Although there is evidence that the FTO gene is associated with obesity its role in antipsychotic induced weight gain is not so clear.\u0000\u0000\u0000Methods\u0000A genetic association study was carried out to identify the association between FTO rs9939609 and antipsychotic induced weight gain. Sample consisted of 180 cases and 120 controls. Cases were patients diagnosed with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder, treated with second-generation antipsychotics for a minimum of 3 months, and had gained at least 10% of body weight. Controls were patients with schizophrenia treated with second-generation antipsychotics for a minimum of 3 months but had not gained ≥10% of body weight. Genomic DNA was extracted from whole blood. Polymerase chain reaction of the samples was done. Real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) was carried out using BIO-RAD CFX96 Touch TM PCR detection system.\u0000\u0000\u0000Results\u0000Females were significantly more among cases (58.3%) than controls (35%). Cases (52.4%) were significantly more likely to be overweight or obese than controls (13.8%). Genotype distribution was in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (p=0.43). Cochran-Armitage trend test was not significant. Risk of antipsychotic induced weight gain in the AA genotype [OR 1.69 (95% CI 0.74-3.86)] and AT genotype [OR 1.1 (95% CI 0.67-1.79)] were not significantly higher than the TT genotype. Recessive model showed that AA/AT genotypes were at significantly higher risk of being obese/overweight [OR 1.84 (95% CI 1.05-3.2)].\u0000\u0000\u0000Conclusions\u0000There was no significant association between FTO rs9939609 and antipsychotic induced weight gain. Quality of Life (QOL) is considered as an important facet of determination of success of patient management. EQ-5D-3L is a generic QOL tool. It provides an index score amalgamating responses for five descriptive questions and a visual analogue scale (VAS) value.\u0000\u0000\u0000Objectives\u0000To assess the validity and reliability of EQ-5D-3L for stroke patients in Sri Lanka, which is a LMI setting.\u0000\u0000\u0000Methods\u0000A descriptive cross sectional study was done among 100 stroke survivors among whom 50 each were managed at an ambulatory setting and an in-ward setting. A second wave of data collection was done for reliability analysis among one half of participants. The validity of EQ-5D-3L was assesses with five a-priori hypotheses. Reliability was assessed with test-retest method and with internal consistency. Non parametric Mann Whitney U test and Spearman correlation coefficients were used in the analysis.\u0000\u0000\u0000Results\u0000The EQ-5D index scores had significant positive correlation with SF-36 domain scores (p<0.001). The EQ-5D VAS scores had significant positive correlation with SF-36 domain scores (p<0.01). Index and VAS values of the EQ-5D were proved to be valid in known-group comparison (p<0.001). Participants reporting some kind of impairment for EQ-5D-3L dimensions had lower SF-36 domain scores. All the kappa values in the analysis of test-retest method were significant (p<0.001). For the VAS score, the Spearman correlation coefficient in test-reter analysis was 0.993 (p<0.001). Cronbach’s alpha value was 0.928.\u0000\u0000\u0000Conclusions\u0000and Recommendations EQ-5D-3L questionnaire demonstrates construct validity and a is a reliable toolin measuring QOL among stoke survivors in Sri Lanka.

It is used in the agricultural sector as an acaricide. Acute and chronic toxicity studies of fenpyroximate in laboratory animals have been conducted by oral lavage. There were no treatment-related deaths and neuropathological evaluation in rats did not reveal any treatment-related lesions [2]. Laboratory testing has documented limited toxicities particularly irritation to the skin and eyes. LD50 for this product is 245 mg/kg for mammalians [3]. Laboratory studies have classified fenpyroximate (along with rotenone) as a Complex I inhibiting pesticide that is neurotoxic to astrocytes when cultured by in vitro bioassays [4]. Despite its worldwide usage as an insecticide, there are only few reported cases of its human toxicity. Lee et al [5] reported a case of near fatal fenpyroximate poisoning that resulted in severe lactic acidosis and cardiac arrest needing percutaneous cardiopulmonary support and therapeutic hypothermia. The authors were unable to find any case of acute neurotoxicity as a presentation following fenpyroximate poisoning in either Poisoning Center data base in Sri Lanka or in a search of the published literature using the PUBMED data base.

Both tests are deficient in the number of domains assessed. Therefore validation of Repeatable Battery for Assessment of Neuropsychological Status is important as it assesses most of the cognitive domains.\u0000\u0000\u0000Objectives\u0000To culturally adapt RBANS and investigate the validity and reliability of culturally adapted RBANS (RBANS-S).\u0000\u0000\u0000Methods\u0000Fifty four participants with major neurocognitive disorder and 60 normal controls aged >50 were administered with RBANS-S at the Cognitive Assessment Unit, Faculty of Medicine, Colombo and National Hospital of Sri Lanka. The participants were selected after a detailed clinical assessment according to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual – 5 criteria. Data were analysed using SPSS data package.\u0000\u0000\u0000Results\u0000The mean age of the sample was 69.5 years. RBANS-S total scale correlated highly with MMSE total score, (Pearson correlational coefficient = 0.793 p=0.01). Criterion validity was assessed using receiver operating curve characteristic analysis and the area under the curve was 0.937. RBANS-S showed strong concurrent validity us indicated by its significant correlations with the MMSE. All of the RBANS-S subtests demonstrated significant correlations with the MMSE subsets. The sensitivity and specificity for RBANS-S was 89% and 85% respectively at a totals score of 80.5. The RBANS-S yielded a reliability coefficient of 0.929.\u0000\u0000\u0000Conclusions\u0000Culturally adapted RBANS-S is a valid and reliable instrument which can be used in assessment of cognitive functions.
