The significance of generator design changes is assessed by comparing the critical fault types producing maximal circuit breaker current through each breaker in the original and modified networks. In the majority of cases the impact of even significant generator design changes on the nature of these \"critical fault types\" is restricted mainly to breakers in the immediate vicinity of the generator of interest. Finally, analytical expressions quantifying the influence of generator design on the current flows produced by faults through circuit breakers distributed network-wide are developed to clarify the results obtained from simulation.","PeriodicalId":131986,"journal":{"name":"2003 IEEE Power Engineering Society General Meeting (IEEE Cat. A real-time discrete wavelet analysis based fault detection and classification algorithm is proposed in this paper. The presented algorithm is principally based on the detection of fault generated transient signal. The fault type is identified by comparing various wavelet features of signals of all three phases. The simulation study is carried out using ATP-EMTP and MATLAB wavelet toolbox. The results show that the proposed algorithm is fast, effective and robust.","PeriodicalId":131986,"journal":{"name":"2003 IEEE Power Engineering Society General Meeting (IEEE Cat. Some measures are needed to solve this problem. Otherwise, benefits brought by deregulation will be incomplete. As an alternative to building new transmission lines, which is not preferred due to many factors, Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) was introduced to solve both the congestion problem G. Huang et al. (2002) and in turn reduce LMP S.C. Srivastava et al. (2000). However, a key issue is still missing, which is the pricing scheme for the utilization of FACTS devices and penalty for users to operate at their limits. Unless this issue is addressed, no proper incentives can be provided to market participants for new constructions. This paper proposes a pricing scheme for FACTS devices in congestion management, which addresses both the penalty and the utilization issues. Numerical examples are also used to demonstrate our ideas.","PeriodicalId":131986,"journal":{"name":"2003 IEEE Power Engineering Society General Meeting (IEEE Cat. In power system security analysis, characterization of certain contingencies using voltage stability and load curtailment is a cumbersome and time-consuming process. Bayes classifier provides assessment of system security without complicated contingency analysis and can reduce the computational burden. Security status of a given feature vector can be determined by maximum a posteriori probability rule based on Bayes rule. The case study of WSCC system is presented to demonstrate the efficiency of this approach.","PeriodicalId":131986,"journal":{"name":"2003 IEEE Power Engineering Society General Meeting (IEEE Cat. By directly taking the instantaneous multiphase voltage and multiphase current as two vectors with multicomponents each, the instantaneous reactive quantity is considered as the 2nd asymmetrical tensor resulting from the outer-product operation of voltage and current vectors. In this way, the so-called zero-phase sequence component problem is solved. With its concise and direct expression, the theory can be applied to any kind of 3-phase systems, and can also be easily extended to any n-phase systems without any additional transformation, in which the instantaneous quantities will have similar properties to those in a steady sinusoidal 3-phase system. So it may find wide application in many fields.","PeriodicalId":131986,"journal":{"name":"2003 IEEE Power Engineering Society General Meeting (IEEE Cat. This paper examines how the reliability of such a relay may be improved by considering the measured impedance at the relay location. The composite algorithm describes how the traveling wave information and line impedance measurement can be used in parallel in a single protection scheme to develop a high-speed, reliable distance relay. Such a scheme will be extremely useful for long EHV transmission lines where high speed fault clearance is essential. The effects of close-up faults, fault inception angle, and external faults on a three-phase 500 kV power system are examined using an electromagnetic transient program. A laboratory prototype of the relay has been developed using a high speed signal processor.","PeriodicalId":131986,"journal":{"name":"2003 IEEE Power Engineering Society General Meeting (IEEE Cat.
