Dynamic bandwidth allocation and congestion control schemes for voice and data multiplexing in wideband packet technology 宽带分组技术中语音和数据复用的动态带宽分配和拥塞控制方案

{"title":"Dynamic bandwidth allocation and congestion control schemes for voice and data multiplexing in wideband packet technology","authors":"K. Sriram","doi":"10.1109/ICC.1990.117225","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/ICC.1990.117225","url":null,"abstract":"The author describes a novel bandwidth allocation method called the (T/sub 1/, T/sub 2/) scheme. It efficiently integrates packetized voice and data traffic. Voice and data packets are queued separately, and the (T/sub 1/, T/sub 2/) scheme is used to facilitate dynamic bandwidth sharing and mutual overload protection between the two queues. T/sub 1/ and T/sub 2/ are time limits for transmitting voice and data packets continually while the voice and data queues are visited alternately. The scheme guarantees bandwidths to voice and data in the proportion of their respective time slice allocations, T/sub 1/ and T/sub 2/. However, the bandwidth allocations are flexible in the sense that whenever one queue is exhausted, the transmission is immediately moved over to the other queue if it has a packet waiting to be served. The system also implements a voice block dropping scheme in which the less significant bits in voice packets are dropped during periods of congestion. The author presents results based on a simulation model which illustrate that the two schemes together provide the desired performance in terms of very good voice quality, low delay and packet loss, efficient use of transmission bandwidth, and protection in overload.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":126008,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Communications, Including Supercomm Technical Sessions","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128910477","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The vision is a single set of standards that can meet a wide range of wireless access applications. Third-generation systems, in harmony with broadband integrated services digital networks, will use shared resources to convey many information types. A single network architecture will serve its users efficiently in many environments, including moving vehicles, indoor and outdoor public areas, residences, offices, and factories. A switching architecture referred to as a cellular packet switch, and a packet transmission technique referred to as packet reservation multiple access, are being studied. The author describes both techniques and shows how they can work together to meet the demands of third-generation wireless networking.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":126008,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Communications, Including Supercomm Technical Sessions","volume":"134 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121633183","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This scheme simultaneously estimates the near and far echo canceller coefficients by sending a special periodic training sequence and correlating a segment of the sequence with the real echo samples of the sequence. The requirements and the generation of such a training sequence are discussed and described in detail. Fast initialization of a phase-roll compensator is also discussed. The method utilizes a logical service model based on a systems view of these networks, as seen by users. Object-oriented techniques are used to describe a small set of modular classes of service objects that can be reused to design a robust set of AIN services. These techniques provide a means of shielding service designers from the underlying technical complexity of the networks and allow the model to evolve as the networks evolve. The author introduces the motivation for the service model and describes the following: the context in which the model was initially developed; the user/network relationship upon which the model is based: the methodology used to develop the model; a high-level view of the entities of the model, and conclusions about the use of the model.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":126008,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Communications, Including Supercomm Technical Sessions","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122354096","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For most companies, this preparation effort is primarily focused upon the anticipated needs of the customers. This focus could be transformed into an idealized model of the future telecommunications network's evolution. It is argued that this model should be based on the platform of standards currently being matured in the international and national telecommunications and computer standards bodies. It is also hoped that this idealized model could indicate some gaps in the current effort.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":126008,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Communications, Including Supercomm Technical Sessions","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116364856","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is asserted that the SONET approach should provide superior network performance owing to integrated functionality, resulting in correspondingly less exposure to operationally induced errors and outages, and fewer component failures. An analysis of the preliminary data supports this assertion. Significant improvements are also expected when the analysis is extended to the DS1 level. In particular, it is demonstrated by way of representative SONET- and Async-based hypothetical reference digital paths that the SONET approach significantly reduces the number of circuit packs, manual cross-connect panels, and associated jumper cables, patch cords, and connectors. Since these components are prone to failure and procedural errors, reduction in their numbers results in a significant improvement in error performance and availability of the transport network.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":126008,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Communications, Including Supercomm Technical Sessions","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126709175","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The authors propose analytic performance models for comparing the performance of the link-by-link and end-to-end approaches with respect to error control. The models consider the effects of packet error rate, propagation delays of messages, separate virtual-circuit finite buffers, and timeout mechanisms. It is shown that the average end-to-end packet delay is affected by the packet error rate, the buffer size, the number of hops along the virtual-circuit, the traffic along the virtual circuit, and the processing overhead in the link layer. Thus, in a high-speed, low-error rate, optical-fiber network, the end-to-end error-recovery scheme can achieve shorter average end-to-end packet delay.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":126008,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Communications, Including Supercomm Technical Sessions","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126889866","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Measurements were taken on a 60.8-km overwater route in New Zealand. To the spectral data collected from the field trial, a Rummler-type model has been fitted. The PDFs of the nondiversity and diversity channel model parameters are estimated from the measured data. The simulation of a MAP combiner on the nondiversity Rummler fits was found to be useful in obtaining statistics of the model parameters for a combined channel. It was found that the same general class of distributions could be used for the combined channel as was used for the nondiversity channel parameters. The combiner was effective in reducing in-band notch depths. The distributions of notch position and flat-fade component were not greatly altered by the combiner. Two diversity antenna spacings were compared, and the smaller spacing performed marginally better.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":126008,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Communications, Including Supercomm Technical Sessions","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126919480","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
