Google Classroom, Compass, Office 365, EdQuire, ClassDojo and Canvas are just some of the many platforms that litter students’ and teachers’ computers today. While students may have only one school to physically attend, there is a labyrinth of digital enclosures for them to navigate as part of their schooling. The rise of digital platforms in education has occurred at an erratic rate—sometimes through function creep, sometimes through whole system mandates, and certainly the global pandemic has accelerated their rise. In this article we consider how platforms have become an infrastructure in education and the implications this has for teaching, learning and the relationships between key stakeholders. We provide an overview of the education research into platforms to date, highlighting areas that require further empirical and theoretical investigation. We conclude the article by outlining a research agenda for critical platform studies in education.","PeriodicalId":11429,"journal":{"name":"Education Policy Analysis Archives","volume":"2 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2023-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139007737","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A pesar de su rápida implementación en sistemas educativos de países muy diversos, aún disponemos de poca evidencia sobre cuáles son los factores y las razones que explican la adopción de plataformas digitales de grandes corporaciones tecnológicas en los sistemas educativos públicos. Partiendo de la teoría de la Economía Política Cultural, la presente investigación tiene por objetivo analizar el proceso de adopción de políticas de digitalización de la educación en Cataluña. A nivel metodológico, el estudio se basa en el análisis del discurso de entrevistas semiestructuradas a policymakers, activistas, expertos, responsables de grandes corporaciones tecnológicas y stakeholders. Los resultados muestran cómo la combinación de palancas de cambio ideacionales y materiales en diferentes momentos contribuye a explicar la forma cómo las plataformas digitales han permeado el sistema educativo. En particular, destaca la falta de liderazgo público, que contrasta con el rol protagónico de corporaciones globales como Google en el proceso político. Asimismo, el análisis ilumina las limitaciones del proceso de plataformización de la educación y la desvinculación entre arquitectura tecnológica y pedagogía que se observa en su implementación.","PeriodicalId":11429,"journal":{"name":"Education Policy Analysis Archives","volume":"91 9","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2023-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139008313","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Este artículo presenta los resultados de un estudio cuyo objetivo fue identificar y analizar los principales aspectos que generan tensiones en los discursos de tres grupos de interés con respecto al uso de plataformas digitales comerciales en los centros educativos de Cataluña (España). A partir de una investigación cualitativa, se realizaron entrevistas en profundidad a seis directivos de escuelas, cuatro representantes de la administración pública y tres representantes de grandes corporaciones tecnológicas. A continuación, se llevó a cabo un análisis del discurso relacional que permitió categorizar los resultados en las siguientes tres áreas: (1) servicios y productos de las plataformas digitales comerciales; (2) usos de las plataformas digitales comerciales en el sistema educativo; y (3) gestión y uso de datos por parte de las plataformas digitales comerciales en el sistema educativo. Los resultados resaltan la necesidad de una mayor participación por parte de la administración pública para garantizar un uso seguro de estos recursos digitales en las escuelas y proteger los derechos de la infancia.","PeriodicalId":11429,"journal":{"name":"Education Policy Analysis Archives","volume":"11 25","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2023-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138977050","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

También revisamos los ensamblajes que se configuran en las escuelas cuando contemplamos la convivencia entre plataformas, redes, aplicaciones, junto con otros dispositivos que componen la infraestructura escolar desde hace más largo tiempo, como son los registros en soporte impreso. Para llevar adelante este estudio, adoptamos una perspectiva etnográfica capaz de dar cuenta de los fenómenos del escenario postdigital en su dimensión situada, en tensión y siempre más opaca y cambiante de lo que presumen algunos antecedentes del campo. Con el fin de indagar acerca de las prácticas y valoraciones que los docentes plantean en relación con las plataformas digitales que se utilizan cotidianamente en la escuela, nos hemos valido de instancias de observación y registro de clases, entrevistas con docentes de distintas disciplinas, y ejercicios de walkthrough. In a kid’s culture that values documenting and sharing with parents, social media and instant messaging are widely used. Educators feel overloaded with the challenges posed by digital platforms, but contextual issues are relevant to finding ways for resistance and engagement in political actions to transform the edtech platforms’ dominance. Investigating the specific discourses and approaches to platformisation from early education professionals appears relevant to promoting not only awareness but also ways to rethink professional and political agency. Our preliminary study is based on 14 individual interviews and one group interview with educators in the Italian region of Veneto. The results of our thematic analysis indicate that achieving a balance between technology-based documentation and children’s privacy is not straightforward. Also, educators are calling for policies and further support for technology-driven services and activities that make thoughtful and conscious use of technology to avoid harming children. On these bases, we advance recommendations to deepen early childhood educators’ professional development requirements in a data-driven and post-digital society.