In this paper, I examine one extreme example of parental rights gone wrong: faith based child medical neglect, a phenomenon that occurs when parents turn to faith healing for their children instead of standard medical care, resulting in the child’s death. First, I show how liberal theory has failed to address key questions regarding the limits of both parental and child rights as they apply to faith healing. Then I apply the republican concepts of civic virtue and non-arbitrary intervention to provide a framework that clearly lays out the limitations on both child and parental rights, as well as determining the specific circumstances under which the government may intervene in cases of faith healing. 2 Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal, Vol. 4, Iss. 1 [2017], Art. 4 https://digitalcommons.morris.umn.edu/horizons/vol4/iss1/4","PeriodicalId":113813,"journal":{"name":"Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-02-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130825190","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We then cover how parallel processing applies to GC. Specically, these concepts are focused within the context of the Java Virtual Machine (JVM). With that foundation, we look at various algorithms that perform compaction of fragmented memory during the GC process. These algorithms are designed to run concurrent to the application running. Such concurrently compacting GC behavior stems from a desire to reduce stop-the-world\" pauses of an application.","PeriodicalId":113813,"journal":{"name":"Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-02-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127932758","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As cells become more closely packed they may leak their charge into adjacent cells, changing their state, and producing memory error. Researchers attempted to intentionally produce memory error by repeatedly accessing cell rows adjacent to each other, a technique which was later labeled rowhammering\". Breakthroughs in research demonstrate working examples of a rowhammer used to exploit memory for unauthorized access. In this paper, I will describe various approaches to rowhammering, discuss potential approaches for protection, and will demonstrate some of the methods described herein.","PeriodicalId":113813,"journal":{"name":"Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal","volume":"348 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-02-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115464228","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents methods for resizing images and videos while attempting to preserve the important content of that image or video. An algorithm called seam carving can expand or reduce the size of an image while typically maintaining quality and content. Seam carving is not always effective however and there have been recent developments and modifications on this algorithm. This paper presents two advancements on seam carving, one that optimizes image retargeting on images with many repeated objects or patterns. The other applies the method of seam carving to video resizing.","PeriodicalId":113813,"journal":{"name":"Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-02-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124126300","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
