We present a new high-resolution signal estimation algorithm which can estimate the spatial direction /spl theta//sub i/ and temporal frequency f/sub i/ of each source by using the virtual time-and-space array technique with MUSIC algorithm. The virtual linear array consists of one spatial subarray and one virtual temporal subarray and the parameter pair (/spl theta//sub i/, f/sub i/) of each source can be easily obtained and automatically coupled. The proposed approach is simple and direct. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the performance of the proposed technique.","PeriodicalId":126922,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE Southeastcon'99. A method is developed of automatically generating simplified portraits that capture the essence of a person's unique facial features from photos taken with a video camera. Based on these simplified images, an animated portrait communications system is then proposed that conveys mouth movements and a range of facial expressions by animation. This only requires transmitted data representing movements of the mouth and to select the appropriate expression, and thus can support video communications at a much lower bit rate than if actual photos are sent back and forth. Next we propose a catch-mode store-and-forward communication method for speech that momentarily stores a speaker's words until one sentence or statement is finished, then transmits the speech. This approach is suitable for implementation on even relatively low-performance data terminals such as PDAs since speech is not input and output simultaneously. It also has the virtue of permitting users to input speech anytime they want at will, since it does not involve any complicated procedure of requiring users to acquire a token to be given a chance to speak. Finally a prototype Digicom Club terminal was constructed that supports chat-style video and speech communication based on the proposed animated portrait and catch-mode voice communications systems.","PeriodicalId":126922,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE Southeastcon'99. Using Internet based tele-medicine application, the records and vital signs of patients in remote or rural areas can be made available to medical experts in major medical centers for real-time evaluation or diagnosis. However, since the Internet is an open system with many potential security holes, special consideration and care must be taken to ensure the safety of patient and medical data. Human gestures as a means of portraying intentions are studied and a gesture-description model that takes the meaning of such actions into consideration is developed. In the developed gesture-description model, a meaningful action is defined as a \"fundamental gesture\" and gestures are described using a combination of these fundamental gestures. The authors analyzed the polysemous nature and significance of single actions, extracted from images of interactive scenes containing people, and extracted effective single gestures. These were defined as \"fundamental gestures\" and placed in a database. A trial for two-dimensional human-animation system was then used to synthesize these fundamental gestures and conduct a subjective evaluation test to determine the effectiveness of the synthesized video animations in expressing meaning. The trials showed that by synthesizing gestures with the developed model, the ambiguity of gesture meanings could be reduced and the quality with which the meaning of gestures is expressed could be improved.","PeriodicalId":126922,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE Southeastcon'99. It has many advantages over the postal mail (paper-based mail). In contrast, Email has faster delivery with no regards to the distance or the place of the originator and the recipient. Therefore, email tends to replace some of the paper-based postal mail services with more efficient and advanced services. In order for the email systems to do the job right, security and protection must be employed in a broader range, especially for those services that require special delivery like certified mail. This paper presents the design of a practical certified exchange of electronic mail protocol that can provide the required proofs for both the originator and recipient against any repudiation.","PeriodicalId":126922,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE Southeastcon'99. The approach is based on estimating the synchronizing and damping torque coefficients of the synchronous machine using a two-state linear Kalman filter. The coefficients are estimated from the time responses of the changes in the rotor angle, rotor speed, and electromagnetic torque. These coefficients can be used as indices to provide insight into the relative stability of the synchronous machine. The two indices can also predict the possible unstable conditions and hence help the operator to take the correct control action beforehand. The performance of the Kalman filter is compared with the least-square error technique. The effect of system noise on the performance of the Kalman filter is also investigated. Compared with the least square technique, the paper shows that the Kalman filter offers several advantages. This includes significant reduction in computing time and storage needed for the estimation of the synchronizing and damping torque coefficients and its robustness in dealing with noisy measurements. This approach results in a remarkable reduction in the computational complexity associated with this problem and hence allows for on-line implementation needed for continuous monitoring of the dynamic stability indices.","PeriodicalId":126922,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE Southeastcon'99.
