Terrorism is escalating in the Sahel region of Africa, forcing massive population displacement and worsening food insecurity. Aim. The objective of the present study was to assess the level of food insecurity within households hosting internally displaced persons (IDP), known as host households, compared to households not hosting internally displaced persons, known as non-host households in the Kora area in Burkina Faso. Methods. A cross-sectional study was conducted in June 2020 at the Kora area and included 70 host households and 73 non-host households. Results. Most of the households had smallholding and were living from subsistence farming. Host households had better quality diets in terms of diet diversification compared to non-host households. In addition, the non-host household were the most vulnerable in terms of food insecurity. Factors associated with household food insecurity were household status (i.e. host or non-host household) and the occupation (i.e. function) of the head of the households. Conclusion. Food assistance received by IDPs improved the quality of food for their host families but did not protect them from food insecurity with all its consequences. Recommendation. The Burkinabe state, in collaboration with the concerned stakeholders should promote good dietary diversity practices, improve food availability and access and monitor host households and provide them with substantial food aid without forget the non-host households which are also exposed.","PeriodicalId":113264,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Life Science and Biomedicine","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125338241","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To provide the essential needs that the body requires, it is necessary to consume a variety of foods. In Burkina Faso, little information is available on the diversity of food consumed by children in major’s urban centers. Aim. The objective of this study was to assess the dietary diversity of children aged from 6 to 23 months and the associated determinants. Methods. The study consisted in the analysis of food data through a cross-sectional survey. Sphinx V5, IBM SPSS Statistics 20.0 and XLSTAT 2016 software were used for data entry and processing. Results. The majority of mothers (50.16%) were between 26 and 35 years old and 95.31% lived with a partner. In total, 41.26% of women had secondary education levels while 44.66% were housewives. Breastfed children largely consumed cereals (95.31%), legumins (83.01%) and fruits (77.67%). Non-breastfed children also consumed mainly cereals (92.86%), legumins (85.71%) and fruits (75%). Minimum dietary diversity was achieved by 100% of non-breastfed children with a Mean Dietary Diversity Score (MDDS) of 5.75 groups versus 81.86% for breastfed children with MDDS of 4.45 food groups. The minimum acceptable diet was reached by 73.73% of breastfed children versus 92.85% for non-breastfed children. The analysis of factors associated with dietary diversity showed a correlation with the mothers’ education levels, the mothers’ occupation, the children’s gender, the number of daily meals and the consumption of some food groups. Conclusion. The food diversity indicators were generally satisfactory.","PeriodicalId":113264,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Life Science and Biomedicine","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128332263","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aimed to assess patients' quality of life of patients after thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR). Methods. The clinical data of 42 patients (mean age of 58.7±4.1 years, 32 men, 10 women) underwent TEVAR from 2016 to 2022 were analyzed. The mean follow-up period was 2.7±0.25 years. The thoracic aortic aneurysm was diagnosed in 11 out of 42 cases. TEVAR was performed in 31 of 42 patients with aortic dissection (24 cases had type B, 4 cases had type \"neither A nor B\", and 3 had type A). Hybrid surgeries were performed in 12 patients, including 3 significant surgeries with prosthetics of the ascending and aortic arch, 3 cases with parallel carotid-subclavian bypass, and 6 of patients with stenting of the common carotid artery and endoprosthesis replacement of the left subclavian artery. Results. The cumulative survival rate at 30 days was 97.6%, 6-month survival was 88.1%, and 3-year survival was 85.7%. The dynamics of assessments by SF-36 domains showed that after TEVAR, vital activity and mental health fields were the most effective. So, if before TEVAR in the binding activity domain, the average quality of life was 63.8±7.2, then after 12 months, the indicator increased with a statistically significant differenceto 86.2±6.4 (P<0.001). The patient's mental health improved significantly with SF-36 scores after TEVAR rate of 77.4±4.4. Also. All other domains enhanced considerably compared to the pre-TEVAR survey results (P<0.01). Conclusion. TEVAR showed high efficiency with significant improvement in the general condition and quality of life of patients.","PeriodicalId":113264,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Life Science and Biomedicine","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128332666","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present study aimed to investigate outcomes of pregnant women with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‑CoV‑2 or COVID-19) in the intensive care unit (ICU). Methods. A total of 3080 pregnant women infected with COVID-19 during treatment were studied in the maternity ward of the Zangiota-1 Republican Specialized Infectious Diseases Hospital from December 2020 to January, 2022. At the time of admission of patients to the hospital, 28.9% of women were in the first trimester of pregnancy, 34.3% and 36.8% were in the second and third trimester of pregnancy, respectively. 