However, it requires a comprehensive and unambiguous description of all employed digital artifacts, in particular data, code and the computational environment. Recently, the FAIR Guiding Principles have been published to support reproducible research. In this paper, a cloud-based biomedical collaboration platform has been evaluated regarding FAIR principles and has been extended to support reproducibility. The FAICE suite is presented, encompassing tools to thoroughly describe and reproduce a computational experiment within the original execution environment as well as within a dynamically configured VM.","PeriodicalId":128267,"journal":{"name":"Companion Proceedings of the10th International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116981159","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Moreover, most cloud providers offer multiple instance configurations, with large variations of computational power and cost. A combination between the application requirements and the variety of instance types of the cloud could be explored to improve the cost efficiency of the application execution. In this paper, we introduce the cost-delay product as a metric to measure the cost efficiency of cloud systems. With this metric, cloud tenants can evaluate different tradeoffs between cost and performance for their application, depending on their preferences. We explore the use of multiple instance types to create heterogeneous cluster systems in the cloud. Our results show that heterogeneous clouds can have a better cost efficiency than homogeneous systems, reducing the price of execution while maintaining a similar application performance. Furthermore, by comparing the cost-delay product, the user can select an instance mix that is most suitable for his needs.","PeriodicalId":128267,"journal":{"name":"Companion Proceedings of the10th International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"91 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123716015","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Customers therefore does not need to worry about infrastructure or storage. Cloud Service Providers (CSP) make custom built applications available to customers online. Also, organisations and enterprises can build and deploy applications based on platforms provided by the Cloud service provider. Scalable storage and computing resources is also made available to consumers on the Clouds at a cost. Cloud Computing takes virtualization a step further through the use of virtual machines, it allows several customers share the same physical machine. In addition, it is possible for numerous customers to share applications provided by a CSP; this sharing model is known as multi-tenancy. Though Multi-tenancy has its drawbacks but however, it is highly desirable based on its cost efficiency. This paper presents the comprehensive study of existing literatures on relevant issues and development relating to cloud multi-tenancy using reliable methods. This study examines recent trends in the area of cloud multi-tenancy and provides a guide for future research. The analyses of this comprehensive study was based on the following questions relating to recent study in multi-tenancy which are: what is the current trend and development in cloud multi-tenancy? Existing publications were analyzed in this area including journals, conferences, white papers and publications in reputable magazines. The expected result at the end of this review is the identification of trends in cloud multi-tenancy. This will be of benefit to prospective cloud users and even cloud providers.","PeriodicalId":128267,"journal":{"name":"Companion Proceedings of the10th International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126262580","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Exposome project aims to bring together such data files from different sources to draw previously unknown insights into medical and other types of issues, such as cardiovascular disease and infant mortality. Data from these and other providers, however, continues to grow with new data added frequently; so, the process of finding the correct or desired data is a quite cumbersome and time-consuming task. The data may also be unstructured causing relational databases to be less optimal for handling and processing such enormous data volumes. Thus, NoSQL databases offer a promising means to organize and allow parallel access to the data as presented in this paper. The aim is to provide a retrieval system that deals with disparate files and unstructured data while providing an easy and efficient solution for data selection to the researchers. The paper discusses various processes that can be used and optimized to eliminate critical challenges haunting big data processing. The key features of the system include: auto data dictionary creation, conflict resolution, null data handling, and an assistive user interface.","PeriodicalId":128267,"journal":{"name":"Companion Proceedings of the10th International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131780099","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, not all services scale in or out uniformly. The performance of an application composed of microservices depends largely on a suitable combination of replica count and resource capacity. In practice, this implies limitations to the efficiency of autoscalers which often overscale based on an isolated consideration of single service metrics. Consequently, application providers pay more than necessary despite zero gain in overall performance. Solving this issue requires an application-specific determination of scaling limits due to the general infeasibility of an application-agnostic solution. In this paper, we study microservices scalability, the auto-scaling of containers as microservice implementations