Thus, composite roughness levels should be low to make retention of dental biofilm. Alterations of the surface of composite resin restorations can be associated to drinks and acidic foods, components of saliva, finishing and polishing methods, as well as the action of bleaching agents, rinses and fluoride. Purpose: To evaluate the effect of mouth rinses in superficial roughness of composite resin through a quantitative evaluation. Methods: 48 specimens with composite resin Filtek TM Z350 XT were made and divided into 4 groups (n=12): distilled water, Colgate ® Plax, Oral B ® and Listerine ® . Specimens were made using a rectangular matrix with holes, each measuring 0.8 cm of internal diameter and 0.2 cm in thickness. The specimens were immersed in 50 ml of each substance, for 12 hours, to simulate a year of daily use of the solution for 2 minutes. Then specimens were stored in distilled water until reading of the roughness tester. Data were statistically treated by ANOVA and Tukey tests, with a significance level of 95%. Results: No statistically significant difference was observed between the control group and Listerine ® (p = 0.03). When comparing the average roughness of different brands of mouthwashes, there was no statistically significant difference (p > 0.05). OBJECTIVE : the aim of this study was to assess the level of knowledge of parents/guardians about the presence of dental caries in their children and additionally evaluate the association between the perception with caries diagnosis obtained by clinical examination. METHODS : a cross-sectional study, pilot type, was conducted with a sample of 38 children aged between 3 and 12 years attended in the School of Dentistry, Department of Pediatric Dentistry, in the southern state of Ceara, Brazil. Through the questionnaire were collected informations about the perceptions of parents/guardians for presence of caries in children as well as sociodemographic characteristics of the family. The diagnosis of caries was evaluated through clinical examination performed by two examiners previously trained and calibrated in ICDAS-II and PUFA contents. The analyses of frequency distribution were performed.In addition, Chi-square test, Fisher’s exact test, Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and Pearson correlation were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS : the prevalence of dental caries was 78.9%. There was a statistically significant association between the presence of caries assessed by ICDAS-II index and low perception of dental caries reported by parents / guardians (p=0.025). However, there was strong correlation between “number of teeth in children cavitation” and “number of teeth with caries reported by parents” (r=0.605). CONCLUSION : The prevalence of dental caries was high and parents/persons responsible tended to not recognize initial stages of the disease. Na tecnica de osteotomia sagital do ramo mandibular (OSRM) o corte horizontal e feito na face medial do ramo imediatamente acima da lingula. OBJETIVO: O proposito desse estudo foi verifi car a existencia de correlacao da altura e largura do ramo em relacao ao genero e indice cefalico. MATERIAL E METODO: Foram utilizadas 48 mandibulas humanas dentadas de adultos do tipo dolico (16), meso (16) e braquicefalico (16). Os pontos pre determinados utilizados como referencias anatomicas no ramo para mensuracoes foram: (I) ponto mais inferior da incisura mandibular, (B) ponto mais alto da margem inferior, (A) ponto mais posterior da margem anterior (A) e (P) ponto mais anterior da margem posterior. RESULTADOS: A media da altura e largura do ramo mandibular nao apresentou diferenca na comparacao entre os indices cefalicos (dolico - 47,05 / 32,09mm; meso - 47,27 / 32,57mm; braquicefalico - 46,41 / 29,58mm). Na comparacao das dimensoes com o genero, a diferenca encontrada foi a altura do ramo no sexo masculino (49,08mm), maior do que no feminino (42,76mm). This condition is considered an embarrassing symptom with a significant social impact for the individual. The aim of this study was to evaluate the knowledge of professionals working on public health service about halitosis and to examine the criteria for referrals of suspected cases. This study had the participation of 37 health professionals including medical doctors and dentists. All participants answered a questionnaire about the etiology, management and treatment of halitosis. Among all the professionals analyzed 92% (n = 34) reported receiving patients complaining of halitosis. 88% (n = 22) of dentists and 50% (n = 06) of medical doctors believe that the main cause of halitosis has an oral origin. 89.1% (n = 33) of samples reported performing the treatment of halitosis. In addition, the complementary exam most requested for the diagnosis of halitosis was the radiograph of the face. The results suggest that there is a mistake in the management of patients with halitosis attended in the public health service. MATERIAL AND METHOD : A cross-sectional study with 320 students in the ages of 5, 12 and 15 to 19 years with 62, 112 and 146 students, respectively was conducted. The confidence level was 95%, with a 5% margin of error and the sample wasn’t randomly selected. The dmft and DMFT indices for decayed, missing and filled teeth, the Simplified Oral Hygiene Index (SOHI), and Community Periodontal Index (CPI) to assess bleeding gingival and teeth calculus were employed. A descriptive and inferential analysis of the data with Chi-square test (α=0.05) was conducted. RESULTS : The dmft was 3.69+4.71 at 5 years and 42% hadn’t caries experience. The DMFT was obtained, respectively, 2.44+2.60 and 3.73+3.28 at 12 and 15 to 19 years, with 20.6% and 17.1% without caries experience. The median of SOHI was 1.16±0.51 and there wasn’t difference in relation to caries (p>0.05). It was found that 90.1% of students with gum bleeding and 85.7% with teeth calculus had DMFT>1 (p<0.05). CONCLUSION : The caries prevalence was considered high at 5 years, low to 12 and mean at 15 to 19 years. Oral hygiene was classified as regular, being more deficient in children of 5 years. There was association (p<0.05) between decay and gum bleeding conditions (OR=3.117, CI=1.332-7.296) and dental calculus (OR=1.983, CI=1.027-3.829).
