In an attempt to unpack the strongest motivators for rural Americans who voted for Trump, analyses explored the importance of anti-immigrant and anti-elite sentiment using a subset of rural participants in the 2016 American National Elections Study. Through a combination of quantitative data work, qualitative case studies and an extensive literature review, it was found that both anti-immigrant and anti-elite sentiments are indicators of a vote for Trump. However, the research and analyses suggest anti-immigrant sentiment is a stronger indicator. 1 Johnson: Immigrants or Elites? Although the pomegranate is often interpreted as a symbol of fertility, there have been many other interpretations and usages of the pomegranate throughout art history such as mythological, religious, sexual, or simply as a natural object in a still-life study. The pomegranate has been referenced by scholars while discussing its symbolism in individual works of art but not examined over time and different periods of art. In this essay, I interpret each of the above artists’ use of the pomegranate through visual and iconographic analysis of their paintings. After analyzing each work, I discuss how they relate to my own work as an artist who is extending this tradition. In particular, I will describe the significance I see in the pomegranate as shown in my screen print My Beautiful Vessel (Stretch marks or otherwise, 2019). I use the pomegranate’s physical attributes to express a body positive attitude in this work by highlighting both beauty and strength. By demonstrating the similarities and differences between my work and that of historical artists, I am able to provide further context and understanding for the use of pomegranate imagery of the past and present.","PeriodicalId":113813,"journal":{"name":"Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116926728","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We call this process illumination. Gaire et al have designed an algorithm specifically for illumination of problem spaces where the underlying model is computationally expensive. This algorithm, Surrogate Assisted Illumination (SAIL) uses an evolutionary algorithm called MAP-Elites to do illumination. However, SAIL introduces a Gaussian process to simulate the computationally expensive model, and Bayesian optimization for quality control of the Gaussian process. SAIL has demonstrated potential for finding a variety of well performing solutions when applied to the design of aerodynamic hulls for velomobiles. We will walk through each of the components of the SAIL algorithm, and the results of the velomobile experiment.","PeriodicalId":113813,"journal":{"name":"Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal","volume":"10 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129118286","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The reservation algorithms are designed to improve the performance of smart parking systems. The first algorithm considers the distance between parking areas and the number of free parking spaces in determining a parking space. The second algorithm uses distance between parking areas and driver destination, parking price, and the number of unoccupied spaces for each parking area. Neither of these smart parking systems cover how they could fit into a larger scale smart system. As a result, we also look at how interconnection of smart systems is a big priority in the European Union. The researchers there aim to avoid vertical silos of information. Sharing smart system information between different domains can be used to create new or improved services.","PeriodicalId":113813,"journal":{"name":"Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130607322","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
