Failure occurrences within such tightly-coupled systems while are expected, do not easily lend to predictive modeling due to the complex interactions between interconnected service layers. This work examines service level instabilities, occurring within data centers, participating in (HEP) scientific research. We present a stability measure based on which a failure event selection process is deployed to detect periods of instability within individual data centers. Experts recognize that understanding conditions for failure is crucial when designing recovery procedures. For distributed computing systems risk and failure analysis facilitates implementation of measures for service availability, subsystem recovery and network redundancy.","PeriodicalId":128267,"journal":{"name":"Companion Proceedings of the10th International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124957720","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These uncertainties are modeled by probability distribution functions in past researches or totally ignored in some cases. In this paper, we propose a novel deadline constrained workflow scheduling algorithm which handles the uncertainties in scheduling workflows in the IaaS Clouds. Our proposed model addresses the uncertainties related to: the estimation of task execution times, and the delay in provisioning computational Cloud resources. The workflow scheduling problem is considered as a cost-optimized, deadline-constrained optimization problem. In our model, we consider knowledge of the interval of uncertainty for modeling the execution time rather than using a known probability distribution function or precise estimations which are very sensitive to variations. Simulation results from experiments with synthetic workflows show that our proposal is robust to fluctuations in estimates of task runtimes and is able to produce high quality schedules that have deadline guarantees with minimal penalty cost trade-off depending on the length of the interval of uncertainty.","PeriodicalId":128267,"journal":{"name":"Companion Proceedings of the10th International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"120 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114638938","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, this paper specifies and develops an Integerated Component for Cloud Services (ISCS) that enables secure and trusted access to data and related services in the cloud. That means that the ISCS controls and handles access-related aspects such as authentication, authorization and registration. Furthermore, it is deployed and used in a large scale research project, in which it secures cloud services relating to electric mobility. ISCS is realized using OAuth and OpenID, whereas both are implemented by existing open source libraries. OAuth is a standard allowing services and applications to access safety critical resources in the cloud using a trustworthy infrastructure. OpenID is a popular standard originating from the web community, facilitating cross-domain authentication for portal users. The combination of both standards provides rich functionality, covering substantial aspects related to cloud service protection and security.","PeriodicalId":128267,"journal":{"name":"Companion Proceedings of the10th International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130827444","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many works studied storage structures of services. Among them, a multilevel index model has been proved very efficient for service storage (including retrieval, addition and deletion etc.) in large-scale service repositories. A novel conception of \"key\" in the multilevel index model was used to remove much redundancy and speedup service retrieval significantly. But they did not discuss to what extent a key selection method can affect retrieval efficiency and whether it affects retrieval stability and addition efficiency. Focusing on these questions, our theoretical analysis and experiments proved that, in a multilevel index, different key selection methods cannot affect retrieval efficiency but do affect retrieval stability and addition efficiency. An improved key selection method is proposed. It saves nearly 50% addition time and reduces more than 80% instability (measured by standard deviation) without loss of retrieval efficiency.","PeriodicalId":128267,"journal":{"name":"Companion Proceedings of the10th International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"95 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133722986","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Previous studies mainly concern the impact of spreading and annihilation rate of a rumor on its spreading process in the undirected scale-free networks. In this paper, we investigate the impact from individual activity. The individual activity varies widely in social networks, which determines how likely a spreader would disseminate a received rumor out to its neighbors. For the Barabá si-Albert scale-free networks, our analytical and simulation results surprisingly reveal that the final informed scale of a rumor is unrelated to the individual activity. To provide a timely estimation of the final informed scale, we propose an accelerated Monte-Carlo algorithm, which not only drastically promotes the efficiency of Monte-Carlo simulation, but also guarantees its validity. Our work is thus helpful to further understand the information dissemination on real-world social networks. The accelerated Monte-Carlo algorithm is also capable of further promoting related studies on epidemic-style dynamical processes.","PeriodicalId":128267,"journal":{"name":"Companion Proceedings of the10th International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"95 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124625069","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Fog computing, located as close as possible to data sources at the edge of IoT systems, deals with this problem. Some IoT data are sensitive and require privacy controls. The proposed Policy Enforcement Fog Module (PEFM), running within a single fog, operates close to data sources connected to their fog, and enforces privacy policies for all sensitive IoT data generated by these data sources. PEFM distinguishes two kinds of fog data processing. First, fog nodes process data for local IoT applications, running within the local fog. All real-time data processing must be local to satisfy real-time constraints. Second, fog nodes disseminate data to nodes beyond the local fog (including remote fogs and clouds) for remote (and non-real-time) IoT applications. PEFM has two components for these two kinds of fog data processing. First, Local Policy Enforcement Module (LPEM), performs direct privacy policy enforcement for sensitive data accessed by local IoT applications. Second, Remote Policy Enforcement Module (RPEM), sets up a mechanism for indirectly enforcing privacy policies for sensitive data sent to remote IoT applications. RPEM is based on creating and disseminating Active Data Bundles-software constructs bundling inseparably sensitive data, their privacy policies, and an execution engine able to enforce privacy policies. To prove effectiveness and efficiency of the solution, we developed a proof-of-concept scenario for a smart home IoT application. We investigate privacy threats for sensitive IoT data and show a framework for using PEFM to overcome these threats.","PeriodicalId":128267,"journal":{"name":"Companion Proceedings of the10th International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121668200","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While the Robot Operating System (ROS) is promising to open the world of robotics to developers, a proper platform and ecosystem supporting robotic applications development is still missing. This work presents an example of cloud robotics application in which cloud computing is not just complementing limited robot capabilities, but is leveraged to provide a development and operations environment supporting the complete life-cycle of a robotics-enabled application.
