The phytochemical screening revealed the presence of phenolic, flavonoid and carbohydrate in methanol and 50% aqueous methanol extracts of S. ovalifolia. The antibacterial susceptibility was studied against E. coli and S. aureus. Among all the tested extracts, ethyl acetate extract showed good antibacterial activity against both bacteria. In the methanol and 50%, aqueous methanol extracts of S. ovalifolia, total phenolic, total flavonoid and total carbohydrate content were estimated, and free radical scavenging activity was determined. Total phenolic content was measured spectrophotometrically by using FolinCiocalteu reagent, total flavonoid content by using aluminium chloride and total carbohydrate content by using the anthrone method. Gallic acid was used as the standard for the calibration of phenolics, catechin for flavonoids and glucose for carbohydrates. The highest amount of phenolic and flavonoid were found in methanol extract (192.152±0.009 mg GAE/g extract and 78.188±2.719 mg CE/g extract), respectively. The highest amount of sugar was found in 50% methanol extract (190.585±2.445 mg GE/g extract). Methanol extract also showed good antioxidant activity (IC50 value 49.989 μg/ml) than 50% aqueous methanol extract (IC50 72.021 μg/ml). The GC-MS analysis of hexane extract of S. ovalifolia allowed the identification of 16 phyto-constituents based on retention time and the fragmentation pattern in the mass spectrum.","PeriodicalId":129302,"journal":{"name":"Nepal Journal of Science and Technology","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114305124","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study was conducted in 20 deep groundwater (>200 m) samples of Kathmandu valley to assess the arsenic content of different groundwater zones and to determine the relationship of arsenic with physicochemical parameters. Samples were collected in the post-monsoon season of 2016. The random sampling method was applied for the collection of water samples. Standard methods as APHA 2005 was followed for the analysis of the water sample. Arsenic concentration showed spatial variation. The maximum concentration of arsenic was found in Central Groundwater Zone at Patan (27040’07.3” and 85019’14”). Karl Pearson’s correlation coefficient revealed that moderate positive correlation of arsenic concentration with electrical conductivity (μS/cm) (r = 0.58 and p =0.01) and turbidity (NTU) (r = 0.67 and p = 0.01). Altogether eighteen hapas made of heavy-duty nylon net (1.5m3) were kept and placed inside the pond, distributed linearly, and then 270 fingerlings (@15 fishes/ hapa) were kept distributed randomly. Six practical diets like T1 (0.0 g kg-1), T2 (0.1 g kg-1), T3 (0.2 g kg-1), T4 (0.4 g kg-1), T5 (0.8 g kg-1) and T6 (1.6 g kg-1) were prepared. Feed containing 40% protein was supplemented with the ethanol extract of lapsi fruits. At the end of 90 days of the feeding trial, a significant difference (P< 0.05) in blood parameters were observed between the treated and control dietfed groups. Hemoglobin (Hb), white blood cells (WBCs), red blood cells (RBCs), packed cell volume (PCV), and other erythrocyte indices were recorded higher in the treated groups. RBC, WBC, Hct, and Hb were found significantly higher in the T4 (0.4 %) diet-fed group. The study showed a minimum of 0.4 % (0.4g kg-1) lapsi fruit extract needed in fish feeds to increase blood parameters to enhance growth and immunity.","PeriodicalId":129302,"journal":{"name":"Nepal Journal of Science and Technology","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117070477","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study focuses on evaluating the response reduction factor for masonry buildings with different mechanical properties, which are used in modern codes to scale down the elastic response of the structure. Using a similar frame-approach, a nonlinear static pushover analysis is carried out on the analytical models of masonry building in finite element analysis software SAP 2000v 20.0.0. The response reduction factor components, flexibility, and overstrength were computed from the results obtained from the nonlinear static pushover analysis. Finally, the response reduction factor is evaluated for different masonry buildings.It is concluded that the R-value given in IS: 1893-2016 for unreinforced masonry is not recommended for random rubble stone masonry buildings in mud mortar.","PeriodicalId":129302,"journal":{"name":"Nepal Journal of Science and Technology","volume":"246 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127537447","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An infection is caused when germs enter wounds. This study was designed to isolate and identify the causative agents of wound infections and their antibiotic susceptibility pattern. A total of 339 samples were collected from January to June 2016 from Kathmandu Model Hospital, Kathmandu. Samples were inoculated on the Blood Agar and MacConkey agar plates were incubated at 37 °C for 24 hours. After incubation, all isolates were identified by using gram stain and biochemical methods. Antibiotic susceptibility tests were performed on Mueller Hinton agar plate by Kirby Bauer Disk Diffusion Technique. During the study period, altogether, 339 specimens were collected and processed as per the standard microbiological protocol. The overall prevalence of wound infection was 56.9%. Among 244 bacterial isolates, Escherichiacoli (24.2%) was most predominant bacteria followed by Staphylococcus aureus (19.7%), Coagulase-negative Staphylococcus (17.6%), Klebsiella pneumoniae (10.7%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (8.6%), Acinetobacter spp (5.7%), Citrobacter freundii (4.9%) Proteus mirabilis (3.3%), Streptococcus viridans (2.0%), Klebsiella oxytoca (0.8%), Proteus vulgaris (0.4%), Serratia marcescens (0.4%), Enterobacter aerogens (1.2%), Enterobacter faecalis (0.4%). The most effective drug for Gram-negative bacteria and Gram-positive bacteria were amikacin and chloramphenicol, respectively. A total of Gram-negative bacteria, 77.55% were multidrug-resistant. The total Gram-negative bacteria most ESBL producers were E. coli (82.9%). We found S. aureus 33.3% of isolates were resistant to cefoxitin which indicates the increasing rate of Methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) in wound infection.","PeriodicalId":129302,"journal":{"name":"Nepal Journal of Science and Technology","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114816349","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is transmitted to humans by the bite of female Aedes mosquitoes. The disease has become a significant public health concern in recent years. Dengue viruses have expanded their geographic range through the movement of infected humans. In the present work, a two-patch epidemic model is proposed to describe the transmission dynamics of dengue disease in patches with the mobility of humans. Different travel rates of humans are considered to study the dynamics of the disease. Different patches are considered to have different disease prevalence. Basic reproduction number of the model is calculated, and some threshold conditions are established to study local stability of the equilibrium points. The travel of humans can help the dengue disease to increase its prevalence and sometimes the travel can be helpful in controlling the spread of the disease. Present work demonstrates that proper control in travel rates is helpful in reducing the spread and dominancy of the disease.","PeriodicalId":129302,"journal":{"name":"Nepal Journal of Science and Technology","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127249028","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Given the effects that radiation exposure can lead to, there is a clear need to have a system that affords appropriate levels of radiation protection in a situation where radiation is being used (Aschan 1999). For artificial sources of radiation, the medical sector is dominating the global occupational collective dose (Bhatt and Kulkarni 2013). Monitoring individual radiation workers is an essential and regulatory requirement for the surveillance of radiation workers in diagnostic and interventional radiology, nuclear medicine, and radiation therapy. It allows the individual to get acquainted with whether the possible absorbed dose they are receiving is within the limit as set by ICRP recommendations or not and whether protective ambiance could render safe and practicable services to patients (Gautam and Prashain 2011).","PeriodicalId":129302,"journal":{"name":"Nepal Journal of Science and Technology","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125334886","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
