A dc wind turbine for use in dc series and series-parallel wind farms has been proposed in this paper. The operation of the dc series and series-parallel wind farm results in continuous variation of the output voltage with possibility of losing maximum power point tracking capability (MPPT). A wind turbine (WT) design with back-to-back connection of voltage source converter (VSC) and dual active bridge (DAB) dc-dc converter is proposed. An integrated storage connected to internal dc bus of the turbine with a DAB is also proposed. Simulation results show that the proposed design ensure maximum energy capture during undervoltage and overvoltage operating conditions. However magnetics significantly add to the size and cost of these systems, unless designed for high frequency operations. High frequency designs suffer from higher losses resulting from core and conductors due to increased skin and proximity effects. At higher power levels the cross-sectional area required to handle power is larger, exacerbating the high frequency effects. State-of-the-art high power density converters require thermal-aware designs from reliability perspectives. The challenge lies in designing high frequency magnetics with minimal loss, such that the maximum temperature at higher power densities does not damage the insulation, conductors or the core of the magnetic component. This work represents a systematic thermal-aware design approach for high frequency inductors and transformers, wherein a new method of ac loss prediction for interleaved transformer windings is proposed. All the designs are experimentally verified showing good thermal performance.","PeriodicalId":125885,"journal":{"name":"2017 National Power Electronics Conference (NPEC)","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132232090","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, its low threshold voltage and lower transconductance value increases difficulties in the driver circuit design due to high frequency noise and EMI problems. Therefore, appropriate selection of driver circuit parameters is necessary to avoid high frequency switching losses, noise and EMI effect which further affects the performance of power converters and decreases its efficiency. In this paper, a simple gate driver circuit design for SiC MOSFET based three level diode clamped inverter is presented. Step by step selection procedure of driver circuit components is explained. This technique monitors either phase or gain relationship of a state variable pair in the resonant tank to detect frequency drift. Considering an arbitrary n-element tank, the plant model is derived for a realistic frequency ramp caused by slowly varying ambient conditions. A generic procedure is presented not only to choose the most appropriate variable pairs for phase and gain comparison individually but also to make the final choice (phase/gain) of the ARFT approach. This method is applied to a parallel LLC converter to conclusively decide the most accurate ARFT strategy and the corresponding variable pair. Experimental results for steady-state and transient operations are showcased to validate the accuracy of the proposed scheme.","PeriodicalId":125885,"journal":{"name":"2017 National Power Electronics Conference (NPEC)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125135309","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To examine the proposed converter performance, a detailed time-domain and steady-state analysis is presented. Voltage boosting features are established and then the L, C components defining equations are formulated in terms of ripple quantities. The state-space models are derived, for continuous inductor current-mode of operation, and then small-signal analysis is performed to obtain the transfer functions. Later on these transfer functions are used in the digital controller design. The proposed circuit is able to boost the load voltage to a higher value than the conventional quadratic boost converter reported in literature. A 48 V, 50 Watt prototype point of load converter is built to supply the power at constant load voltage. A 12 V dc-battery is used as power source and 50 kHz switching frequency is adopted for the prototype converter operation both in simulation and experimentation. The proposed point of load converter effectiveness is demonstrated both in simulations and experimentation.","PeriodicalId":125885,"journal":{"name":"2017 National Power Electronics Conference (NPEC)","volume":"108 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131133922","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To full fill these requirements, power conversion systems in the form of UPS, PCS, SMPS are required to be developed. Also various applications require different servo drives for controlled and desired speed / torque applications. Hence it is important to have efficient, compact, and reliable power conversion units with high power density to supply a wide range of loads for Military systems. More and more efforts are required for better power electronic systems in terms of reliability to ensure high availability, long life, sufficient robustness, low maintenance for such applications. Wideband gap devices such as Silicon Carbide (SiC) and Gallium Nitride (GaN) devices in power electronic converters can be used to reduce the device losses in futuristic defense applications. Unlike conventional, the electrical power generated from wind energy conversion system (WECS) acts differently as it is solely relying on the wind speed and site-specific. This paper focuses on simulating the behavior of the wind speed using Weibull distribution and calculates the power in associating the power speed characteristic of the wind turbine. The output power of the WECS is segregated to create multi-state WECS model. Adequacy assessment demands two state reliability model to estimate the adequacy of the generating system. Thus the multistate model is reduced to 2 state model using apportioning method and assess the reliability of the WECS. 15 MW wind farm is considered as the case study to validate the efficacy of the proposed methodology.","PeriodicalId":125885,"journal":{"name":"2017 National Power Electronics Conference (NPEC)","volume":"415 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124161524","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
