The NAS batteries are supplied by NGK insulators, Ltd. in Japan. ABB, Inc. of New Berlin, Wisconsin supplied the power conversion system that integrates direct current (DC) from the NAS battery with the alternating current (AC) of the power grid. Other partners in the demonstration include the Tokyo electric power company (TEPCO), department of energy/Sandia national laboratories and EPRI. Testing was performed at ABB and supported by NGK and AEP's measurement and analysis team. Testing took one month to complete and used advanced measurement and recording equipment. In conclusion, the acceptance testing of the unit verified the functionality and grid compatibility of the system and the reliability of the protection mechanisms. The measured data were used to validate system performance and analyzed to recommend further improvements especially on the system dynamics, optimum usage of the energy stored in the batteries and reliability.","PeriodicalId":131986,"journal":{"name":"2003 IEEE Power Engineering Society General Meeting (IEEE Cat. Two matrices developed based on the topological structures of distribution systems are used to analyze the variations of bus voltages, bus current injections and branch currents under fault conditions. The proposed short circuit analysis method with exact three-phase models can then be developed from these two matrices and be exploited to solve the various types of single or simultaneous unsymmetrical faults. Since the proposed method does not use the traditional admittance matrix, the time-consuming procedures including matrix tri-factorization and/or matrix inverse are not necessary; therefore, the proposed method can achieve the advantages of high speed, robust convergence and accuracy. To analyze PQD deeply, this paper introduces a wavelet-based method for detecting, localizing, separating, quantifying and identifying slight AD and PD. The following are the distinctive features of the method: complex biorthogonal wavelet with the shortest smoothing filter (Haar filter), fast but shift-invariant wavelet transform (WT) at a few scales, automatically separated AD and PD in WT-domain, direct relationship between the WT coefficients and the magnitudes of AD and PD, simple binary feature victor and binary-decimal conversion identifying process. The system security is checked against short-circuit in main transmission buses near wind parks, generation outages and wind power fluctuations. In April of 1998, wholesale electricity in California was deregulated, and spot markets created in the power exchange (PX) and the Independent System Operator (ISO) included the day-ahead energy and ancillary service markets, the hour-ahead energy and ancillary service markets, and the real-time energy market. Sellers could bid their energy, four types of ancillary services, and incremental and decremental energy for congestion separately for each day-ahead and hour-ahead market sequentially, and then could bid their remaining energy to the ISO real-time energy market. At same time, the physical aspects of the electricity system and resource feasibilities were frequently ignored. The energy crisis in 2000 and 2001 demonstrated that this sequential and separable market structure was fundamentally flawed. In the light of the market failure in California and FERC standard market design, the California ISO started market redesign activities, including the development of its market design proposal, MD02, and an extensive stakeholders' process. The study of the current distortion originated from current transformer (CTs) saturation is one of the main aims of the work. The alternative transients program (ATP) has been chosen as the computational tool to simulate a power transformer under fault and energization situations. The radius basis function (RBF) neural network is proposed as an alternative approach in order to distinguish the situations described, using a smaller amount of data for the training purpose if compared with networks such as the multilayer perceptron (MLP). The MLP neural network with the backpropagation method is also implemented for comparison purposes. A wide range of architectures is evaluated and the work shows the best net configurations obtained. The ANN results are then compared to those obtained by the traditional differential protection algorithm. Such matrices are available in a public site for the users to have a preliminary estimation of the costs associated to the transmission services they want to set up, speeding up the process of formalizing a contract, which results in considerable savings of time and money for both, the users and CFE. The paper provides an overview of some conventional and new techniques. The apparent impedance of distance relays, phasor calculation and rotor angle estimation are several methods for detection of power swing, reviewed in this paper. A least square method for prediction of rotor angle is described. An algorithm for prediction of power swing based on the predicted rotor angle is studied. Results obtained from simulation studies are used to demonstrate the performance of these methods.
