First texture features are extracted from a side scan image containing two distinct regions. A region based active contour model of Chan and Vese [2000] is then applied to the vector valued images extracted from the original data. The set of features considered is the Haralick feature set based on the cooccurrence matrix. To improve computational efficiency the extraction of the Haralick feature set is implemented by using sum and difference histograms as proposed by Unser [1989]. Our implementation includes an automatic feature selection step used to readjust the weights attached to each feature in the curve evolution equation that drives the segmentation. Results are shown on simulated and real data. The influence of the algorithm parameters and contour initialisation are analysed.","PeriodicalId":120840,"journal":{"name":"Europe Oceans 2005","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128774561","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective being to operate at very low SNRs in shallow water (to achieve furtive transmissions) and with the need of a limited computational cost, the implementation relies on the Unscented Kalman Filter, which is known to be more robust than the popular Extended Kalman Filter. The proposed receiver schemes are discussed and compared using experimental data.","PeriodicalId":120840,"journal":{"name":"Europe Oceans 2005","volume":"95 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115939921","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The authors' technique, based on a level set formulation of the path planning problem, extracts optimal paths from complex and continuous environments in a complete and consistent manner. Fast marching algorithm is known to be efficient for finding cost optimal path in mobile robotics because of its reliability, precision, and simple implementation. Fast marching algorithm originally propagates a wave front to isotropically explore the space. We propose an anisotropic version of fast marching by adding directional constraints in a cost function to minimize. We then propose a path planning method able to deal with vectorial fields of force for the first time. Furthermore we explore the relation between the curvature of the optimal path and the cost function generated from scalar and vectorial constraints. This a priori knowledge of the influence of the environment on the final path's curvature allows us to propose a solution to make sure a path is reachable by the vehicle according to its kinematics. A multi-resolution scheme based on an adaptive mesh generation is eventually introduced to speed up the overall algorithm. Results are shown computed from real and simulated underwater environments.","PeriodicalId":120840,"journal":{"name":"Europe Oceans 2005","volume":"72 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116657371","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Now scientists are demanding highly reliable autonomous equipment capable of staying underwater for long periods of time and therefore handling large data storage. Power consumption of the acquisition system as well as a stable time base with temperature are the main issues in order to achieve high autonomy together with a good data quality. This paper presents a new OBS designed to be used in marine long term surveys. To achieve our goals, a new datalogger based on Compactflash memories with high data transfer capacity is designed to enable continuous data acquisition. The equipment is now under evaluation where lab tests have been carried out and tests under real environmental conditions are programmed for second semester of 2005.","PeriodicalId":120840,"journal":{"name":"Europe Oceans 2005","volume":"2017 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116200113","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper deals with a generalization of dense stereo reconstruction, which forms the basis for incremental fusing of stereo sequences to construct a 3-D model of underwater natural objects. The approach is fast and robust. Initialized with a set of robust feature matches over the left and right images, efficient left-to-right and right-to-left stereo matching are carried out by match propagation [Q. Chen, G. Medioni, 1999]. Symmetry relation between the two stereo matchings is utilized to guide robust fusion. Where a large difference exists between the two dense stereo reconstructions, it is most probable that at least one estimate is erroneous, thus is rejected. Conversely, small differences are expected because of the discrete nature of the disparity values. When fused these two estimates, better results are expected. Experimental results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed approach.","PeriodicalId":120840,"journal":{"name":"Europe Oceans 2005","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125465568","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The height estimate is generated using a maximum likelihood (ML) estimate combining the data from the hydrophones. To decrease the effect of the large variance of the phase difference estimates the broadband signal is divided into smaller subbands and combined to give a height estimate with much improved accuracy, albeit at a reduced resolution due to the reduction in system bandwidth. Results are shown for a two element sonar, and the improvement obtained using multiple frequency bands subbanded to give a lower variance in the height estimate. Multiple pings are also combined as multiple looks, further reducing the height variance.","PeriodicalId":120840,"journal":{"name":"Europe Oceans 2005","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125599977","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The system uses high-rate (5000 bps) acoustic modems that are power-efficient (on order 1000 bits per joule) to telemeter data from an ocean bottom seismometer and a sensor monitoring a cold seep site near the Nootka fault. The buoy includes a Linux-based embedded controller, the modem base station and meteorological sensors. Data is off-loaded from the buoy using ftp, and remote login capability allows the acoustic communication schedule to be modified when instruments are added or removed from the network. The system has been operational for one year, typically transferring more than 500 Kbytes of data per day from two seafloor instruments.","PeriodicalId":120840,"journal":{"name":"Europe Oceans 2005","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126805343","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sequential detection and estimation techniques offer distinct advantages over batch methods. A reasonable signal processing approach to solve this class of problem is to employ adaptive or parametrically adaptive signal models and noise to capture these phenomena. In this paper, we develop a sequential approach to solve the signal detection problem in a nonstationary environment.","PeriodicalId":120840,"journal":{"name":"Europe Oceans 2005","volume":"54 5-6","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121005865","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These experiments are usually carried out by off-line processing of data recorded in real channels. In this paper, we present a new simulation and rapid prototyping environment called the reconfigurable modem (rModem). The transducer design is novel in that it utilizes a commercial focusing-bowl piezo element as a convex curved radiator in order to achieve a wide-angled beam profile. The operating frequency of the piezo sensor has been selected to have a short wavelength in water yielding good range resolution. The dimensions of the experimental transducer are small and power consumption is low. It is proposed to use several sensors together with overlapping detection cones to build a sensing system that can provide useful information about objects in an AUV's environment. The principle advantages of such a sensing approach are that it would provide fast detection and location of close range targets and could be implemented with less hardware complexity and signal processing than a typical phased-array sonar approach thus reducing the overall system cost. The sound-pressure distribution, ultrasonic sensitivity, and pulse-echo acoustic performance of the transducer prototype are discussed. Water tank testing carried out to evaluate the acoustic response of the prototype in detecting various dimensioned reflectors in the laboratory is reported.","PeriodicalId":120840,"journal":{"name":"Europe Oceans 2005","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124253903","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
