Keeping two windings on rotor gives the advantage of control of rotor angle and voltage independently. Most of the work presented till now covers the stability analysis of DESG using mathematical model. However, this paper presents, the finite element method (FEM) analysis of DESG and its constructional design in which both the field windings are placed neither on d-axis nor on q-axis. Magnetic field flux distribution and a simple transient analysis of conventional synchronous generator (CSG) and DESG connected to a 3-phase R-L load with a step change in both field excitations at different instants of time is studied and results are presented here.","PeriodicalId":125885,"journal":{"name":"2017 National Power Electronics Conference (NPEC)","volume":"1997 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117026611","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Concentrating on the low voltage (LV) side of an ST, this paper proposes a grid structure where a photovoltaic (PV) system and battery energy storage system (BESS) are interfaced to the ST LV DC link. The LV AC grid consists of AC loads and a microgrid with a PV unit and DC loads. Investigation is done on how an ST can achieve proper power management, in addition to carrying out the functions of a conventional transformer on the LV side. A PSCAD simulation of the proposed grid structure is carried out and the operation of the system in the various power flow scenarios is verified. The paper also emphasizes the capability of ST to eliminate the need of other power quality improvement devices in the distribution grid by maintaining the appropriate voltages in the LV grid.","PeriodicalId":125885,"journal":{"name":"2017 National Power Electronics Conference (NPEC)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129858907","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed DC-DC converter helps in the minimization in the size of an input PV capacitor and ripples in PV current. The motor speed is skillfully adjusted by controlling the DC link voltage across split-capacitors of the midpoint converter of 4-phase SRM. It helps to eliminate the voltage and current sensors required on the motor side. The CCM (Continuous Current Mode) operation of the DC-DC converter supports to minimize the stresses on its components and to improve its conversion performance. The smooth control with reduced initial winding currents are also accomplished via perturbation size and angle control of SRM. The suitability of system is authenticated by both Matlab model response and experimental test results.","PeriodicalId":125885,"journal":{"name":"2017 National Power Electronics Conference (NPEC)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128686097","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the reliability of these converters is affected by the use of large number of power semiconductor devices. Fault-tolerant strategies improve reliability as well as availability of these converters by ensuring its operation even under device fault conditions. In this paper, the fault-tolerant operation of nine-level hybrid symmetric cascaded multilevel converter is explored for open- and short-circuit fault conditions. The converter operation is first analysed for the open-circuit fault condition. The converter reconfiguration and converter operations are then explained for short-circuit fault condition using neutral-shift and rebalancing fault tolerant strategies. The effectiveness of these techniques are then validated through simulation and experimental results.","PeriodicalId":125885,"journal":{"name":"2017 National Power Electronics Conference (NPEC)","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128735188","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A power factor correcting boost (PFC-boost) converter is connected at the front end of PMRTC to improve its input power factor closer to unity. PMRTC is a full bridge isolated DC-DC resonant converter whose output voltage is controlled by using phase shift PWM technique. The switching devices of the PMRTC are turned-ON with zero voltage across it. This minimizes total switching loss and improves efficiency. The switching frequency of the PMRTC is kept high (μ 50kHz) so that the size of the isolation transformer is reduced. Both the converters are designed, analysed, fabricated and tested separately and thereafter connected in cascade. Practical welding operation at 2.5 kW, 100 A is carried out with the cascaded converter and the experimental results are presented. The effect of sudden loading on output voltage of PFC-boost is also practically observed. The experimentally obtained results are found to be in excellent agreement with the simulated results. This upholds the accuracy of the work.","PeriodicalId":125885,"journal":{"name":"2017 National Power Electronics Conference (NPEC)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126206741","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These capacitors are subjected to different stress due to change in operating conditions. This results in degradation in their performance, leading to failure. This paper analyzes and identifies the degradation of both of these AECs based on physics of failure approach when subjected to mission profile data. Solar radiation and temperature at IIT-Kanpur (26.4499°N, 80.3319°E) for 1 month are used to generate mission profile. The suggested algorithm predicts the operational life of both the AECs. It is found that the AEC used at dc-link of the inverter faces higher stress, thereby leading to early failure as compared to AEC used at PV terminal in the two stage, single phase inverter.","PeriodicalId":125885,"journal":{"name":"2017 National Power Electronics Conference (NPEC)","volume":"252 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134371164","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Much effort has been reported in literature towards experimental determination of forces and Finite Element (FE) based models for the motor for study of electromagnetic and mechanical aspects. Several research works also propose approaches towards minimizing torque ripple and radial forces. An index to quantify the deformation that occur in an SRM that will enable comparison of various approaches to reduce vibrations is very much desirable. Towards this end, this paper proposes RMS displacement as a figure of merit, arrived at from a combination of circuit simulation and finite element studies. The approach used is computationally less intensive and is useful for estimating the performance of methods like Torque Sharing Function (TSF) usage. In this paper, a cosine TSF is used to demonstrate the suitability of the proposed index using this approach.","PeriodicalId":125885,"journal":{"name":"2017 National Power Electronics Conference (NPEC)","volume":"89 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134190827","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This makes the use of pulse width modulation (PWM) infeasible, since the frequency rating of the high voltage switches available in the market is very low. The natural alternative is the use ofnearest level control (NLC) methods, where the submodules (SM) are switched in/out in the MMC arms depending on a sorting algorithm based on the SM capacitor voltages and arm currents. However, the conventional sorting algorithm either fails to provide a tight grip on the capacitor voltages or does that at the cost of a switching frequency much higher than the fundamental. The predictive sorting algorithm (PSA), used for half-bridge MMCs, is one method which helps to achieve a compromise between the two. For HVDC application, though, the MMC may consist of full bridges (FB) in order to handle DC faults. Hence this paper proposes an extension of the PSA for its use in full-bridge MMC (FB-MMC). The modified algorithm is tested on a FB-MMC based HVDC test system and a comparison of the switching frequency patterns obtained with this method with that of the conventional sorting method is presented. The effectiveness of the proposed modified algorithm is tested by subjecting the MMC to changes in power flow directions and reduction in DC voltage. The simulations are performed in PSCAD/EMTDC platform.","PeriodicalId":125885,"journal":{"name":"2017 National Power Electronics Conference (NPEC)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121103020","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A novel approach of WPT is proposed using an additional coil between the main transmitter and receiver to enhance the transfer efficiency. The design process for the proposed WPT system is detailed, together with experimental investigation. Output voltages waveforms are presented for variable distances. Frequency domain analysis has been carried out for resonant frequency analysis and detection. It is observed that by using an intermediate coil between the transmitter and receiver coils, almost doubles the output voltage and improves the efficiency by more than four times of a two coil system. The effect of variable capacitors in the intermediate coil on the output voltage at different distances is experimented and founded that using a proper capacitor is required to achieve higher voltages. The output voltage can even be doubled if we use a proper capacitor.","PeriodicalId":125885,"journal":{"name":"2017 National Power Electronics Conference (NPEC)","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121961976","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
