Cloud infrastructures can be vulnerable due to a single flaw in any node with networking, computing, storage and authentication services capabilities, which can result in the exposure of vulnerabilities with severe consequences. This paper reviews various recent articles and determines the most prominent security challenges. The paper also includes the critical analysis of existing solutions to determine their limitations. Using these identified limitations, a multi-layered security framework is proposed that can be integrated within cloud components to resolve data, virtualization, access control, insiders and service unavailability challenges. A theoretical evaluation of the framework is also conducted to explore its benefits.","PeriodicalId":128267,"journal":{"name":"Companion Proceedings of the10th International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126826662","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While the current growth of cloud computing is driven by the surge of big data, data analytics, and social media applications, an investment in cloud computing has been challenging for corporate managers due to a lack of a proper decision model. This paper attempts to identify critical variables of cloud capacity decisions from corporate clients' perspectives and develops a mathematical model to aid in a hybrid cloud investment decision under probabilistic computing demands.","PeriodicalId":128267,"journal":{"name":"Companion Proceedings of the10th International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"47 6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116317834","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Frequently, applications are run in a virtual machine in the cloud. Because cloud providers are datacentre facilities that are often distant from users, unacceptably high latencies are experienced in some applications. Fog computing can be seen as a cloud computing extension, namely cloudlets, located in access points at the edge of the network and hence able to provide lower latencies than the cloud. However, as mobile devices and applications become more popular, users' computing and data capacities should be maintained close to the user to keep latencies as low as possible. This paper discusses resource allocation in fog computing in the face of users' mobility and introduces MyiFogSim, an extension of iFogSim to support mobility through migration of virtual machines between cloudlets. Moreover, a migration policy is proposed, and MyiFogSim is used to analyze the policy impact on application quality of service. Results suggest that the policy can promote lower latencies when compared to a scenario without the migration policy.","PeriodicalId":128267,"journal":{"name":"Companion Proceedings of the10th International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126972001","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hence, LXCs can make an efficient and secure big data analytic framework with the help of secure, efficient, easily scalable, and highly available databases. A concern for security on high performance computing clusters is high for the transdisciplinary Texas Tech University (TTU) EXPOSOME Project. This project mainly focuses on sensitive healthcare data which is operating in the Quanah Linux cluster in the High Performance Computing Center of Texas Tech University. Data privacy in this project is in 4 areas: the database, the network infrastructure, web applications, and physical security, in line with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). The study in this paper investigates how to assure the TTU EXPOSOME Project data security by proposing a secure data analytic framework with the Singularity Linux container and the MongoDB NoSQL database, commonly available at TTU. First, the paper investigates what are the advantages of LXCs over VMs with security and performance perspectives. Then, it focuses on four main HIPAA required areas in data security, such as authentication, authorization, encryption, and auditing, in order to make sure system security is assured to handle healthcare data. Finally it shows how the TTU EXPOSOME Project strengthens security in the aforementioned four areas using MongoDB and Singularity, such that system security is approaching compliance with HIPAA.","PeriodicalId":128267,"journal":{"name":"Companion Proceedings of the10th International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125791710","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, the usage of free resources distributed around us such as 'Cloud as a Service' is witnessing a great importance. Ubiquitous computing turned out to be a fact that has many unutilized resources. These unutilized resources can be used to create Ad-hoc Cloud. In this paper, we create a novel mobile ad-hoc cloud based on a network of interconnected low cost, small size, resource constrained and widely available devices. We present a novel application to detect criminals using low cost equipment. This way the application can be considered a method that compensates the total cost that was needed for creating the cloud infrastructure and operational cost. Simulation studies showed that the performance of the created ad-hoc cloud is acceptable in comparison with a small scale conventional cloud hosting container based distributed application.","PeriodicalId":128267,"journal":{"name":"Companion Proceedings of the10th International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132300893","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Yet, the shared and on-demand nature of the cloud paradigm introduces a new breed of security threats that generally deter stakeholders from relinquishing control of their critical assets to third-party cloud providers. One way to thwart these threats is to instill suitable access control policies into cloud services that protect these assets. Nevertheless, the dynamic nature of cloud environments calls for policies that are able to incorporate a potentially complex body of contextual knowledge. This complexity is further amplified by the interplay that inevitably occurs between the different policies, as well as by the dynamically-evolving nature of an organisation's business and security needs. We argue that one way to tame this complexity is to devise a generic framework that facilitates the governance of policies. This paper presents a particular aspect of such a framework, namely an approach to determining the repercussions that policy retirement actions have on the overall protection of critical assets in the cloud.","PeriodicalId":128267,"journal":{"name":"Companion Proceedings of the10th International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132792022","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Distributed event stream processing systems, in its turn, are a specific kind of systems that help us to parallelize event processing. Therefore, they provide us capabilities to produce quick insights and decisions, in near real-time, on top of multiple data streams. However, current systems for large scale processing do not focus on Internet of Things and Sensor Network workloads, which makes the performance decrease quickly as the workload size increases. In order to process large scale events with acceptable latency percentiles and high throughput, special systems are needed, such as distributed event stream processing systems. In this work, we propose an architecture for Internet of Things data workloads, in a combination of sensor networks data sources and distributed event stream processing systems, focused on smart grid data profiles. In our evaluations, the system was able to process up to 45K messages per second using 8 processing nodes, while providing stable latencies for micro-batches above 30 seconds.","PeriodicalId":128267,"journal":{"name":"Companion Proceedings of the10th International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114881089","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We examine standard authentication mechanisms in this context, and we introduce new comprehensive, automated, and fine-grained mutual authentication mechanisms that rely on attestation, with particular attention to provisioning and managing secrets. Prototype implementations and benchmark results indicate that mutual attestation introduces only modest overheads and can be made to meet or exceed the performance of common but weaker authentication mechanisms in many scenarios.","PeriodicalId":128267,"journal":{"name":"Companion Proceedings of the10th International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"388 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115913013","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cloud research has been recently evolving to three different views: improve applications already running in the cloud, move applications to the cloud, and also making the distributed infrastructure suitable for new types of applications with different requirements. This includes applications that run in mobile devices and also internet of things (IoT) applications, which can require lower latencies or more processing capacity closer to the edge of the network, resulting in a distributed infrastructure that complements the centralized cloud data centres.","PeriodicalId":128267,"journal":{"name":"Companion Proceedings of the10th International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131737618","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
