Our system converted prescribed exercises (sit-to-stand) into engaging active gameplay using AR mobile technology and a proprietary designed tangible interface. Neurophysiotherapists and stroke patients tested the game's usability and the engagement strategies. We suggest that exergames facilitated by the Internet of Things (IoT) can help facilitate engagement in stroke rehabilitation therapies by incorporating meaningful play, progression and be designed under a stroke-patient friendly approach. In particular, AR can increase meaningful play by incorporating the patient's home environment, health benefit beliefs and personal preferences into the virtual gameplay. AR can facilitate and track progression as the patient recovers and improves in the game. Designing for stroke-patient friendly systems needs to consider the individual patient's physical and cognitive impairments and produce an individualised experience.","PeriodicalId":129822,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on the Internet of Things","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121244079","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Poor environmental conditions lead to lower productivity and can have negative impacts on health and wellbeing. Personalizing the environment based on user preferences could not only improve health and well-being but also the user satisfaction and productivity. Furthermore, office workers spend most of their working hours in sedentary activities. The use of sit-stand desks has been linked to the reduction of prolonged sitting time resulting in health benefits. By leveraging recent advances in IoT, we monitor the environment around the occupant and utilize different machine learning algorithms to learn their indoor environment related preferences. In this paper, we describe our vision and ongoing work of creating a smart IoT desk that can personalize the environment around the occupant and can act as a support system to drive their behavior towards better environmental settings and improve posture and ergonomics.","PeriodicalId":129822,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on the Internet of Things","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129009308","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Machine learning is widely exploited to identify the activities from sensor measurements, however, they are often overcomplex to run on less-powerful IoT devices. In this paper, we present an alternative approach to efficiently support the activity recognition tasks using brain-inspired hyperdimensional (HD) computing. We show how the HD computing method can be applied to the recognition problem in IoT systems while improving the accuracy and efficiency. In our evaluation conducted for three practical datasets, the proposed design achieves the speedup of the model training by up to 486x as compared to the state-of-the-art neural network training. In addition, our design improves the performance of the HD-based inference procedure by 7x on a low-power ARM processor.","PeriodicalId":129822,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on the Internet of Things","volume":"438 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132894837","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the vast majority of web services consume and expose non-RDF data, and it is unlikely that all these services be converted to RDF one day. This is especially true for sensors and other devices in the Web of Things, as most RDF formats are verbose while constrained devices prefer to consume and expose data in concise formats. In this paper, we propose an approach to make these services and things reach semantic interoperability, while letting them the freedom to use their preferred formats. Our approach is rooted in the Web's architectural principles and the linked data principles, and relies on the definition of RDF presentations, which describe the link between RDF graphs and their representations. We introduce the RDF Presentation ontology (RDFP) that can be used to model inputs and outputs of procedures of the new Semantic Sensor Network ontology (SOSA/SSN), and input-Data and output Data of interaction patterns of things in the W3C WoT Thing Description ontology. We then propose practical solutions for web agents to be able to discover how a message content can be interpreted as RDF, generated from RDF, or validated, with different Web interaction protocols.","PeriodicalId":129822,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on the Internet of Things","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128909022","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Consequently, new lightweight network protocols are also being developed to connect resource-constrained devices or networks with each other. One of these protocols is the Constrained Application Protocol, which provides a REST architecture to resource and network-constrained devices. Besides the RESTful client-server paradigm, CoAP supports a publish-subscribe model thanks to its Observe extension which mimics some of MQTT's functionalities. However, this extension has some limitations in the subscription mechanism. Hence, this paper proposes several enhancements that define new CoAP options and response codes for such mechanisms. Furthermore, a theoretical comparison of the current CoAP capabilities against the new possibilities is also provided. For that, an specific use case is proposed, and a comparison in terms of the overhead required to exchange payloads and to subscribe to state change notifications on resources.","PeriodicalId":129822,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on the Internet of Things","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115874767","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It provides standards for communication and interaction with Things in the IoT in order to address IoT cross-domain and cross-platform interoperability problems and reduce its fragmentation. WoT uses a formal interface description called Thing Description (TD) which describes the offerings of Things to allow the interaction in between Things. Although Things undergo changes with regard to their physical and/or software components and specifications during their lifetime, the WoT TD is currently inteded to be of a static nature. This remains contradictory with the dynamic evolution of Things along their lifecycle. This work researches the lifecycle aspect for Things in the IoT and the different stakeholders influencing Things and respectively their TD. These two concepts were combined to develop a versioning mechanism for a TD through the lifecycle of a Thing.","PeriodicalId":129822,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on the Internet of Things","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116451575","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unfortunately, the resulting insights about the current air quality need to be actively queried by the citizens, leading to situations in which the citizen is exposed to a high air pollution without being aware of it. In this article, we introduce a context-aware air pollution monitoring and alert service that proactively notifies citizens via mobile devices about highly relevant air quality information once they enter an area with an air pollution that exceeds a user-defined threshold. The service continuously determines the concentration of particulate matter throughout a given urban area, detects closed areas with a high air pollution and shares this information with the citizen's mobile devices which are in turn responsible to regularly compare a citizen's position against the areas of poor air quality. As a proof of concept, we prototypically implemented and evaluated the service by means of real world measurements taken on consecutive days within an urban area in New Zealand.","PeriodicalId":129822,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on the Internet of Things","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129554531","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, our survey of research work has shown that the goal of providing an intelligent processing and analysis engine for IoT has still not been fully achieved. Central to this problem is the requirement for a semantic spatio-temporal query processing engine that is able to not only analyze spatio-temporal correlations in a massive amount of IoT data, but that can also generate an effective query plan for a given query to execute in a timely manner. Needless to say, query planning for the multidimensional data like IoT is a costly operation. The most known techniques are either based on the cost model or by using spatio-temporal data statistics and heuristics. In this paper, we propose an alternative solution that uses query similarity identification in conjunction with machine learning techniques to recommend a previously generated query plan to the optimizer for a given query. Our approach also aims to predict the query execution time for the purposes of workload management and capacity planning. Our extensive experiments indicate the efficiency of our learning approach with an impressive prediction accuracy on test queries.","PeriodicalId":129822,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on the Internet of Things","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125683519","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper identifies a range of technologies, especially printed electronics and near-field communication, available to brands to design digital capabilities that enhance retail consumers' engagement and experience. In this paper, the packaging is considered as an essential communication tool to enable business development and link brands with their consumers throughout the packaging. Plus, this paper proposes that the technology change and consumer behavior affect the firm's business logic, thus new digital capabilities define new BMs that result in novel value creation and delivery.","PeriodicalId":129822,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on the Internet of Things","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116598383","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This shift provides operators with a high level of reliability and efficiency when dealing with highly dynamic distribution grids. Technically, this implies that the support for a bidirectional flow of data is critical to realizing smart grid operation, culminating in the demand for equipping grid entities (such as sensors) with communication and processing capabilities. Unfortunately, the retrofitting of brown-field electric substations in distribution grids with these capabilities is not straightforward - this scenario requires a solution that provides \"industry-grade\" Internet of Things capabilities at \"consumer-grade\" prices (e.g., off-the-shelf communication standards and hardware). In this paper, we discuss the particular challenge of precisely time-synchronized wireless data collection in secondary substations that at the same time supports on-site configuration by authorized maintenance personnel through a mobile application: to achieve this, we propose a combined implementation of IPv6 over Bluetooth Low Energy.","PeriodicalId":129822,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on the Internet of Things","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133182636","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
