The algorithms presented in this work include mel-frequency cepstra, perceptual linear prediction, filter bank amplitudes, and delta features. The framework for the front-end system was carefully designed to ensure simple integration into speech processing software. The modular design of the software along with an intuitive GUI provide a powerful tutorial by allowing a wide selection of algorithms. The software is written in a tutorial fashion, with a direct correlation between algorithmic lines of code and equations in the technical paper.","PeriodicalId":126922,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE Southeastcon'99. Application of a feedback loop is required to stabilize it. This paper provides a practical touch to the undergraduate linear control systems course, where compensation is commonly and theoretically applied in various control systems to achieve stability and in which no practical insight is provided as to what constitutes a feedback, nor how it can be physically realized. This paper shows the design of a feedback system. We hope that the paper will enlighten undergraduate linear control students.","PeriodicalId":126922,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE Southeastcon'99. Technology on the Brink of 2000 (Cat. A circuit is described that simulates the behavior of a resolver attached to a rotating electrical machine turning at constant speed. The circuit simulates the resolver in the sense that it has the same outputs and utilizes the same inputs. The machine speed being simulated is programmable using two push button switches, one to increase the speed and the other to decrease the speed. The circuit is a mixed analog and digital circuit that contains a complex programmable logic device (CPLD), flash memory chips, a digital to analog converter and operational amplifiers. The design description and test results for this circuit are given.","PeriodicalId":126922,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE Southeastcon'99. Technology on the Brink of 2000 (Cat. PSPICE is used to determine the interaction between the generator's passive components and the load being tested. Different standardized testing waveforms are then modeled using this computer based tool. The simulations are utilized to obtain similar results as with the mathematical formulation presented in international standards. Currently, we are building a hybrid surge generator in the power research laboratory at FIU. As a starting point, we are using the results obtained from several PSPICE simulations.","PeriodicalId":126922,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE Southeastcon'99. We present a description of the hard real-time C++ language (HRTC++) for real-time programming, which incorporates timing constraints consistent with the object-oriented concepts. The concepts of temporal abstract classes and virtual temporal constraints extend the inheritance mechanism of the C++ language to accommodate these real-time domain features. This significantly adapts the benefits of inheritance directly to real-time development, drawing from the contributions that inheritance renders to the reuse and consistency of software development.","PeriodicalId":126922,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE Southeastcon'99. This paper focuses on an image recognition algorithm designed to be insensitive to scaling and rotation. In addition the algorithm runs in real-time and functions well at low resolutions. The problem of locating and identifying toxic waste labels using an unmanned vehicle is discussed and used as an example for how this algorithm works. An analysis of the strong and weak points of the algorithm is made, along with suggestions for future improvements.","PeriodicalId":126922,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE Southeastcon'99. The yield model is both mathematical and simulation based where the simulation portion uses a random multiple fault injection simulation procedure while the mathematical portion accounts for defect clustering in the fabrication process. Analysis of the yield model and comparison with empirical data from actual wafer fabrications shows the model to be accurate. The NMR based approach to defect-tolerance in VLSI designs is most practical for application in gate arrays and pad-limited full and semi-custom VLSI.","PeriodicalId":126922,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE Southeastcon'99. The study is based on the fact that virtually all power factor correction (PFC) converters use a few basic converter topologies as their input stages. It is found that these converters present distinctive harmonic behaviors. Harmonic current contents and the resulting power factors that are associated with these converters under different conversion ratios are obtained analytically. The results can facilitate PFC power supply designers in choosing appropriate circuit topologies and estimating the input characteristics of their design.","PeriodicalId":126922,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE Southeastcon'99.
