As one of such architectures, hardware solvers for satisfiability (SAT) problems are getting more attentions these days because combinatorial optimization problems residing in many types of Internet-of-Things (IoT) and embedded systems applications can be transformed to SAT problems. In this paper, we present a novel, fast FPGA-based SAT solver with fine-grained parallelism. We particularly focus on a recently-developed SAT algorithm, AmoebaSAT, which abstracts shape-changing dynamics of an amoeba. Our hardware AmoebaSAT solver can enjoy high parallelism in quickly searching a solution (i.e., a satisfiable combination of variables assignment) for a given SAT instance, with a help of stochastic features to avoid local search. Our evaluations demonstrated that our work can outperform state-of-the-art on WalkSAT, another SAT algorithm which has been popular and widely-used for decades.","PeriodicalId":128327,"journal":{"name":"20th International Symposium on Quality Electronic Design (ISQED)","volume":"402 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123382557","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Long processing time is the main limitation of these methods when a deterministic zero error rate output is expected. For instance, when multiplying two n-bit precision input values, a processing time of $2^{2n}$ cycles is required. This long processing time makes the current deterministic approaches of SC inefficient for many applications. In this work, we propose an acceleration method based on resolution splitting to mitigate this long latency. The result is an exponential reduction in the processing time at the cost of some increase in the hardware area. The exponential reduction in the processing time results in a significant reduction in energy consumption. Synthesis results show that for the common 2-input multiplier, the proposed design decreases the energy consumption more than $pmb{2000}times$ compared to the prior state-of-the-art deterministic bit-stream-based design.","PeriodicalId":128327,"journal":{"name":"20th International Symposium on Quality Electronic Design (ISQED)","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132111995","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To achieve better performance, we evaluate different inner spacer lengths while tuning source/drain doping profile to keep off-state leakage current unchanged. Considering the fabrication uniformity, the key of the conceptual process flow is to etch inner spacers selectively from top to bottom channel. Driven by the growth towards green computing, it is imperative to design architectures that can provide maximum power savings while incurring minimal overhead on real estate and performance. Towards this we propose a state-preserving mechanism for dynamically configuring DRAM banks based on utilization. We propose a novel mechanism via which it is possible to dynamically power down and power on banks while taking the bank utilization and overall performance into account. Over extensive experimentation using memory intensive applications, we can observe a power savings of up to 12.31% while incurring an average performance loss of 0.82% over baseline executions.","PeriodicalId":128327,"journal":{"name":"20th International Symposium on Quality Electronic Design (ISQED)","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131551793","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To facilitate our study, we handcraft 87 standard cells, each of which has two layouts of the same area, one designed with single-row height and the other designed with double-row height. Experimental results show that the compromise made by placement, later turned into routability degradation, for handling double-row height cells reaches its peak when a circuit has about 30% of the cells being double-row height cells if placement is done with a core utilization of 90%. It is about 40% if a core utilization of 80% is employed.","PeriodicalId":128327,"journal":{"name":"20th International Symposium on Quality Electronic Design (ISQED)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131523044","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Processing-in-Memory (PIM) is a promising solution to address this bandwidth bottleneck by performing a portion of computation inside the memory. Many prior studies have enabled various PIM operations on nonvolatile memory (NVM) by modifying sense amplifiers (SA). They exploit a single sense amplifier to handle multiple bitlines with a multiplexer (MUX) since a single SA circuit takes much larger area than an NVM 1-bit cell. This limits potential parallelism that the PIM techniques can ideally achieve. In this paper, we propose MAPIM, mat parallelism for high-performance processing in non-volatile memory architecture. Our design carries out multiple bit-lines (BLs) requests under a MUX in parallel with two novel design components, multi-column/row latch (MCRL) and shared SA routing (SSR). The MCRL allows the address decoder to activate multiple addresses in both column and row directions by buffering the consecutively-requested addresses. The activated bits are simultaneously sensed by the multiple SAs across a MUX based on the SSR technique. The experimental results show that MAPIM is up to $pmb{339}times$ faster and $pmb{ 221}times$ more energy efficient than a GPGPU. As compared to the state-of-the-art PIM designs, our design is $pmb{16}times$ faster and $pmb{ 1.8}times$ more energy efficient with insignificant area overhead.","PeriodicalId":128327,"journal":{"name":"20th International Symposium on Quality Electronic Design (ISQED)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124911467","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recent study shows that neuromorphic hardware can achieve state-of-the-art performance in various cognitive tasks. However, limitations in fabrication technology has led to limitations in fan-in, fan-out, memory capacity, connectivity etc., making neuromorphic chips difficult to program. Neural networks have to satisfy specific constraints in order to be mapped to hardware, which not only requires developers to have knowledge of specific hardware, but also makes training difficult. We proposed a general framework to address above issues. It consists of a workflow to convert an existing neural network to satisfy the hardware constrains while minimizing the error caused by conversion, algorithms to increase hardware resource utilization and minimize on-chip communication cost are also proposed and evaluated. The experimental results show that the framework reduces conversion error to 0.67%, and reduces 53% of communication latency.","PeriodicalId":128327,"journal":{"name":"20th International Symposium on Quality Electronic Design (ISQED)","volume":"109 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117311588","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we illustrate that unlike deep CNNs, MS-CNNs develop a form of contextual awareness of input data in initial stages, which could be used to dynamically change the structure and connectivity of such networks to reduce their computational complexity, making them a better fit for low-power and real-time systems. We suggest three run-time optimization policies, which are capable of exploring such contextual knowledge, and illustrate how the proposed policies construct a dynamic architecture suitable for a wide range of applications with varied accuracy requirements, resources, and time-budget, without further need for network re-training. Moreover, we propose variable and dynamic bit-length fixed-point conversion to further reduce the memory footprint of the MS-CNNs.","PeriodicalId":128327,"journal":{"name":"20th International Symposium on Quality Electronic Design (ISQED)","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116326389","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents design of kNN-CAM, a k-Nearest Neighbors (kNN)-based Configurable Approximate floating point Multiplier. kNN-CAM utilizes approximate computing opportunities to deliver significant area and energy savings. A kNN engine is trained on a sufficiently large set of input data to learn the quantity of bit truncation that can be performed in each floating point input with the goal of minimizing energy and area. Next, this trained engine is used to predict the level of approximation for unseen data. Experimental results show that kNN-CAM provides about 67% area saving and 19% speedup while losing only 4.86% accuracy when compared to a 100% accurate multiplier. Furthermore, the application of kNN-CAM in implementation of a handwritten digit recognition provides 47.2% area saving while the accuracy is dropped by only 0.3%.","PeriodicalId":128327,"journal":{"name":"20th International Symposium on Quality Electronic Design (ISQED)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131660936","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, its nontrivial runtime becomes a bottleneck that prevents extensive solution search in DSE. In this work, we develop a mapping-based HLS technique that is fast and friendly to local incremental changes. It exploits the static-single assignment (SSA)-form intermediate representation (IR), starts with direct mapping from the IR to a fully pipelined circuit and performs incremental resource sharing in an iterative manner, which then alters the fully pipelined circuit to a partially pipelined or nonpipelined circuit. An algorithm is also proposed for automatic synthesis of pipeline interlocks to avoid structural hazards incurred by resource conflicts. Experimental results show that the proposed method is fast without loss of circuit performance in terms of throughput.","PeriodicalId":128327,"journal":{"name":"20th International Symposium on Quality Electronic Design (ISQED)","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116592784","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
