Assessment is done for seven selected small wind turbines and one measured set of wind speed data with the micropower optimization modeling tool HOMER. Goal was to investigate how estimated energy production and economical parameters are sensitive to the selection of small wind turbine. Selected turbines have similar rated power, but different blades diameter and aerodynamic characteristics. Energy production was quantified for one year with hourly resolution. Results from all different wind turbines were compared on the power production base, and on the economical base. Two sensitivity cases related to the wind speed and installation lifetime were also simulated. Results are showing significant importance of the small wind turbine selection for the both total energy production and economical feasibility. This makes small wind turbine characteristics such as reliability and power curves testing very important.","PeriodicalId":122830,"journal":{"name":"AFRICON 2009","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134272357","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, it is difficult to take into account all possible scenarios as the variance of error at the output of the minimum mean square error (MMSE) estimator depends on the second-order channel statistics. This vehicle is driven directly by two wheel motors installed on its rear wheels, which are compact, low weight, and highly efficient. The optimal current waveform of the same pattern as the back electromagnetic force is used to increase the output torque and efficiency, while the field weakening control is used to extend the speed range of the motor. The electric differential system is proposed for stable maneuverability of the vehicle against system uncertainties and external disturbances.","PeriodicalId":122830,"journal":{"name":"AFRICON 2009","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133503718","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The “generalized network formulation” for aperture problems is formulated in terms of linear operator equations and expanded in RWG functions in a Galerkin sense. The approach uses a simultaneous representation of the equivalent surface current densities. Representative aperture shapes have been considered such as rectangular, elliptic, and cross—shaped. Numerical results are presented, which are in good agreement with the published data.","PeriodicalId":122830,"journal":{"name":"AFRICON 2009","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129736255","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

China's and other Asian countries' abilities have been able to produce quality products efficiently and at lower comparative costs has been threatening apparel manufacturers in Kenya. This paper examines how apparel firms could develop competitive advantages in both local and global markets. It uses Porter's (1998b) diamond model as a basis of analysis for interpreting competitive factors within Kenya's apparel industry. In addition to literature reviews, the paper provides an overview of Kenya's apparel sector business dynamics and its relationships with local and global markets. Conclusions are drawn based on Porter's analysis of theoretical models in relationship to Kenya's apparel industry business dynamics. Taking into account the global apparel business factors, recommendations are made on how the Kenya's apparel industry can regain business competitiveness.","PeriodicalId":122830,"journal":{"name":"AFRICON 2009","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116324158","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Jitter requirements have become more stringent with higher speed serial communication links. Jitter degrades the signal integrity at the receiver by introducing a timing deviation from the ideal or expected timing event. A proposal for reducing jitter, with the main focus on reducing data dependent jitter, is presented by employing adaptive finite impulse response (FIR) filter pre-emphasis. The channel bandwidth limitation, mainly caused by the skin effect of the conductor, and the parasitic components added by the integrated circuit package cause a nonflat frequency response and hence data dependent jitter. The pre-emphasis FIR filter is used to compensate for the frequency dependent chip package parasitic effects and the copper communication channel by altering the signal waveform before transmission. This paper presents the analysis and evaluation of adaptive FIR filter pre-emphasis to reduce data dependent jitter and to ultimately achieve higher data rates without adding significant implementation complexity. Simulation results on the adaptation scheme are also presented.","PeriodicalId":122830,"journal":{"name":"AFRICON 2009","volume":"220 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133625605","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