\u0000 ","PeriodicalId":11429,"journal":{"name":"Education Policy Analysis Archives","volume":"22 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2023-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139009195","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our main hypothesis is that the digital leap, in the New Mexican School that emerged from the last educational reform, has considerably modified the methods of educational governance, the pedagogical processes in schooling, and the ways of communication between schools and families, with implications for children’s rights. The objective is to identify, from the stakeholders’ perspectives, the effects of the growing importance of BigTech corporations in Mexico and of the expansion of digital capitalism, which deepened as an effect of school closures due to the pandemic, and to analyze the results from the gender perspective. The research methodology is qualitative based on in-depth interviews with policymakers and a survey of 70 school principals, teachers, and families from the five educational regions of the country. Our main research objective is to explore the perceptions, experiences, and opinions of women and men in urban and rural environments about the changes experienced since the pandemic in terms of digital transition and to identify the benefits and constraints of using DEP in schooling contexts.","PeriodicalId":11429,"journal":{"name":"Education Policy Analysis Archives","volume":"67 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2023-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139006593","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article explores the normative emergence of being a student, a parent, and a teacher in the use of parents’ WhatsApp groups. In Chile, this digital application is widely used by the population, and it is particularly important for school communities. Based on interviews conducted with teachers and parents, and a theoretical approach based on science and technology studies, the results show that students are constantly labeled as “good” or “bad” without nuance, which produces stereotypes, and parents are also labeled in a binary way, with one group of alarmists and one of relaxed parents, where counter criticisms emerge, while teachers are seen as an extension of the schools and are expected to be constantly present. Digital communication technologies mediate these interactions and open up a new level of interaction, with standards and meanings enabled by the features of the application. We discuss these results, emphasizing that the normativities of these becomings are intertwined in the digital sphere, and using a mapping visualization of the analysis, we show how normativity acts ubiquitously and produces constantly changing expectations of how one should be for those in the group. The mapping exercise shows that the main relationship between the three becomings is emotion, so we conclude that, on the understanding that affect exceeds individuality and represents intensities online, normativities are also incorporated as affective responses in the parents’ WhatsApp group.","PeriodicalId":11429,"journal":{"name":"Education Policy Analysis Archives","volume":"26 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2023-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139009618","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Las tecnologías digitales se presentan como un actor nuevo en las situaciones educativas, con potencial para definir escenarios educativos más flexibles y personalizables, que parecen facilitar el acceso universal y el tratamiento diferencial que la equidad e igualdad de oportunidades exige. Sin embargo, la idea de “equidad” nos sitúa en un plano de reflexión circunscrito a la justicia distributiva que implica una concepción de lo educativo como un “bien a distribuir” que puede conducir a instrumentalizar las relaciones educativo-pedagógicas, subsumiéndolas a intereses económicos o políticos, pervirtiéndolas. En este sentido, conviene recuperar la idea de educación como requisito de justicia, ya presente en Platón, vinculada a la idea de desarrollo ético del educando, y del denominado “cuidado de sí” desarrollado por Foucault. En definitiva, para desplegar el prometedor potencial educativo de los nuevos escenarios educativos, basados en plataformas digitales, estas deben no sólo garantizar la justicia distributiva (equidad) sino, sobre todo, la justicia formativa.","PeriodicalId":11429,"journal":{"name":"Education Policy Analysis Archives","volume":"16 13","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2023-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139009541","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
