Hence, the aim of this paper was to systematically investigate the variation of the sensitivity threshold when bad data of various magnitudes were individually injected into each measurement. Subsequently, the relationship between bad data and sensitivity threshold could be observed. Moreover, the relationship of sensitivity threshold with the redundancy of measurements were also analyzed. Two test cases were built using IEEE 14 bus test system. Simulations results demonstrated that minimum sensitivity threshold should not be fixed as is the case currently.","PeriodicalId":127217,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 8th GCC Conference & Exhibition","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129735603","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed system consists of two detection subsystems; one on the buses and the other on the bus stations, database system and a website. In the bus detection subsystem, the nearby stations will be easily detected and then announced through a voice message inside the bus. Moreover, any existing blind person in the surrounding area of the station will be detected by the bus subsystem to alert the bus driver about the number of blind persons. In the bus station subsystem, the coming buses will be detected and then announced in the station in order to alert the blind people. A complete system prototype has been constructed and tested to validate the proposed system. The results show that the system performance is promising in terms of system functionality, safety, and cost.","PeriodicalId":127217,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 8th GCC Conference & Exhibition","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129228338","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These systems are made up of sensing, processing, and actuation components that are not limited to a specific type of application and potentially can be extended to multiple domains and may cover spatially smaller or larger areas. In this paper, we revisit the Human-Robot Cloud architecture and present its pilot deployment on the campus of NCSR Demokritos, a research institution in Greece. In particular, our concrete deployment aims to be demonstrated in three specific application scenarios; namely, Human-Aware Smart Buildings with Energy Optimization, Security and Surveillance, and Smart Tour Guide System. In this paper, we present in detail an example implementation of the Smart Buildings scenario: a real-world application with immediate benefits in energy optimization and energy savings. Environmentally sensitive issues, such as the ground-up development of energy efficient buildings or reducing the environmental impact of the existing infrastructure, has received much attention in the past. However, the traditionally offered solutions are central, non-transferable to other infrastructure, non-scalable and suffer from single points of failure. On the contrary, in this work, which is based on a specialization of the generic Human-Robot Cloud architecture, we attempt to move beyond the industrially available solutions to meet the requirements for scalable, reconfigurable and redistributable sensory, processing, and actuation units within buildings. A set of cameras, laser range finders, and other sensors, together with a number of processing and actuation elements, including face detection, expression recognition, and people trackers, are transformed to a prototypical reconfigurable distributed extended cognitive system, which can support multiple applications in the future.","PeriodicalId":127217,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 8th GCC Conference & Exhibition","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128326786","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, an adaptive PID control algorithm has been discussed to track the process temperature. The presented control algorithm employs Lyapunov function based artificial neural networks for online tuning of proportional, integral and derivative actions. This algorithm has been successfully tested on the laboratory temperature control process trainer. For comparative analysis, the results have been contrasted with the conventional PID scheme. The experimental findings show that improved and stable tracking is achieved with the proposed adaptive PID controller.","PeriodicalId":127217,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 8th GCC Conference & Exhibition","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121449560","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Efforts have been placed to design machine vision systems (MVS) that are inspired by human vision system (HVS). Attention is one of the important properties of HVS, with which the human can focus only on part of the scene at a time; regions with more abrupt features attract human attention more than other regions. This property improves the speed of HVS in recognizing and identifying the contents of a scene. In this paper, we will discuss the human attention and its application in MVS. In addition, a new method of extracting regions of interest and hence interesting objects from the images is presented. The new method utilizes neural networks as classifiers to classify important and unimportant regions.","PeriodicalId":127217,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 8th GCC Conference & Exhibition","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124431194","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To address this issue three studies were carried out (1) an investigation of the factors that influence females to enroll in collegiate STEM programs so that more effective outreach can occur, (2) an analysis of changes in female self-efficacy and its relation to class performance, (3) an exploration of student learning styles. The three studies concluded respectively that female enrollment and persistence in STEM programs is greatly influenced by pre-collegiate exposure to career pathways in STEM, personal self-efficacy as it relates to STEM programs, and access to a curriculum program that integrates sensing, visual and sequential learning styles.","PeriodicalId":127217,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 8th GCC Conference & Exhibition","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127645953","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is shown that Hamiltonian mechanical systems and systems in strict feedback form can be made globally finite-time stable by smooth parameterized feedbacks. We show that we could bring all the trajectories of the closed-loop system to a small neighborhood of the origin in finite time and without peaking. Quantification of the settling time is also given in terms of two design parameters. Illustrative examples are provided to illustrate the proposed control design.","PeriodicalId":127217,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 8th GCC Conference & Exhibition","volume":"93 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130978928","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They can't understand or enrich the user's natural language questions easily or offer the recommendation that fits the user's exact needs. Health and food information are examples of critical domains where the users have a lot of questions that need to be understood well, enriched and processed to retrieve answers that match the user's needs. Using the personalization and the semantic techniques help us to propose a framework that enriches the user's questions and retrieves more relevant results. In this paper, we analyze the user's preferences related to the health and food domains, and then propose a user's profile ontology that represents these preferences and map them to the pre-defined domain ontologies. The proposed framework has been implemented and the experimental results show promising results with user satisfaction.","PeriodicalId":127217,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 8th GCC Conference & Exhibition","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130111201","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
