Studying protein-protein interactions and how proteins form molecular complexes allows researchers to better understand their function in the cell. Currently, the most common methods used for docking are fully computational approaches, followed by the use of molecular visualization tools to evaluate results. However, these approaches are time consuming and provide a large number of potential solutions. Our basic hypothesis is that a virtual reality (VR) framework for molecular docking can combine the benefits of multimodal rendering, of the biologist's expertise in the field of docking, and of automated docking algorithms. We think this approach will increase efficiency in reaching the solution of a docking problem. However designing immersive and multimodal virtual environments (VE) based on VR technology calls for clear and early identification of user needs. To this end, we have analyzed the task of protein-protein docking as it is carried out today, in order to identify benefits and shortcomings of existing tools, and support the design of new interactive paradigms. Using these results, we have defined a new approach and designed a multimodal application for molecular docking in a virtual reality context.","PeriodicalId":131574,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE Symposium on 3D User Interfaces","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-03-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114559596","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We present the evolution of a 3D interface for a virtual Theremin, the VRemin. Based on a music synthesizer application we built a number of different 3D interfaces that allow for a contact-free play of the virtual music instrument based on gestures. The variants differ in the size of the interaction space, the use of unimanual and bimanual interaction techniques and the applied IO devices.","PeriodicalId":131574,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE Symposium on 3D User Interfaces","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-03-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128559572","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We describe a n.ew interaction technique called the \"roll-and-pinch menu\" (rapMenu), and investigate the design space of remote menu selection using freehand gestural input. The rapMenu maps intuitive hand postures and gestures to a radial menu layout at two levels of granularity: the user rolls her hand to alter the wrist orientation, which makes a group of menu items selectable; then she touches her thumb to a particular finger (forming & pinch gesture) to select a specific item in that group. We present the visual design and behavior of the rapMenu, consider related design issues, examine design variations, and discuss the strengths and limitations of our approach.","PeriodicalId":131574,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE Symposium on 3D User Interfaces","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-03-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116648304","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A new listener component for the Xj3D was created, which makes transparent to the user the integration between the 3D browser and the recognizer. The approach assumes the adoption of an independent speech recognizer, which them requires the VRML/X3D browser to be able to communicate with it. Our proposal is to hide, as much as possible, the speech implementation from the VRML/X3D programmer, keeping the additional programming to a minimum, and automating the process of updating the recognizer with successive new grammar descriptions. We believe this is a desirable feature for virtual reality system developers, and also to be used as a rapid prototyping tool when experimenting with speech technology.","PeriodicalId":131574,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE Symposium on 3D User Interfaces","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-03-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122042777","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper describes a new WIP interface that improves both latency and the continuity of synthesized locomotion in the virtual environment. By basing the virtual avatar motion on the speed of the user's heel motion while walking in place, we create a direct mapping from foot-motion to locomotion that is responsive, intuitive, and easy to implement. In this paper, we describe the technique, analyze its starting and stopping latency, and provide experimental results on the suppression of false steps and general usability of the system.","PeriodicalId":131574,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE Symposium on 3D User Interfaces","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-03-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124652468","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since past research has shown that a mouse with suitable mapping techniques can serve as a good input device for some 3D object movement tasks, we also evaluate which characteristics of the mouse sustain its success. Our first study evaluates the effect of a supporting surface across orientation of input device movement and display orientation. A 3D tracking device was used in all conditions for consistency. The results of this study are inconclusive; no significant differences were found between the factors examined. The results of a second study show that the mouse outperforms the tracker for speed in all instances. The presence of support also improved accuracy when tracker movement is limited to 2D operation. A 3DOF movement mode performed worst overall.","PeriodicalId":131574,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE Symposium on 3D User Interfaces","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-03-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124493366","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In collaborative augmented reality (AR), participants must be able to refer to the physical and virtual artifacts that surround them, as well as those that exist in remote workspaces. One of the most primitive referencing techniques that satisfy these requirements is a virtual pointer. In order to better understand its effectiveness in collaborative augmented reality, a two-part study was conducted that independently examines how individuals both give and interpret references using this technique, as well as factors that influence accuracy. A second study was conducted that explored the dynamics of group interaction and how virtual referencing techniques may support collaborative tasks. We present the results of these two studies in the context of designing support for demonstrative referencing in collaborative augmented reality spaces. Overall, we argue that when the probability of referential ambiguity is high, additional costs such as time, computational resources or alternative techniques will help reduce referential ambiguity.","PeriodicalId":131574,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE Symposium on 3D User Interfaces","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-03-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121930191","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The method is based on the distortion cancellation algorithm to project an image onto curved screen without distortion. The virtual object is represented as if it is located inside the screen. This system allows the user to handle the screen object directly, and gives the user a feel of motion parallax. This system gives the user the ease of perception of positional relationship between the surface of screen and the internal virtual object. For this novel interaction system, it is important that the user can see clearly not only images on the screen but also shape and curve of the screen itself. In this paper, we focused the effect that the texture of screen surface gives the depth cue. Visibility of screen surface was discussed and evaluated through experiments.","PeriodicalId":131574,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE Symposium on 3D User Interfaces","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-03-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115151125","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We propose a framework to support such interoperability. The framework provides ontologies of input devices and interaction techniques/tasks. We focus on interaction interoperability in virtual environments (VEs) where users have different software/hardware platforms. The main benefit is the ability to use ontologies to define tasks needed to be done in a VE without specifying how these tasks should be accomplished. Based on the user and application profiles, we can dynamically select input devices and assign interaction techniques to defined tasks.","PeriodicalId":131574,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE Symposium on 3D User Interfaces","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-03-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129793609","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is due to the fact that no standard interfaces and devices exist. Therefore, user interface elements and interaction techniques typically have to be implemented individually. In this paper we present our approach for supporting the development of mixed reality applications and interaction techniques using the concept of interactive bits. We developed this via a component-based approach allowing for modeling interaction techniques, object behaviors, virtual devices through to entire MR applications. We show how this process can be significantly enhanced by using a visual programming environment. Finally we present a set of typical examples demonstrating the potential of the approach.","PeriodicalId":131574,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE Symposium on 3D User Interfaces","volume":"24 18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-03-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133433365","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
