Such activities help students understand the nature of the problems that various concepts and procedures were designed to solve, and hence enable them to understand the functional significance of new information. This study presented gifted 4th grade students with “real life” problem‐solving content, via videodisc technology, and then asked them to make valid suggestions about how to solve problems posed. Results illustrated that when children are instructed in problem‐solving strategies and then presented story information, they are more successful in solving posed problems than children who did not receive training.","PeriodicalId":129014,"journal":{"name":"Young Gifted Children","volume":"207 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114164767","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In 1900, eminent psychologist, G. Stanley Hall and his colleagues surveyed childrens’ collections in selected schools in California. Recently, the author and her graduate students embarked on a similar investigation of present‐day childrens’ collections. Results indicate that nine and ten continue to be the ages when children make the largest number of collections. Also, fewer items are collected today that relate to nature. Results are discussed in relation to curriculum for the gifted.","PeriodicalId":129014,"journal":{"name":"Young Gifted Children","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127530178","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The lower socio‐economic groups represent the greatest areas of wasted talent. Due to the stigma of poverty, the economically disadvantaged child is under represented in gifted and talented programs. Children reared in poverty not only face a challenge when entering the educational system but create a challenge for educators as well. The economically disadvantaged student can no longer be ignored or dismissed as uneducable. Social workers can bring to the educational system the means through which to intervene in society's subculture of the economically disadvantaged. They can serve as catalysts in bridging the gap between the educational system, the community and individual families. Educators should call upon the social workers to work in concert to address the problems of identifying and educating the economically disadvantaged gifted and talented child.","PeriodicalId":129014,"journal":{"name":"Young Gifted Children","volume":"378 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115185248","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
