to perform load studies, monitoring the duration of highs and lows and when they occur. It can be programmed to perform given control algorithms depending on the operating parameters of the power plant or of any equipment at the site. Examples of this could be rectifier switching, HVAC control or peak demand control to minimize utility expenses while maintaining the proper environment. This limits the effects of a power-unit failure and contributes to increased system reliability. An optional battery reserve system ensures uninterrupted power without an external uninterruptible power system. However, this does not mean that the battery can be left without service during the corresponding time. The battery needs supervision of cell voltages, densities, levels and temperatures much more often than water filling, which means that the long topping up intervals of modern batteries cannot be fully utilized. By combination of a low maintenance battery and a battery supervision system for cell voltages, current, battery temperature and electrolyte level, a minimum of maintenance and a maximum of availability is obtainable. Furthermore a more optimized service life of the battery will be possible by use of the battery supervision system. The performance of these transistorized UPS's has been further improved since they were described two years ago [1]. The inverter has been refined and simplified to the extent that the system now contains only one output transformer. The control circuitry now consists of a single circuit board. It provides the telecoms power engineer who is not himself an EMC specialist with an appraisal of EMC requirements as they concern him and others, both now and in the future. It will show the work that he can and must do himself and indicate where specialist help is likely to be required. In view of the many and varied existing interference requirements and the omission of telecommunications equipment coverage from most of them, a fresh approach is required, with the particular needs of the telecoms situation in mind. Emissions of interference are discussed and basic equipment requirements identified. Attention is also given to susceptibility, where again the basic requirements are identified. Discussed in this case study are problems resulting from operation of tele-communications equipment in remote areas where 220/380 volt utility power experienced swings of 100 volts, transients ranged to 2000 volts, noise levels exceeded 60 volts, and harmonic distortion was sometimes greater than 20%. The primary causes of these power problems were electrical utility systems with marginal capability to meet demand, due to continuing industrialization programs. Environmental conditions also were a factor. Ambient temperatures to 60° C, and brief but violent electrical storms also contributed to equipment failures. This combination of hostile environment and unstable power resulted in excessive earth station downtime; Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) was measured in days. After study of power conditions, and investigation of a variety of isolation devices, the project team decided on ferroresonance as the primary power conditioning technology. Custom transformers, based on an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) three-phase ferro were designed and installed. This approach reduced voltage swings to acceptable levels, provided the necessary transient suppression and produced distortion-free sine-wave power. These power conditioning systems have been operating satisfactorily for some seven years. This design proved to be the forerunner of one of today's most successful versions of power conditioning equipment. In a constant-current input converter, the output voltage rises as the transistor switching duty ratio is decreased and falls when the duty ratio is increased. Regulation is achieved by increasing the duty ratio when the output current decreases and decreasing the duty ratio when output current increases.
