This work aims to design and perform a comparative analysis of LC and LCL type passive filters for harmonic reduction in standalone PV systems. The work provides procedural steps to choose the filter component values that include the reactive elements and damping resistance. The design steps for the filters consider harmonics emerging due to inverter switching. Frequency response characteristics are obtained to assess the filter performance. A 110V/250 W inverter is implemented to examine the designed filter performance on an experimental platform with the modulation algorithm implemented using a SPARTAN 3E-XCS250E FPGA processor. Simulation and experimental results are incorporated to assess the LC and LCL filter designs with regard to harmonic distortion reduction and output waveform quality.","PeriodicalId":125885,"journal":{"name":"2017 National Power Electronics Conference (NPEC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128802210","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In many of these applications switches are realized using thyristors. Heatsinks are used to facilitate the heat transfer and limit the junction temperature below the maximum specified value. In many cases thermal time constant of semi-conductor and heatsink are much longer than the time for which the thyristor conducts. Hence, the temperature profile in the thyristor package and heatsink will be in transient conditions, and use of static models will not provide proper design outcome. This demands the use of transient thermal impedance curve for the thermal calculations, instead of steady state thermal resistance. But when the subsystems such as thyristor and heatsink are physically connected together, estimation of combined thermal impedance of the overall system is difficult due to the influence of the individual subsystems on each other. In this paper a systematic procedure is formulated for the estimation of transient thermal impedance of the combined system from the known thermal impedance parameters of the individual subsystems. The procedure is validated by simulations and experimental results.","PeriodicalId":125885,"journal":{"name":"2017 National Power Electronics Conference (NPEC)","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116856287","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

External stray flux measurement based techniques have been effectively applied in a number of earlier studies for detection of various faults. In this paper a simple internal flux sensing observer coil (OC), located into stator slots, has been found to be more succinct in detection of stator inter-turn and bearing faults which constitutes nearly 80% of induction motor faults. Tools like THD, third harmonic component, and FFT analysis have been successfully applied in detection of these faults. The OC technique has been found to be more simple and effective compared to external flux sensors and current sensors employed in detection of these faults. The present work using OC technique has been implemented on a 0.746-kW three-phase four-pole 415-V squirrel-cage induction motor. Faults were experimentally created from stator winding tapings brought out on external board, and using an outer race cracked bearing.","PeriodicalId":125885,"journal":{"name":"2017 National Power Electronics Conference (NPEC)","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131238575","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To achieve controlled fusion, wide variety of power supplies are being used at experimental level, mainly categorized as converters for supplying superconducting magnets and converters for plasma heating and current drive (H&CD) systems. Power converters for supplying super conducting coils are generating very high dc current (in kA range) while high dc voltage (∼ 30–1000 kV) is required for heating and current drive systems. Present article describes stringent performance requirements demanded by H&CD system and reason for adopting Pulse Step Modulation (PSM) based or modular inverter based High Voltage Power Supply (HVPS). Article also discuss case study of PSM based HVPS along with associated challenges appearing at operation modes. In this paper, a current controller based field oriented control (FOC) method for speed control of OEWIM is proposed. By exploring various available switching combinations of the dual-inverter, several combinations are thoughtfully selected and exploited in this work that allows complete common mode voltage (CMV) elimination in the motor drive. The control structure of the proposed FOC with CMV elimination is greatly simplified as it uses simple two-level hysteresis bang-bang controllers for the control of the dual inverter system thus making the control simple to understand and easy to implement. With the proposed FOC method of OEWIM, the torque dynamics are improved. The performance of the closed loop speed control of the OEWIM drive is thoroughly analyzed and tested with the use of the proposed FOC method using MATLAB-Simulink. The ruggedness of the proposed FOC control is demonstrated under starting, load change and speed reversal conditions, to validate the proposition.","PeriodicalId":125885,"journal":{"name":"2017 National Power Electronics Conference (NPEC)","volume":"245 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116796835","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Automobile industries are investing much time and money to find out the practical alternative to vehicle powered by the internal combustion engine. Electric motors are best suited for vehicle application as they are capable of developing high starting torque. This has led to the development of battery-operated electric vehicle (EV), hybrid vehicles and fuel cell vehicles. Two prominent reason for this shift are pollution and fuel saving. Indian government has taken initiative to accelerate research and development in the field of electric vehicle by launching “National Electric Mobility Mission Plan 2020”. The focus in this paper is on the EV propulsion electrical motor drives. This paper gives an idea about the electric-drive vehicle (EDV) system on a test bench setup consisting of two induction motor drives coupled mechanically by one shaft for emulating on road operating conditions. MATLAB/Simulink results are presented on mechanical coupling of two drives on a common shaft to share the common load.","PeriodicalId":125885,"journal":{"name":"2017 National Power Electronics Conference (NPEC)","volume":"123 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127460304","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Even in industrial application and medical services, commercial PSS serves the purpose. In case of defence projects, commercial power supply system (PSS) cannot be used, due to many reasons. Some of these are stringent environmental conditions, quick deployment, mobility and EMI /EMC issues. Also many application demand compact PSS due to weight, volume and space constraints. In this paper, various reference books, Standards and papers have been reviewed and exhaustive list of reference related to PSS is given. It has been observed by the authors that there is no classification and standardization of Gensets. Therefore, an attempt has been made in this regard. Various issues and guidelines related to Genset room, Canopy, EMI / EMC issues, environmental conditions, testing and evaluation and its subsystems have been discussed. In spite of rigorous testing, it has been observed that PSS fails to start or fails to work during operation. Therefore, main reasons of such failures are also summarized in the paper.","PeriodicalId":125885,"journal":{"name":"2017 National Power Electronics Conference (NPEC)","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126653568","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There has been a steep rise in share of solar photovoltaic (PV) as a distributed generator in the main grid worldwide. Higher penetration of these solar PV systems would lead to over voltage problem in the network. A modified IEEE 13 bus distribution network is modelled in EMTP/PSCAD to understand the pattern of this voltage rise. From the initial simulation results, it is found that the deviation in the voltage with increasing penetration with solar PV systems follows a special pattern ('parabola') and not just increases linearly. This was substantiated by using standard power flow equations. Simple mathematical analysis indicate that this over voltage reverses after a certain penetration level depending on the network parameters and power injected. Such analysis would serve as a powerful tool for distribution system operators to assess the PV penetration levels in the networks.","PeriodicalId":125885,"journal":{"name":"2017 National Power Electronics Conference (NPEC)","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129257764","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
