A high-density actuator array of touch stimulating pins actuated by shape memory alloys (SMAs) is controlled using a reduced number of control circuitry. In general, the proposed architecture is capable of driving an array of 2N2 actuators with only 3N control elements. Our preliminary prototype is an 8 x 8 pin matrix tactile display for the blind which consists of 128 actuators driven by only 24 switches. Several practical features of crossbar structures are discussed and an optimized method for scheduling the crossbar shared resources is presented to improve the overall performance","PeriodicalId":121329,"journal":{"name":"2006 IEEE International Symposium on MicroNanoMechanical and Human Science","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133612259","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The key technology to realizing practical microactuators is microfabrication process. In the production of microminiature components, the technologies for processing high-aspect-ratio structures are essential. As one of these technologies, the LIGA (German acronym for lithographite, galvanoformung and abformung) process is widely known. Our laboratory researches the LIGA process to three-dimensional microfabrication and established the cylindrical-micro coil production process. In this paper, we have fabricated the cylindrical-microcoil for to the solenoidal electromagnetic type microactuator. We designed and analyzed microactuators, and fabricated and evaluated microactuator coils produced by the combination of three-dimensional X-ray lithography and level copper plating. We succeeded in creating threaded groove-shaped structures (10 mum line width, 20 mum pitch, and aspect ratio of 5) on the surface of an acrylic pipe by means of three-dimensional X-ray lithography. The processing technology enables the formation of thin-wire coil lines whose current paths feature a large allowable current-carrying capacity, enabling the production of miniature, high-output microactuators","PeriodicalId":121329,"journal":{"name":"2006 IEEE International Symposium on MicroNanoMechanical and Human Science","volume":"20 5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115194581","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Irradiation, using a 1064 nm laser, of an aqueous solution mixed with poly-(N-isopropylacrylamide) through a high magnification lens resulted in the formation of a gel microbead at the laser focus due to heating. The gel microbead was trapped by the laser, and was used for indirect laser micromanipulation of microscale and nanoscale samples. Laser tweezers can typically handle a microscale object with size ranging from several tens of nm to several hundreds of mum in a stable manner. However, a nanoscale object with a size of a few nm cannot be stably manipulated, and laser beam heating is a major problem. This paper shows a method of indirect manipulation of microorganisms, DNA and viruses using a gel microbead made from the poly-(N-isopropylacrylamide) aqueous solution. We succeeded in reducing the laser power for gel microbead formation, and in using the laser-trapped gel microbead for the manipulation of microorganisms, DNA and viruses","PeriodicalId":121329,"journal":{"name":"2006 IEEE International Symposium on MicroNanoMechanical and Human Science","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117236843","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using this system, we measure the stiffness of human leukocyte and yeast cell. The micro finger is controlled by teleoperation under an optical microscope. The AFM cantilever is placed within the microscopic field. The micro finger approaches a target cell and holds it firmly using capillary phenomenon. Then the finger moves the cell to the AFM cantilever and presses it against the cantilever tip. Thus force is applied to the cell, and the cell is deformed. This pressing force is calculated from the measured defection of the cantilever tip. The deformation of the cell is obtained as the difference between the deflection of the cantilever tip and the moving distance of the micro finger tip. As a result we can obtain the force-deformation curve of the target cell; this curve represents its stiffness","PeriodicalId":121329,"journal":{"name":"2006 IEEE International Symposium on MicroNanoMechanical and Human Science","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131067920","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The new haptic interface termed active polyhedron is devised. Active polyhedron can display force on multi-point, making this device realize operation to complex continuum. In this report, the active icosahedron, which is one of active polyhedron and pneumatically-driven, is developed. The active icosahedron consists of 30 pneumatic cylinders which have position sensor. In previous research, position-control algorithm and force-control algorithm were reported. Position-control algorithm computes positions of active icosahedron's apex based on displacements of link-length. Force-control algorithm computes output-forces on cylinder based on output-forces on apexes. Applying these algorithms, active icosahedron can realize input-position and output-force. We develop a new type of an application, which is 3D-CAD/CAM operation. In this application, an operator can perform advanced-design to generate commonly used CAD/CAM data, using the active icosahedron. At the same time, the operator feels stiffness of the model as if he touches to it. As a result, finer and more complex design is able to be performed","PeriodicalId":121329,"journal":{"name":"2006 IEEE International Symposium on MicroNanoMechanical and Human Science","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116620541","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A primary cell culture prepared from a newborn rat was cultivated and continuously observed using microscopy. It was observed that the cells start to form small clusters, and then form a network of clusters, which was generated on a timescale of one week. It was found that addition of an agent that suppresses the beating motion of cardiac cells results in inhibition of the cluster formation. From these observations, it is concluded that the mechanical tension owing to the beating motion of cardiac cells drives the formation of clusters. Furthermore, we show that substrates affect the orientations of cells and the cluster formation, through experiments using collagen gel substrates. On the basis of experimental results, we propose a hypothesis concerning the mechanism of cluster formation","PeriodicalId":121329,"journal":{"name":"2006 IEEE International Symposium on MicroNanoMechanical and Human Science","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121705294","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
