The signals from such air guns have the potential to travel to far distances and cause annoyance, discomfort or damage to, for instance, sea mammals. Effects could range from mild irritation through impairment of foraging or disruption of social interactions to hearing loss and in extreme cases physical injury or death. It is therefore of considerable interest to have tools for the predictions of long range sound propagation of air gun signals to use in the planning and execution of surveys. In this paper we will describe a new environmental impact analysis model for the prediction of the level and other characteristics of emitted man made acoustic noise in the sea. The main element of the model is an acoustic ray-tracing propagation program, called PlaneRay, which can treat range dependent bathymetry and take into account reflection loss from a layered sea floor with fluid and elastic layers. The sound source in the propagation model can be any transient acoustic waveform, for instance a recorded acoustic signature of an air gun. The model will then propagate the source signal out to a range of several kilometers and calculate the sound level as function of frequency for a large frequency band, typically 1000 Hz. The model will also calculate the complete broad-band time response of the received signal and thereby calculate important parameters, such as the peak-to-peak acoustic pressure amplitude, rms pressure level and time duration of the received signal. The main features of the model are described and examples of predicting long range propagation of an air gun signature under different oceanic conditions are shown.","PeriodicalId":120840,"journal":{"name":"Europe Oceans 2005","volume":"103 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121347588","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In these conditions the global search effort is transferred to the classification function by reducing the number of pointless false detection alarms, i.e. by classifying a NOMBO as a non mine like contact (NON MILCO). This paper then aims at giving demonstrative results and means to perform automatic classification while keeping low false classification rate. The considered method is divided into two steps: a first coarse long range pre-classification only provides relevant mine like echoes (MILEC) to be then processed by a shorter range classification. The false alarm reduction of the first step is performed with a long range detection sonar by analysing the echo signal structure and its evolution given the sonar motion. Then, the second step is image based classification and needs a high frequency classification sonar to provide a more detailed acoustic image of the object (especially concerning its cast shadow shape).","PeriodicalId":120840,"journal":{"name":"Europe Oceans 2005","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115781680","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A chain of three nested models based on the MARS-3D code is used to simulate the Northwestern Mediterranean Sea circulation. This modeling network allows to resolve the GoL dynamics taking into account the influence of the general basin circulation (Northern Current). A good qualitative agreement between Chl and modeled salinity fields was generally obtained. From SeaWiFS images and according to the model results, the Rho/spl circ/ne water masses can follow the coasts to the west of the river mouth or can be expelled southward in the western part of the GoL. Along the continental slope, the Northern Current (NC) channels the Rho/spl circ/ne river dispersion plume up to the Catalan coasts. In bloom condition the localization of the oligotrophic vein corresponds accurately to the NC position. Small scale dynamics observed on chlorophyll fields are generally reproduced by the model. However they can be misplaced on MARS-3D results because of the difficulties to simulate these small scale processes and the too coarse resolution of wind forcing. Finally, the quantitative pixel/pixel comparisons between the Chl fields and the computed surface salinity fields show a high scattering due to the misplacement of features. Nevertheless, two clear trends was observed, corresponding to the southwestward and the along coast direction of the Rho/spl circ/ne river plume.","PeriodicalId":120840,"journal":{"name":"Europe Oceans 2005","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116591590","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The technology demonstrator is located offshore Catania. In the final configuration, future detectors will be occupying a cube having one kilometre in all dimensions. The system composed of up to 5 seabed synchronous beacons and a number of acoustic digital receivers mounted inside the pressure housings will offer a sub-metric accuracy. Delivery of the system will take place in 2005. For this application, ACSA Underwater GPS, INFN partner, will introduce a new technology known as Time Spectral Spread Codes, \"TSSC\". In this numerical scheme, the three-dimensional viscous flow around an advancing ship is computed by the finite-difference method, the viscous flow is simulated for ships of a displacement type and the free surface effects are neglected. The governing equations are the Navier-Stokes equations and the continuity equation for the three-dimensional incompressible fluid. The body-fitted curvilinear coordinates system is introduced to cope with the body boundary of an arbitrary form. Assuming symmetricity of a flow field, only the half side of the center plane is solved. The computational region in the physical space is transformed into the parallelepiped in the computational space. The body boundary is usually transformed onto a plane in the computational space, which enables the simple treatment of boundary conditions. Viscous flows around a variant hull of the Wigley model are computed by the present scheme. In order to investigate the influences of dimensional and movement parameters of the ship on pressure distributions in sea water, the following parameters were varied systematically: the model speed, the main dimensions of the model, and the displacement, respectively, the model length, the value of the block coefficient, the value of the longitudinal prismatic coefficient and the value of the ratio of breadth to depth.","PeriodicalId":120840,"journal":{"name":"Europe Oceans 2005","volume":"174 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121482901","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is an appropriate spatial resolution for current map products in Ports and Harbours and around natural or built headland features. The design parameters for the new PortMap radar are discussed and sample data are shown using an early prototype for a narrow tidal inlet with a shipping channel and mudflats on each side. We show that eddy structures develop in the ebb flow which have special consequences for sediment transport in the alongshore direction across the mouth of the inlet. A second case study is shown where an alongshore current interacts with a headland to produce a recirculation of water on the leeward side. In both cases the 100 m spatial scale of the data points gives a well-sampled image for surface current.","PeriodicalId":120840,"journal":{"name":"Europe Oceans 2005","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125318084","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to get better classification reliability, we propose to use complementarity between sidescan sonar images and a digital elevation models (DEM). The new feature is that the sonar (Klein), provides a high resolution sidescan sonar image which pixels are colocated with high resolution interferometric points. After extracting information from each of the two sources, the key point is to fuse them to be able to classify the seabed. We propose to compare three fusion approaches: two signal-level fusion based on multidimensional classification algorithms, and a symbol-level fusion based on the Dempster-Shafer evidence theory. These methods are tested on real sonar data.","PeriodicalId":120840,"journal":{"name":"Europe Oceans 2005","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125230828","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This method uses both acoustic diffraction and bottom backscattering coefficients. Firstly, we present the acoustic sensor and its geometry. When dimensions of the aperture of the transducer are not very large in comparison with the sound wavelength, diffraction must be taken into account in the estimation of beam geometry. We determine the beam geometry by application of the Huygens-Fresnel principle. We explain how the shape and dimensions of its aperture will influence the diffraction of the acoustic beam (diffraction patterns are presented). We also detail the bottom backscattering properties and their influence on the backscattered acoustic energy of main and secondary beams. In the second part, we introduce a new method aiming to extract seabed features from the received acoustic echo. This method is based on the shape of the received acoustic echo and aims to work out the seabed slope. In the last part, we present results obtained during simulations and during experimentations conducted in the open sea.","PeriodicalId":120840,"journal":{"name":"Europe Oceans 2005","volume":"840 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123022365","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

COCMP is the first large-scale, integrated, high frequency radar system and, as such, a candidate component for the proposed national Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS: http://www.ocean.us/). HF radar is an efficient and economically viable initial step in creation of an observing technology capable of providing a range of products. Its applications include water quality management, oil spill response, marine protected area development, marine and anadromous fisheries management, and search and rescue operations. Developing a functional surface currents monitoring program in a state as large, environmentally diverse, and politically fragmented as California is a test of creating institutional linkages and communications where none exist. Creating timely and useful products to serve resource management agency, NGO, and industry constituencies requires dedicated outreach and educational tools, a challenge that is as important as the technical design. The authors review COCMP technical design, outreach, integration, and applications.","PeriodicalId":120840,"journal":{"name":"Europe Oceans 2005","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132634373","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
