However, the number of PSIISs that can be configured is often limited. It is necessary to comprehensively utilize the measurement data and sectional capabilities of PSIISs through the optimal configuration method to find the optimal configuration scheme. Therefore, fault observability-related indexes (FORIs) are proposed based on the functional characteristics of PSIISs. These indexes include fault type observability, fault location observability, fault current distribution characteristics observability, transition resistance observability, and weak infrastructure area observability. An optimization configuration model of PSIISs considering the comprehensive fault observability (CFO) is constructed. The adaptive genetic algorithm (AGA) is selected as the model-solving method. Subsequently, an optimal configuration method of PSIISs considering CFO is proposed. Finally, an example analysis is conducted in MATLAB to verify the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed method. This optimal configuration method aims to maximize the use of a limited number of PSIISs by considering CFO, and the AGA proves to be an effective tool in solving the optimal configuration scheme.","PeriodicalId":11557,"journal":{"name":"Energies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":3.0,"publicationDate":"2024-08-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141921796","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Malaysia has shown great progress in the adoption of photovoltaic systems thanks to its plentiful solar resources. On the other hand, energy storage systems (ESSs) are becoming more and more necessary in order to guarantee grid stability and fully realize the benefits of PV systems. This study attempts to assess the current condition of PV installations in Malaysia with an emphasis on their economic feasibility, regulatory compliance, technological capabilities, and compatibility with various energy storage technologies. Malaysian photovoltaic (PV) systems’ readiness to integrate energy storage systems (ESSs) using second-life electric vehicle batteries (SLEVBs) is examined in this article. Integrating PV systems with SLEVBs in residential ESSs shows economic viability, with a 15-year payback and 25% return on investment (ROI). Therefore, for every 1 MW of installed PV capacity, with ESS integration it is estimated to reduce approximately 3504 metric tons of CO2 emissions annually in Malaysia. The homeowner benefits from large electricity bill savings, net metering revenue, and various incentives or financing alternatives that make the project financially attractive despite the extended payback time. Energy storage solutions are needed to improve grid stability, energy usage, and solar power generation in Malaysia as renewable energy adoption increases. Reusing retired EV batteries for stationary storage could solve environmental and economic issues. This study examines the feasibility, regulatory frameworks, and economic viability of combining second-life EV batteries with PV installations in Malaysia.","PeriodicalId":11557,"journal":{"name":"Energies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":3.0,"publicationDate":"2024-08-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141921627","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study investigates the dynamics of CO2 dispersion from pipeline systems, assessing not only the transport process but also the physical properties and associated hazards. Advanced simulation techniques are used to model how different states of CO2 (gas, liquid, and supercritical) and varying pipeline characteristics—such as perforation sizes, flow rates, and orientations—affect the dispersion patterns in the event of a leak. Simulations cover a range of atmospheric conditions, emphasizing the role of atmospheric stability and wind speed in shaping dispersion and defining potential impact zones. An analysis of historical pipeline accidents is included to inform risk management strategies. The results show that the orientation of the pipeline has a significant effect on dispersion, with downward leaks causing the largest impact zones, particularly under supercritical conditions. The results highlight the need for adaptive safety strategies that take into account real-time CO2 transport conditions and localized environmental data. By integrating these factors, the study recommends refining safety protocols and emergency response strategies to improve pipeline resilience and public safety against potential leaks. Key findings include the quantification of the relationship between leak parameters and dispersion areas, providing a valuable framework for future safety improvements.","PeriodicalId":11557,"journal":{"name":"Energies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":3.0,"publicationDate":"2024-08-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141925292","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Significant research on LTC using partially premixed charge compression ignition (PPCI) has typically reduced the compression ratio of the engine to control combustion phasing and lower peak temperatures. This study investigates LTC using PPCI with a high-compression-ratio (=21.2) engine by varying fuel injection timing (FIT) from 12.5° to 30.0° before top dead center (BTDC) while modulating EGR (0%, 7%, 14%, and 25%). Advancing FIT led to a gradual rise in the equivalence ratio of the mixture, in-cylinder pressure, temperature, and rate of heat release due to energy losses associated with ignition occurring before the end of the compression stroke. PPCI was successfully achieved with minimal performance impact using a combination of FIT advancements in the presence of high rates of EGR. Specifically, fuel injected at 25.0° BTDC and 25% EGR reduced PM emissions by 59% and total hydrocarbons by 25% compared with conventional FIT (12.5°) without EGR. Moreover, carbon monoxide and NOx emissions were comparable across set points. As a result, PPCI using high compression ratios is possible and can lead to greater thermal efficiencies while reducing emissions.","PeriodicalId":11557,"journal":{"name":"Energies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":3.0,"publicationDate":"2024-08-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141921857","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We use a geostatistical approach integrated with Python scripting to analyze reservoir parameters—including porosity, permeability, thickness, lithology, temperature, heat capacity, and thermal conductivity—from a decommissioned hydrocarbon field in Southeast Hungary. Our workflow leverages stochastic simulation data to identify potential zones for energy storage, categorizing them into high-, moderate-, and low-suitability scenarios. This innovative approach provides rapid and precise analysis, enabling effective decision-making for energy storage implementation in depleted fields. In recent years, the sandwiched shale oil in the fourth member of the Shahejie Formation in the Liaohe Western Depression area of the Bohai Bay Basin has shown great exploration potential, while the understanding of shale oil content and the movability of shale oil is weak. In this study, through a combination of core observations and experiments, we clarified the shale lithofacies types in the fourth member of the Shahejie Formation in the Liaohe Western Depression and explored the influencing factors of the characteristics in the oil-bearing and movability of shales in different lithofacies. The results of the study show that the organic