1980 cases (64.3%) showed a moderate course of pneumonia and in 48% (1478 cases), bilateral pneumonia was detected. At the same time, 60.0% of patients had lung damage (up to 50%) according to CT dataset. Results. A total of 677 out of 3080 pregnant women with COVID-19 pneumonia (22.0%) needed treatment at the ICU. 490 cases out of 677 patients showed severe clinical course of COVID-19, while 277 cases (41%) showed multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). Of 277 MODS cases, 209 (75.4%) were those in the third trimester of pregnancy and 170 (61.4%) had initially severe clinical picture of COVID-19. Mortality rate in ICU was 9.4% (64 cases out of 677) while 56.6% experienced post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) at baseline, 26.7% had general anxiety disorders, and 16.7% (113 of 677) of women experienced depression symptoms. In the postpartum period, 46.1% (312 of 677) cases showed combinations of PTSD, anxiety and depression according to the combined Patient Health Questionnaire Anxiety and Depression Scale (PHQ-ADS) assessment, which was typical for women with severe and extremely severe COVID-19, preterm birth, miscarriages and perinatal mortality. Conclusion. The ICU hospitalization rate for COVID-19 pneumonia in pregnant women was 22.0%, among which the vast majority (72.4%) were cases with severe clinical course of COVID-19 and PTSD (56.6%). Women in the third trimester of pregnancy were most susceptible to developing MODS and severe COVID-19 pneumonia. Recommendation. In promoting pregnant women's mental and physical health, understanding the characteristics of psycho-emotional stress disorders during the COVID-19 pandemic and learning how to deal with them is critical.","PeriodicalId":113264,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Life Science and Biomedicine","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121261550","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Postbiotics refer to soluble factors (products or metabolic byproducts), secreted by live bacteria, or released after bacterial lysis, such as enzymes, peptides, teichoic acids, peptidoglycan-derived muropeptides, polysaccharides, cell surface proteins, and organic acids. These postbiotics have drawn attention because of their clear chemical structure, long shelf life, safety dose parameters, and the content of various signaling molecules which may have anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, anti-obesogenic, antihypertensive, hypo-cholesterolemic, anti-proliferative, and antioxidant activities. These properties suggest that postbiotics may contribute, to the improvement of host health by improving specific physiological functions, even though the exact mechanisms have not been entirely elucidated. It has been recognized that several mechanisms mediating the health benefits of beneficial bacterial cells do require viability. However, new terms such as para-probiotic or postbiotic have emerged to denote that non-viable microbial cells, microbial fractions, or cell lysates might also offer physiological benefits to the host by providing additional bioactivity. Aim. This review provides an overview of the postbiotic concept, evidence of their health benefits, and possible signaling pathways involved in their protective effects, as well as perspectives for applications in foods and pharmaceuticals. ","PeriodicalId":113264,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Life Science and Biomedicine","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129967890","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Low birth weight (LBW) is a major public health problem, in both developed and developing countries, due to its magnitude and strong association with infant morbidity and mortality. Aim. To estimate the prevalence of low birth weight and identify associated factors in children under five years old. Methods. This is a cross-sectional study carried out in 8 villages in the commune of Pissila in north-central Burkina Faso, involving 262 mother-child pairs. The factors associated with low birth weight were identified according to the odds ratio (OR) raw and the 95% confidence interval (95% CI) in the bivariate analysis and according to the adjusted OR in the multivariate analysis. Sociodemographic characteristics, reproductive history, previous morbidity and factors related to prenatal care were studied. Results. A total of 262 children with birth weights based on official documents were involved in this study. The proportion of low birth weight children was estimated at 10.7%. For maternal factors, we observed that the low level of education (adjusted OR=2.6), the fact of carrying out an itinerant activity (adjusted OR=3.4) and rural socialization (adjusted OR=0.3) were significantly associated with low birth weight. Additionally, maternal parity (adjusted OR=5.5) and large household size (adjusted OR=15.0) were also associated with low birth weight. Conclusion. In Burkina Faso, chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major public health problem due to its increasing prevalence, severity and the high cost of treatment. Aim. The aim of this study was to describe nutritional status of subjects diagnosed with severe and moderate stages of chronic renal insufficiency, followed in nephrology consultation at the Yalgado Ouedraogo University Hospital Center (YO-UHC) of Ouagadougou. Methods. A descriptive cross-sectional study conducted over a period of eight months and included 75 patients in total. The social-demographic parameters were determined on the basis of the patients' declaration and the use of their medical records. Biological parameters were collected from the results of laboratory examinations performed by each patient. The nutritional status of the patients was assessed by the anthropometric method. Finally, all patients were asked about their dietary habits and lifestyle using the 24-hour recall method. Results. Our results revealed a male predominance, out of the total number of patients included. The percentage of men and women was 54.70% and 45.30% respectively with a sex (male/female) ratio of 1.20. The average of Body Mass Index was 24.79 Kg/m2. The percentage of overweight and obesity of women was 64.71% compared to 26.83% for men. The proportion of women with severe chronic kidney disease (58.82%) was twice as high as that of men (29.27%), (P<0.05). The average waist circumference of the subjects aged 30-39 years was significantly lower than that of the subjects aged 60-85 years. So, average hip circumference was 93.77 cm, with a significant difference according to sex (P<0.05). The prevalence of hyperglycaemia and diabetes increased with age. Hyperglycaemia in the 40-49 age group was increased significantly from 16.67% to 26.67% in the 70-85 age group (P<0.05). Diabetes in the 50-59 age group was 10% and doubled in the 70-85 age group (P<0.05). A percentage of 67.99% of the patients had a history of hypertension in either first-degree relatives or collaterals. The highest proportion was found in the hypertensive collaterals (37.33%; P=0.059). This study revealed a low level of physical activity among all patients. Only 38.67% of the patients practiced regular physical activity. There was no significant association between the level of physical activity and the stage of renal failure. Conclusion. Knowledge of nutritional status is a crucial part of better nutritional management of CKD patients. Finally, previous studies on the dietary habits of patients suffering from CKD will allow a better understanding of their nutritional status for a better management according to the stage of progression of the disease. \u0000","PeriodicalId":113264,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Life Science and Biomedicine","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114621530","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
