Despite international conservation efforts, biodiversity is still declining due to ongoing anthropogenic threats. Protected areas have been widely adopted as a strategy for conserving biodiversity. The use of spatial conservation planning, which prioritizes areas for protection based on geo-referenced biodiversity and ecological information as well as cost of action and their feasibility, has gained popularity in the conservation discipline in the last few decades. However, there remain gaps between plans and implementation, and negative social impacts on local communities can occur, such as tension and conflict between differing priorities, perspectives, and views.MethodsTo better understand the state of the spatial conservation field and support translating research into practice, a mixed-method approach of bibliometric (n=4133 documents) and content analysis (n=2456 documents) was used to analyze and identify key research priorities, collaborative networks, and geographic and thematic patterns.ResultsWe identified that research conducted by westernized nations dominated the field, with the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia being responsible for almost two-thirds of the research globally, with research interest exponentially growing since 2010. Additionally, while there has been some refinement over time of algorithms and models, Zonation and Marxan methods developed in the 2000s remain the predominant choices of software, with a majority focus on marine ecosystems, birds, and mammals. We found a major gap in the use of social dimensions in spatial conservation case studies (only n=146; 6%).DiscussionThis gap highlights a lack of collaboration in conservation science between researchers and local communities who are affected by management decisions. We recommend including spatially explicit social dimensions from the onset of projects through participatory approaches, along with the acknowledgement by researchers of the importance of including diverse views in conservation planning to enhance implementation and outcomes that are relevant in local contexts. The effect of roads on the spread of non-native species has been frequently studied, but few studies have focused upon their effects on native tree species. We studied the effect of forest roads on the expansion dynamics of trembling aspen (<jats:italic>Populus tremuloides</jats:italic> Michx.) in a boreal forest landscape of eastern Canada. We determined whether roads act as a habitat and dispersal corridor for trembling aspen, and whether populations that established along roads act as a starting point for aspen expansion into adjacent stands. We evaluated the effect of forest roads on the distribution of trembling aspen by surveying the vegetation along 694 km of roads. In 19 stands, we compared the density and age of individuals in 100 m transects established parallel and perpendicular to roads, to determine the role of roads. Trembling aspen is abundant along the forest road network. Forest roads act sometimes as habitat corridors for trembling aspen, but their effects on its density extend only over a short distance (10 m) on each side of the roads. The forest roads did not act as a starting point for the expansion of trembling aspen into adjacent stands. Forest roads are particularly favourable habitats for trembling aspen. Due to the impact of global climate change, landslides occur frequently in coastal areas, which have significantly impacted the sustainable socio-economic development of the region. Therefore, studying the spatial distribution of landslides and the factors that drive them holds immense practical significance for the geohazards prevention and mitigation work and optimization of ecological security patterns in coastal areas. This study takes the southern Liaodong Peninsula as the study area and analyzes the spatial distribution characteristics and influence mechanism of landslides. We first applied the Getis-Ord Gi*, kernel density analysis techniques, and Ripley’s K function to explore the spatial distribution characteristics of landslides in the study area at different scales. Then, we employed the information value method to test for the linkage relationships between the driving factors and landslides. Finally, we utilized the geographical detector to reveal the potential impacts and interaction of the driving factors on landslides. The results showed that: (1) landslides in the Southern Liaodong Peninsula exhibit strong spatial clustering characteristics, and have a spatial scale effect; (2) the high susceptibility areas are mainly concentrated in the southern hilly regions and the mountainous regions in the northern parts of the study area; (3) The information value method reveals that there is an optimal combination of factors driving landslides. (4) The factor detector analysis reveals that the primary driver of landslide spatial distribution is the geomorphological types (<jats:italic>q</jats:italic>-value of 39.10%). (5) The interaction detector indicates that the interplay of all driving factor pairs exhibited an enhanced effect, which is not a simple superposition effect but bivariate and non-linear. The collective influence of natural factors and human activities holds a more substantial influence over landslide development and distribution. Ground-nesting bees are negatively impacted by anthropogenic land use change that often removes suitable nesting habitat from the landscape. Despite their enormous ecological and agricultural contributions to pollination, solitary, ground-nesting bees are often neglected, partly due to the significant obstacle of discovering exactly where these bees establish their nests. To address this limitation, we have developed a ‘community science’ project to map aggregations of ground-nesting bees globally. In certain locations, their abundances reach astounding levels, sometimes in the millions, but are scarcely known. Utilizing the iNaturalist platform, which permits geo-referencing of site observations and bee identification, we are providing public education and seeking public engagement to document bee aggregations in order to understand the nesting requirements of diverse species and open new opportunities for their conservation. Conservation priorities may then unequivocally be directed to areas of high species richness, nest densities, and nesting sites of rare bees. Such community-led efforts are vital for successful long-term management of native bees and the biotic and abiotic landscape data from nest-site localities can allow modeling to predict nest-site suitability and to readily test such predictions on the ground. Changes in autumn phenology directly impact the length of vegetation growing season and year-to-year changes in carbon uptake. Previous studies have