An induction motor driven pump is fed from the solar PV array and a three phase grid using a Vienna converter. The novelty of the proposed system lies in the operation of the pump at rated water discharge when it is operated with the support of the grid. The Vienna converter serves the purpose of power flow from the grid. Moreover, it also improves the power quality at the AC mains. The proposed system is well suited for the areas where the grid support is available. The induction motor is controlled using the open loop scalar (volts/Hertz) control on account of its simple implementation with reduced sensors. Based on the availability of the power source, the modes of operation are identified and performance of the system at starting, in steady state and dynamic conditions are simulated. Simulated results show the satisfactory performance of the proposed system.","PeriodicalId":125885,"journal":{"name":"2017 National Power Electronics Conference (NPEC)","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129657300","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The SBSCMI is derived from the flying capacitor multi-level inverter and switched capacitor structure for achieving step-up dc-ac conversion. With these special composite structure, the no. of devices in the proposed SBSCMI are less as compared to conventional multilevel inverter. In this topology few switches are operated under line voltage frequency, results in reduction of switching losses. Because of switched capacitor operation, SBSCMI provides a voltage gain of 1.5 time to input voltage with a reduced switching voltage stress. The modified phase opposition and disposition sinusoidal pulse width modulation method is used as a control strategy for SBSCMI. With this control, the capacitor voltages are self-balanced and quality of output waveforms are improved significantly. The proposed SBSCMI is validated using MATLAB/simulink and the effectiveness of this topology is compared with existing topologies in aspects of power quality, device count, size of passive elements, voltage gain, switching stress and power losses.","PeriodicalId":125885,"journal":{"name":"2017 National Power Electronics Conference (NPEC)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130826280","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are various techniques available for reduction of harmonics. However, minimizing the total harmonic distortion in multilevel inverters as well as the elimination of selected harmonic order using conventional methods do not yield promising results. Therefore, authors have adopted optimization based approach for elimination of 5th, 7th and 11th order harmonics of 9 level inverter. A novel Sine cosine optimization technique has introduced in this work. Further, Newton Raphson method and Sine-Cosine algorithm is compared. According to simulation results, it has been found that the proposed technique yields significantly better selected harmonics reduction with low THD.","PeriodicalId":125885,"journal":{"name":"2017 National Power Electronics Conference (NPEC)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128427051","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A three phase AC excitation capacitor bank is connected at the stator terminals of the Induction Generator (IG) to provide the necessary reactive power support for the stand-alone operation of IG. A new simple closed loop control algorithm has been developed and implemented using dSPACE 1103 real time controller board for the variable speed driven IG-MC System. The enhanced Venturini Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) approach is used for generating the gating pulses for the MC under varying generator voltage and frequency conditions. The closed loop controller maintains the desired constant voltage and frequency at the AC load terminals of the MC with the varying nature of prime mover speed and loads. The structure and implementation of the proposed system have been completely described, also modelled and simulated in the MATLAB using the Simulink. Test results of the developed prototype of Capacitor Excited Induction Generator (CEIG) — MC system supplying stand-alone AC loads are also presented to validate the successful working of the closed loop controller and usefulness under the varying nature of speed.","PeriodicalId":125885,"journal":{"name":"2017 National Power Electronics Conference (NPEC)","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120896334","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to degradation, there is a considerable change in the series and shunt resistance of the PV module equivalent circuit and also diminishes the output power. This paper proposes a method to detect the degradation based on the transient characteristics of the oscillations in the module output voltage that occur under steady state conditions. The transient characteristics such as rise time and time constant for different series and shunt resistance is non-identical. In this paper, a parameter called time constant is used to quantify the degradation. The proposed method is verified by a simulation and is tested experimentally to prove its worthiness.","PeriodicalId":125885,"journal":{"name":"2017 National Power Electronics Conference (NPEC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131231658","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Increased power density of systems requires efficient heat transfer from semiconductor devices to the ambient. Thermal design of the system is one of the main deciding factors for reliability and therefore optimum heat sink design is required. In this work a novel heat sink is designed and tested at rated power conditions. Different heat sink designs are evaluated using thermal simulations by application of SOLIDWORKS and ANSYS tools. Thermal imaging of the heat sink under actual experimental conditions validates the design. Method for heat sink design of any arbitrary shape, for maximum heat extraction, is also presented in this paper. Key technology includes high power converter with single-phase inverter that runs at 20 kHz and yields voltage of low THD and maximum dv/dt of 2 kV/ μs to prevent partial discharge in the transformer. The HPHF system is designed for varying the rated output voltage of 500 kV from 5% to 100 % of its value and to restrict the voltage rise time below 100 ms. At first, the Cockcroft-Walton circuit is simulated and its output parameters are obtained. Then, the simulation results of the designed HPHF system supplying the CW circuit has been presented and compared with design theory.","PeriodicalId":125885,"journal":{"name":"2017 National Power Electronics Conference (NPEC)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125613989","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Generally, in conventional PV array fed water pumping system, a DC-DC converter is used for maximizing the PV array and a voltage source inverter (VSI) for converting the DC power in to AC power, however in the proposed system, only a VSI is used for optimizing the PV array power as well as controlling the SyRM. Elimination of one power conversion stage i.e. DC-DC converter in the proposed single stage SPV array powered water pumping system driven by leads to cost reduction, simplicity and an increase in the efficiency. In the proposed system, a SyRM is selected for propelling the centrifugal pump because of its simple control, robustness and higher efficiency than other AC motors. Rotor currents are absent in SyRM, which makes core losses zero in the rotor. It makes the drive control intelligible in comparison to an induction motor and permanent magnet motors. Thus the use of SyRM for driving the pump and elimination of one power conditioning stage, provide a unique solution for solar powered water pumping system. The field oriented control is used for controlling the SyRM. The behaviour of the proposed topology is analysed through the simulated results of the model developed in MATLAB under steady state and transient conditions.","PeriodicalId":125885,"journal":{"name":"2017 National Power Electronics Conference (NPEC)","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129541366","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
