Specifically, voltage variations have upset PLCs, locked computer based controls, caused UPS to frequently transfer to battery, and in general, interrupted the process control for the tin mill operations. The nature of the voltage variations were quantified by monitoring the electrical distribution system supplying the tin mill at key 6900 V and 575 V locations. The measurements identified substations with significant total harmonic voltage distortion, and were used to develop an accurate model of load flow and harmonics. Both load flow and harmonic analytical studies were performed to investigate alternatives to minimize the voltage issues. Recommendations are given including 1) optimum transformer tap settings for each 575 V substation, 2) optimum location for harmonic filters to limit voltage distortion within IEEE standards, and 3) specification for the filters to reduce the loading of transformers to within equipment ratings. Finally, the impact of future plans to replace additional M-G sets with rectifiers is discussed.","PeriodicalId":131410,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the 2004 IEEE Industry Applications Conference, 2004. 39th IAS Annual Meeting.","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121551400","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The findings suggest that power line carrier based AMR technologies do not create a transient voltage with enough amplitude to increase the level of concern at animal contact points as compared to the 50 or 60Hz background voltage at a given location. To determine the level of impact, the authors developed accurate power system models that allow for simulation and analysis of stray voltages and currents under just about any type of utility, farm, or grounding. Laboratory testing, and field measurement data, were used to verify the accuracy of the models, and animal testing was conducted to define the threshold of sensitivity of dairy cows to the power line carrier based AMR communication signals in the cow contact area. The unique computer models and dynamic simulations provided an efficient way to understand how different electrical parameters impacts the creation of stray currents and potentials at a point of interest during normal utility load conditions (steady-state) as well as under transient voltage levels.","PeriodicalId":131410,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the 2004 IEEE Industry Applications Conference, 2004. 39th IAS Annual Meeting.","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116716882","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed method can not only possess the superiority of a linear controller over the conventional hysteresis-type current controller but it also enables the current to be regulated without a steady state error. The key idea is that all the harmonics of the current and voltage, which can contribute to the torque positively, can be equivalently represented as dc components. Through out this paper, a five-phase synchronous motor is used as a practical example and the basic concepts can be easily extended into an n-phase ac motor. Experimental results prove the validity of the proposed method.","PeriodicalId":131410,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the 2004 IEEE Industry Applications Conference, 2004. 39th IAS Annual Meeting.","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125624129","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This tends to limit plasma processing applications to high value workpieces as a result of the high capital cost of vacuum systems and the production constraints of batch processing. It has long been recognized that glow discharges would play a much larger industrial role if they could be generated at one atmosphere, and in ambient air. The one atmosphere uniform glow discharge plasma (OAUGDP) has these capabilities. The OAUGDP is a nonthermal, 'cold' RF glow discharge plasma that operates on displacement currents and has the time-resolved characteristics of a classical low pressure DC normal glow discharge. Exploratory tests have been conducted on a variety of prospective industrial applications of the OAUGDP, all at one atmosphere using air as the working gas. These applications include subsonic plasma aerodynamic effects, including flow acceleration and flow re-attachment and the electrohydrodynamic (EDH) flow control of neutral working gas; increasing the surface energy and wettability of fabrics, films, and solid surfaces; sterilizing medical equipment and air filters; stripping of photoresist and directional etching of possible microelectronic relevance and plasma deposition.","PeriodicalId":131410,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the 2004 IEEE Industry Applications Conference, 2004. 39th IAS Annual Meeting.","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122514447","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