often focused solely on the end of growing season when characterizing autumn phenology, neglecting the onset and duration of autumn. Here, we extracted the annual autumn phenological metrics, i.e., the start of brown-down phase (SOB), the end of brown-down phase (EOB), and the length of brown-down phase (LOB), for temperate China from 1982 to 2018 based on our self-developed global LSP dataset. We conducted a comparative analysis of SOB, EOB, and LOB in the field of their spatial distribution, temporal trends, and performance on various categories of vegetated regions (i.e., forests, grasslands, croplands, and vegetated areas in urban lands (V_Urban)). The results showed a significant negative correlation between the timing of autumn phenological metrics and latitude in temperate China. Between 1982 and 2018, there were significant positive increasing trends in EOB and LOB in V_Urban, as well as in LOB in forests in temperate China. However, the annual mean SOB, EOB, and LOB did not show significant trends across the entire study area. At the local pixel scale, SOB, EOB, and LOB exhibited a combination of advanced and delayed trends within various vegetated categories. The trends of the same phenological metric were not uniform across these diverse vegetated regions. For instance, the majority of pixels with significant trends in SOB exhibited delayed trends in forests and croplands, while displaying advanced trends in grasslands and V_Urban. In this study, employing three metrics (SOB, EOB, and LOB) to describe autumn phenology enhances our understanding of the impacts of global climate change on ecosystems, offering a more comprehensive and detailed perspective. However, genetic diversity and population structure of the Pacific oysters in Dalian Sea, the major natural and farming area of the species in China, has not been systematically investigated, especially at genome-wide level, limiting the conservation and management of the species.MethodsIn this study, whole-genome resequencing of 105 individuals from seven Pacific oyster populations, including five wild and one cultured populations in Dalian and one wild population in Qingdao relatively distant from others, were first performed.ResultsA total of 2,363,318 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were identified. Based on all these SNPs, similar but relatively low genetic diversity (0.2352~0.2527) was found in the seven populations. The principal component analysis (PCA), phylogenetic and population structure analysis consistently revealed weak differentiation among the seven populations. Frequent migration events were detected among the studied populations by TreeMix, which probably led to a high genetic similarity of these populations. Rapid linkage disequilibrium (LD) decay was observed in the genome of the Pacific oyster. The arid northwestern China is a representative arid and semi-arid region. It has developed rapidly in recent years, leading to a significant increase in human activity. This increased activity has had a pronounced impact on the ecosystem, posing a major challenge to the environment. The close relationship between human activities and ecosystem service value (ESV) is crucial for the healthy development of both humans and ecosystems. However, the intricate nature of this relationship and the degree to which they are codependent remain unclear and require further investigation.MethodsThis study investigates the impact of human activities on land use intensity (LUI) and degree of urbanization (URB). It comprehensively evaluates the spatial and temporal distribution of human activities and ESV, quantifying their coordination through coupling models.ResultsThis work provides valuable insights and theoretical support for promoting the coordinated development of human activities and ESV. Overall, the LUI in the arid northwestern region decreased (from 0.485 in 2000 to 0.459 in 2020), while the URB increased (from 0.060 in 2000 to 0.087 in 2020). The ESV significantly increased, with a total growth of 556.58 billion yuan. In prefecture-level cities, the growth in ESV values ranges from 75.19 yuan/hm2 to 10,062.49 yuan/hm2.The coupling coordination degree between ESV and LUI has changed over time, transitioning from uncoordinated development to coordinated development. In addition, the coordination between ESV and URB has evolved from uncoordinated development to transitional coordination. The level of coordination between human activities and ESV in provincial capital cities significantly influences the coordination in surrounding cities.DiscussionIn conclusion, effective development recommendations are provided based on the ESV, LUI, and URB of different cities, along with a proposed development strategy for ecosystem service functions that aligns with the 14th Five-Year Plan and “Vision 2035” of each province. Their interactions are also among the richest biotic relationships, and offer significant insights into the evolution of terrestrial ecosystem complexity through the geological record. This investigation of the late Rhaetian Xujiahe and the earliest Jurassic Zhenzhuchong floral assemblages provides the first data on foliar herbivory generated by terrestrial arthropods across the Triassic–Jurassic transition in the eastern Tethys (East Asia) region. The damage types from two fossil assemblages are collectively attributed to seven functional feeding and egg-laying categories (i.e., hole feeding, margin feeding, surface feeding, skeletonization, piercing and sucking, oviposition, and galling). Most feeding strategies are spread across the major plant groups and persist through the Triassic–Jurassic boundary, with the exception of skeletonization (a category of external foliage feeding), which was restricted to the latest Triassic within dipteridacean ferns. The survey reveals that the respective frequency and diversity of interactions between plants and insects prior to and following the end-Triassic mass extinction event are almost the same, despite a substantial turnover of floral components. This suggest that insect herbivores were largely able to transfer to alternative (but commonly related) plant groups during the dramatic floristic turnover and environmental changes at the end of the Triassic. Sporadic occurrences of foliar modifications, such as marginal cusps on pinnules of <jats:italic>Pterophyllum</jats:italic> and prominent ridges on the rachises of some ferns and bennettites are interpreted as adaptations for defense against insect herbivores. A few differences in taxonomic composition and herbivory representation between the latest Triassic Xujiahe flora and the earliest Jurassic Zhenzhuchong flora are more likely to be related to collection and preservational biases rather than reflecting palaeoecological changes.