matter content of the shale is high (TOC = 2.2–4.3%), but the maturity of thermal evolution is low (Ro = 0.38–0.55%), and the mineral component is dominated by clay minerals (30.3–72.7%), with quartz, feldspar, and other feldspar minerals developing secondarily. According to the content of organic matter, the mineral component, and the sedimentary structure, five types of lithofacies can be classified: organic-rich laminated clay-bearing felsic shale lithofacies (LS1), organic-rich laminated clay felsic mixed shale lithofacies (LS2), organic-rich layered clay felsic mixed shale lithofacies (LS3), organic-containing massive felsic-bearing clay shale lithofacies (LS4), and organic-containing massive clay felsic mixed shale lithofacies (LS5). The oil content of shale is mainly affected by the organic matter. The rate of increase in oil content of shale is fastest when the organic matter content is between 2 and 4%. The movability of shale oil is mainly controlled by the sedimentary structure, mineral component, and microscopic pore structure; the more the shale laminae is developed, the lower the clay content is, and the more the pore space is developed, the better the movability of shale oil is. Combined with the results of the shale oil content and mobility analysis in the study area, LS2 and LS3 are the dominant lithofacies in the fourth member of the Shahejie Formation in the study area, followed by LS1 >LS5 >LS4, so shale oil exploration should focus on the development of LS2 and LS3.","PeriodicalId":11557,"journal":{"name":"Energies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":3.0,"publicationDate":"2024-08-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141925592","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

CCUS, as one of the technologies to achieve carbon neutrality, has received widespread attention from academia and industry. After CO2 enters the formation, under the conditions of formation temperature and pressure, supercritical CO2, formation water, and rock components interact, which directly affects the oil and gas recovery and carbon sequestration efficiency. In this paper, the recent progress on CO2 water–rock interaction was reviewed from three aspects, including (i) the investigation methods of CO2 water–rock interaction; (ii) the variable changes of key minerals, pore structure, and physical properties; and (iii) the nomination of suitable reservoirs for CO2 geological sequestration. The review obtains the following three understandings: (1) Physical simulation and cross-time scale numerical simulation based on formation temperature and pressure conditions are important research methods for CO2 water–rock interaction. High-precision mineral-pore in situ comparison and physical property evolution evaluation are important development directions. (2) Sensitive minerals in CO2 water–rock interaction mainly include dolomite, calcite, anhydrite, feldspar, kaolinite, and chlorite. Due to the differences in simulated formation conditions or geological backgrounds, these minerals generally show the pattern of dissolution or precipitation or dissolution before precipitation. This differential evolution leads to complex changes in pore structure and physical properties. (3) To select the suitable reservoir for sequestration, it is necessary to confirm the sequestration potential of the reservoir and the later sequestration capacity, and then select the appropriate layer and well location to start CO2 injection. At the same time, these processes can be optimized by CO2 water–rock interaction research. This review aims to provide scientific guidance and technical support for shale oil recovery and carbon sequestration by introducing the mechanism of CO2 water–rock interaction, expounding the changes of key minerals, pore structure, and physical properties, and summarizing the sequestration scheme.","PeriodicalId":11557,"journal":{"name":"Energies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":3.0,"publicationDate":"2024-08-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141926251","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For these reasons, the main goal of this article is to determine whether and to what extent autarky influenced prosumers’ decisions about the use of solar energy in households, and which promotional channels play the most important role in these decisions. An assessment of the role of autarky and promotion from the prosumer perspective on the photovoltaics market is carried out on the example of Poland as a developing economy, based on the dominant share of coal in energy production. The implementation of this goal will enable recognition and better understanding of prosumers’ intentions and attitudes, and thus more effective stimulation of the green transformation. Surveys in this area were carried out on a representative sample of 754 Polish prosumers, and were analyzed using descriptive statistics and non-parametric statistical tests. The obtained results demonstrate a strong need for energy independence among prosumers (50%) and confirm the role of this motive in the green transformation process. Respondents consider the Internet (a score of 3.8793 on a 5-point suitability scale) and information from companies installing photovoltaic installations (a score of 3.6645 on a 5-point suitability scale) to be the most effective sources of promoting photovoltaics. The example and opinion of family and friends are also important to them. Government campaigns (a score of 2.8647 on a 5-point suitability scale), television and the press play a much smaller role in the popularization of solar energy. Respondents, therefore, prefer numerous and dispersed marketing sources, that allow them to confront and verify the information obtained.","PeriodicalId":11557,"journal":{"name":"Energies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":3.0,"publicationDate":"2024-08-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141929094","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A custom-built high-pressure combustor was designed and manufactured at the Low Carbon Combustion Centre (LCCC) of the University of Sheffield to investigate the impact of different aromatic hydrocarbons on emission rates. The research involved the comprehensive testing of Jet−A1 fuel and six aromatic species blends under high-pressure conditions of 10 bar. Based on the numerical CFD simulations by ANSYS 19.2, tangential dual air injection and a strategically placed V-shaped baffle plate were utilised to enhance fuel-air mixing and combustion stability. Experimental results demonstrated a negative correlation between combustion temperature and particulate matter (PM) emissions, with higher temperatures yielding lower PM emissions. Unburned hydrocarbons (UHCs), nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions were also analysed. Ethylbenzene produced the highest UHC and CO emissions, while Indane exhibited the lowest levels of these pollutants, suggesting more complete combustion. O−xylene generated the highest NOx emissions, correlating with its higher combustion temperatures. This research enhances our understanding of gas turbine combustor design and the combustion behaviour of aromatic species, providing valuable insights for developing low-emission, high-efficiency gas turbine combustion technologies.","PeriodicalId":11557,"journal":{"name":"Energies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":3.0,"publicationDate":"2024-08-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141928821","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