and the relation between the number of replicas and the resulting application task performance. We contribute a replica count determination solution with a mathematical approach. Furthermore, we offer a calibration software tool which places scalability boundaries into declarative composition descriptions of applications ready to be consumed by cloud platforms.","PeriodicalId":128267,"journal":{"name":"Companion Proceedings of the10th International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133376410","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The popularity of cloud services is so immense such that any failure on their part leads to serious consequences on the population at large. Service failures cause the Service Level Agreement (SLA) between cloud service provider and service subscriber to be violated, leading to financial losses and reputation hit for the subscriber. Even when the latter is entitled to claim compensation from the provider, they are still left with the burden of constructing proof which requires capturing and preserving relevant data. This process is typically manual, expensive and time-consuming. To address this problem, we first analyse the enforcement of cloud SLAs and identify main properties that a solution ought to have. We subsequently propose a method, based on the concept of fair exchange, and show that our approach enforces cloud SLA","PeriodicalId":128267,"journal":{"name":"Companion Proceedings of the10th International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116770179","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ludlow","doi":"10.1145/3147234.3148090","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1145/3147234.3148090","url":null,"abstract":"Smart City: Challenges and Opportunities-Experiences from European Smart Cities Projects Cities globally embody the challenge of how to improve competitiveness while achieving social cohesion and environmental sustainability. Cities are fertile ground for science and technology, innovation and cultural activity, but at the same time, they are also places where problems such as environmental pollution, unemployment, segregation and poverty are concentrated. Complex problems like these require a holistic approach to urban development, together with an assessment of urban policies in terms of a comprehensive set of socio-economic and environmental indicators. Smart city governance innovations are redefining the options and opportunities for city governance and planning globally. The interplay of societal and technological innovation provides a universal dynamic that is driving the generation of new models of integrated and participatory, inclusive and open governance. This dynamic is impacting and disrupting the existing orthodoxies of governance, and raising numerous questions for urban planning. What is the defining architecture of open, co-created and inclusive urban governance? What are the most effective transition pathways to this new urban governance? To what extent can common solutions and models of urban governance be applied universally and effective globally, defining a new industry business model? The presentation will draw upon extensive experience of EU funded research and innovation projects (FP7 and Horizon 2020) concerning open smart city governance. A principal point of reference and input aises from the Smarticipate ongoing experiment in the development of open governance solutions for urban planning in collaboration with the partner cities of Rome, London and Hamburg. Similarly practical city planning solutions supporting smart open governance will be showcased from a number of projects including urbanAPI, URBIS, and DECUMANUS, involving the development and implementation of smart city governance applications in major European cities including Helsinki, London, Antwerp, Milan, Bologna and Madrid, Amiens and Osnabruck.","PeriodicalId":128267,"journal":{"name":"Companion Proceedings of the10th International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126572078","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To this end, a proof-of-concept Cloud-based Path-finding framework is introduced. This was developed to determine the practicality of relocating the computation for navigation problems from consumer-grade clients to powerful business-grade servers, with the aim of improving performance. The results gathered suggest that the solution might be impractical. However, because of the poor quality of the data, the results are largely inconclusive. Thus recommendations and questions for future research are posed.","PeriodicalId":128267,"journal":{"name":"Companion Proceedings of the10th International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132103786","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most of the IoT architecture takes client and server model -- IoT devices are connected to a server on the Cloud. Real time communication, especially from the server to client, is necessary when we consider the earthquake alert applications. WebSocket protocol, which has been successfully used in browsers for bi-directional communication, can be applied to such communication. However, we have to carefully manage the loss of connection between the client and server. In this paper, we propose a WebSocket connection management algorithm for IoT, called reconnection with dynamic ping-pong algorithm (RDPPA), focusing on improving and adapting the WebSocket protocol for connecting IoT devices. We implemented the algorithm and carried out experiments for evaluating message delivery latency and the amount of traffic overhead.","PeriodicalId":128267,"journal":{"name":"Companion Proceedings of the10th International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126824442","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
