Several countries, serving remote communities, have a large number of unsustainable remote microgrids with high operating costs and low continuity and quality of service to end consumers. A way to improve the sustainability of the MGRs through their digitization using measurement, communications and systems is presented. This allows monitoring, supervision and control of the generation assets and its networks and loads. The digitization implements an economic operation of the generation resources, including distributed renewable energy resources (DERs), gradually normalizing the collection of revenues supporting the fulfillment of supplying electricity to everyone, one of the objectives of the United Nations for the sustainable development.","PeriodicalId":120262,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference - Latin America (ISGT Latin America)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125106820","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Brazil, the penetration of wind energy represents ~ 11 % of the country's generation capacity, currently explored in continental areas. Although offshore wind projects are in the environmental licensing phase, the country lacks coastal and offshore observations performed at height of modern wind turbines. Atmospheric models have been a valuable tool for the assessing the potential and distribution of offshore wind power. Some reanalysis present hourly datasets with long time record and global coverage. Here the ERA5 atmospheric reanalysis of ECMWF is compared to hub height wind observations of three locations in Brazil. The first is derived from a coastal meteorological tower located on Alcantara Launch Center in the state of Maranhão (MA- Tower). The second is derived from LIDAR observations of a coastal pier in Santa Catarina (SC-LIDAR). The last are tall tower observations performed by a Petrobras oil platform located in Santos Basin (Tower-PETRO). The temporal characteristics of the winds at these locations are explored and compared to ERA5. Power generation is simulated considering a 8 MW offshore wind turbine. Results demonstrate that ERA5 is well suited for daily to monthly scale analysis of wind speeds. The model spatial resolution, however, precludes a close representation of the diurnal variability in locations where the sea breeze is an important component of the circulation. Power simulations demonstrated good results for all ERA5 comparisons.","PeriodicalId":120262,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference - Latin America (ISGT Latin America)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127766228","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Commonly, these communities are home to first nations and face resource deprivation in the supply of natural gas and electricity. Meanwhile, the United Nations have created goals to overcome these challenges, and they have been adopted by many governmental entities across the world. These have the potential to significantly enhance the vantage point of their dwellers. This paper investigates diesel reduction options in an isolated community in Canada. Load composition plays a large role and a method is proposed to estimate it. With this estimation in hand, the effect of options to reduce technical losses and energy production is quantified. The recommendations from this research were used to drive a voltage conversion project and a Conservation Voltage Reduction implementation in a real life minigrid.","PeriodicalId":120262,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference - Latin America (ISGT Latin America)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130434855","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Demand presents challenging to predict behavior, which means that usually, the balance is corrected through changes in a generation. The operators rely on generation plants that must keep 3% of their power available for regulation. With the increase in electric vehicles (EV) and the growing vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology, the frequency regulation service could be supplemented and mitigated by generators. This research aims to analyze the viability and feasibility of the use of V2G technology as a complementary service to primary frequency regulation. The battery model of electric vehicles with the necessary components for its operation in V2G was simulated using the PowerFactory DIgSILENT software. A single bank with all the power connected to a system Monte Carlo simulation of a single bank was carried out with all the power connected to a system bus to simulate the entire fleet of electric vehicle batteries and know how much power was always available. The results obtained in the simulations show that theso of the EVs in the primary frequency regulation does not allow sudden changes in frequency in the electrical system.","PeriodicalId":120262,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference - Latin America (ISGT Latin America)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115984684","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The affine shapes for tree-phase variables was performed using the theoretical approach of Reduced Affine Arithmetic together with the Chebyshev approximation method for non-affine operations. The stochastic mathematical model is formulated into as an equivalent optimization problem through a set of affine operators to later be solved by a two-stage stochastic optimization problem. Two three-phase distribution systems 19-bus and 25-bus are used to show the effectiveness of the proposed methodology.","PeriodicalId":120262,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference - Latin America (ISGT Latin America)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131574296","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

DG benefits the distribution system by reducing losses and improving the energy quality and reliability of the system, in addition to the greenhouse gases reduction. The problem of dimensioning and allocating DGs is important since their installation in nonoptimal places can result in increased system losses and operation costs. This article presents a method for optimal allocation and dimensioning of DGs to reduce total losses in the power distribution feeders. The solution technique uses the greedy randomized adaptive search procedure together (GRASP) with tabu search. Results under a real-world distribution system shows the efficiency of the proposed methodology.","PeriodicalId":120262,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference - Latin America (ISGT Latin America)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130756309","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
