Although current simulation tools illustrate what is happening in the complex systems, they lack the means to represent the narrative aspects of the exhibited behaviors in order to provide an account for the behaviors. This knowledge is embedded in the structure of the system, but the user has to perform the analysis manually, which is a highly challenging task. In this paper we present the development and evaluation of the visualization lab that visualizes the behaviors of system dynamics models using multimedia, focusing on the use of video clips.","PeriodicalId":128089,"journal":{"name":"2008 Eighth IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125281350","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Children with dyslexia have special learning needs (e.g., more teacher support), which currently only specialized institutions can provide. However, this takes children out of their peer group and causes social problems. On the other side, there is general-purpose reading support software, which are not geared towards children with dyslexia as they lack personalization. AGENT-DYSL brings together speech and image recognition as well as semantic technologies to build a truly adaptive reading support system for children with dyslexia.","PeriodicalId":128089,"journal":{"name":"2008 Eighth IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126156919","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Web sites supporting three traditional, face-to-face and essentially practical CS2 courses are audited using specific software. The courses web sites include organizational information about the course, theoretical resources, notes, laboratory materials and a web forum for queries and interaction among the students supervised by the teaching staff. Collected data provide information about navigation patterns. In this paper, the analysis performed is described, as well as the main conclusions reached. Results include information about studying habits as well as web content design; effectiveness of changes in course methodology is analyzed too. Finally, conclusions and main lessons learned are presented.","PeriodicalId":128089,"journal":{"name":"2008 Eighth IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies","volume":"84 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125022224","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Research on algorithm visualization (AV) systems indicates that their use can improve the understanding of algorithms when compared with the traditional ways of teaching. However, the design of AV systems does not reflect current research-based guidelines regarding productive pedagogical methods for algorithm learning. We suggest that the effectiveness of AV systems as e-learning tools can be improved by facilitating scripted collaboration of learners when working with visual representation of algorithms. This work in progress presents the architecture of AlCoLab, an AV system that also implements collaboration scripts as a tool to guide students in creative teamwork.","PeriodicalId":128089,"journal":{"name":"2008 Eighth IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130052448","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nevertheless, current standards do not provide appropriate mechanisms to obtain a significant assessment about the student's performance while interacting with a simulation neither to influence on the teaching-learning process. This work proposes a SCORM-compliant architecture which includes a tutoring module for simulations (TMS). The main objective consists in providing mechanisms to track and \"observe\" the student's performance (while interacting with a simulation), thus enabling the TMS to take decisions or intervene when necessary, and/or to modify the course of the simulation.","PeriodicalId":128089,"journal":{"name":"2008 Eighth IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128692072","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This method provides a meaningful way to keep a piece of information presented to audience in a classroom or seminar because they usually have to spend much time on perceiving the complex concepts conveyed by the instructor or speaker. With the successful integration of captured materials and access interfaces, students could review the lectures again and again. In this paper, we keep the core ideas of automated capture for classroom experience and structural access for multimedia documents in mind to develop an application which can be used to record the lecturing process when teaching/learning a language. All recorded materials of a lecture are packaged in the form of Web documents which can be accessed via the Internet (online) or from the local computers (offline).","PeriodicalId":128089,"journal":{"name":"2008 Eighth IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125346717","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
